With the first album, I was so obsessed with getting the right sound straightaway, which hindered the flow of ideas," förklarar hon. "This time around, I let go of my perfection in the initial moment for the ideas to fully flourish and become what they want to be." Owens walesiska rötter är tydligt närvarande då ikonen och före detta Velvet Underground-medlemmen John Cale bidrar med sin karaktäristiska röst på låten Corner of My Sky, där han även sjunger en vers på kymriska. "The power of conceptualizing who you are has really informed this album," säger Owens om Inner Song. Artist: Kelly Lee Owens Title: Corner Of My Sky (ft. John Cale) Album: Inner Song Label: Smalltown Supersound Release: 4th August / 28th August (LP) Format: Digital / + vinyl on album Kelly Lee Owens collaborates with John Cale on a foreboding new single, “Corner Of My Sky” (feat. John Cale), from her forthcoming album Inner Song, out August 28th on Smalltown Supersound. The two Welsh artists first met in London while working on a song for Cale, which prompted a future collaboration for Inner Song. In “Corner Of My Sky,” Cale sings in both English and Welsh over Owens’ droning, psychedelic lullaby. The track follows a string of previously released singles and videos - “On,” “Night,” and “Melt!” Cale comments, “It's not usually this immediate that a productive afternoon brings a satisfying conclusion to a task. Kelly sent me a track she'd written - an instrumental that was a gentle drift - something comfortably familiar to what I'd been working on myself. On the first listen, the lyrics came with ease and a chorus and melody grew out of it. Even the Welsh phrases seemed to develop from a place of reflective memory which was a surprise since I hadn't written in Welsh for decades. Once finished, I realized there existed a built-in thread we'd created together and apart - and her kind spirit pulled it all together and in quick order.” Owens elaborates, “I knew with this album I needed to connect with my roots and therefore having the Welsh language featured on the record felt very important to me.

artist: Kelly Lee Owens title: Inner Song date: 1 May 2020 label: Smalltown Supersound format: vinyl | digital preorder: https://kellyleeowens.lnk.to/innersong Watch Kelly Lee Owens Melt! Kelly Lee Owens' masterful second album Inner Song finds the convention-blurring techno producer and singer/songwriter diving deep into her own psyche—excoriating the struggles she's faced over the last several years and exploring personal pain while embracing the beauty of the natural world. It's a leap in artistry from a musician who burst onto the scene with a confident, rich sound, and is endlessly enticing when it comes to what Owens is capable of. Inner Song follows the star-making debut of Owens’ 2017 self-titled album, a quixotic blend of body-moving beats and introspective songwriting that garnered numerous critical accolades. Owens has certainly come a long way from her background as a nurse; since then, she's released an indelibly clubby two-tracker, 2019's "Let It Go" b/w "Omen," and teamed up with like-minded auteur Jon Hopkins on the one-off "Luminous Spaces." Her latest album comes off of what Owens describes as "the hardest three years of my life," an emotionally fraught time that, in her words, “impacted my creative life and everything I'd worked for up to that point. I wasn't sure if I could make anything anymore, and it took quite a lot of courage to get to a point where I could make something again." Inner Song was largely written and recorded over a month last winter.

Following “Night” and “Melt!,” “On” is a rustling electro-pop glimmer that gives way to yo-yo synths and a tough-as-nails techno backbeat. It’s the alpha and omega of the Kelly Lee Owens experience, reflective of her ability to contain sonic and emotional multitudes within just one song. Shot on the Norwegian coastline, its accompanying video sees Kelly collaborating once again with Kasper Häggström, who also directed her “Throwing Lines” video. Like the song, it tells the story of a breakup. “This is perhaps the most intimate and personal song I've written so far - the two halves of the track reflect upon sad acceptances of the truth and then the joyous aftermath of liberation that can come from that,” says Owens. “This can definitely be heard in the production and arrangement of the track - the first half sonically connecting to the inner revelations and the second half, the liberation in action, the forward motion.” Watch Kelly Lee Owens’ “On” Video Inner Song is the follow-up to Owens’ self-titled debut, which “introduced an extraordinary artist packing a hefty one-two combination of intimate, powerful electronic pop and cavernous, brain-melting techno” (MOJO), and was recognized as one of the most critically praised albums of 2017.

MUSIC. MORE THAN EVER. ASCAP MEMBER ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2020 ASCAP MUSIC WAS A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS IN 2020. In a year marked by division, uncertainty and isolation, the global ASCAP family lifted our spirits and kept us connected when we couldn’t be with each other in person. ASCAP members met this challenging year head on. They wrote extraordinary music that spoke to the difficult times we live in. They inspired change and reflection, and united fans from disparate backgrounds. They broke records and barriers. Here’s a look back at some of ASCAP members’ remarkable achievements from 2020 – just a few of the countless reasons we had to be proud of the 800,000 songwriters, composers and publishers we represent. TOP BRASS When global pop star Dua Lipa released her highly-anticipated sophomore album Future Nostalgia on March 27 of 2020, the world was in the process of plunging into the new reality of COVID-19. Pre-lockdown, the London native had already locked in GRAMMYs, Brit Awards, the ASCAP Vanguard Award and an ocean of critical praise. But Future Nostalgia rocketed her into the stratosphere, by giving the world exactly what we needed in 2020. The album struck a chord with millions of housebound fans looking to dance their anxieties away from the safety of their homes – especially the infectious disco hit “Don’t Start Now,” her highest-charting song in the US so far. And despite the cancellation of a massive tour, Dua even managed to bring a live experience to her fans through her four- night livestream Studio 2054, a stunning tribute to New York’s iconic club Studio 54 featuring superstar guests including Bad Bunny, Elton John, FKA Twigs, J Balvin and Kylie Minogue.

Song Exploder Kelly Lee Owens - On Episode 192 Hrishikesh: You’re listening to Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and piece by piece tell the story of how they were made. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. (“On” by KELLY LEE OWENS) Hrishikesh: Kelly Lee Owens is an electronic music producer and songwriter originally from Wales. She’s released two critically acclaimed albums and done remixes for Björk and St. Vincent. Her most recent album is called Inner Song. It came out in August 2020, following what Kelly described as the three hardest years of her life. In this episode, she takes apart her song “On” and she explains how the song’s tone and tempo shifts mirrored her own journey processing her own trauma. (“On” by KELLY LEE OWENS) Kelly: My name is Kelly Lee Owens. (Music fades out) Kelly: The last two or three years before making this album I had been through quite a lot personally. And I would say, you know, suffered a lot of losses which involved a lot of grief. The day I made this song was the day that Keith Flint from The Prodigy passed away and The Prodigy I've loved my whole life, and I think actually it technically counts as having been my first CD single. Yeah, I've loved them for most of my life so when I heard that he passed, it really affected me, and this song in a sense was born of that energy initially. But even though this song was inspired by the passing of Keith Flint, you know, which is a very emotional thing, I often start songs with inspirations from samples that I take.

February 25, 2020 For Immediate Release Kelly Lee Owens Announces New Album, Inner Song, Out May 1st on Smalltown Supersound Watch Visual for Lead Single “Melt!” Inner Song Cover Artwork by Kim Hiorthøy Convention-blurring techno producer/musician Kelly Lee Owens will release her second album, Inner Song, on May 1st via Smalltown Supersound. Alongside the announcement, she presents its lead single/visual, “Melt!” Inner Song finds Owens diving deep into her own psyche—working through the struggles she's faced over the last several years and exploring personal pain while embracing the beauty of the natural world. It's a leap in artistry from a musician who burst forth on the scene with a confident, rich sound, and is steadily enticing. Inner Song follows the 2017 release of her much lauded self-titled debut, as well as remixes of St. Vincent and by Björk, last year’s “Let It Go / Omen” 12”, and her recent collaboration with Jon Hopkins. The hair-raising bass and tickling textures of Inner Song drive home that, more so than ever, Owens is locked in to delivering maximal aural pleasure and is adept at containing musical and emotional multitudes within just one song. The album features an unconventional Radiohead cover, the voice of fellow Welsh artist John Cale over a psychedelic lullaby, an electro-pop number that glimmers with yo-yo synths and a tough as nails backbeat, and techno banger “Melt!” Although sonically distinct from the rest of Inner Song, “Melt!” is an essential piece of the album. Throughout, Owens comments on the ever-pressing issue of climate change, right down to its structural composition, which includes samples of melting glacial ice and people skating on thin ice.
