Kelly Lee Owens Unveils New Single/Video, “On” Inner Song June 24, 2020 For Immediate Release Kelly Lee Owens Unveils New Single/Video, “On” Inner Song Out August 28th via Smalltown Supersound Photo Credit: Kim Hiorthøy Techno producer/musician Kelly Lee Owens unveils a new single/video, “On,” from her forthcoming album, Inner Song, out August 28th on Smalltown Supersound. Following “Night” and “Melt!,” “On” is a rustling electro-pop glimmer that gives way to yo-yo synths and a tough-as-nails techno backbeat. It’s the alpha and omega of the Kelly Lee Owens experience, reflective of her ability to contain sonic and emotional multitudes within just one song. Shot on the Norwegian coastline, its accompanying video sees Kelly collaborating once again with Kasper Häggström, who also directed her “Throwing Lines” video. Like the song, it tells the story of a breakup. “This is perhaps the most intimate and personal song I've written so far - the two halves of the track reflect upon sad acceptances of the truth and then the joyous aftermath of liberation that can come from that,” says Owens. “This can definitely be heard in the production and arrangement of the track - the first half sonically connecting to the inner revelations and the second half, the liberation in action, the forward motion.” Watch Kelly Lee Owens’ “On” Video Inner Song is the follow-up to Owens’ self-titled debut, which “introduced an extraordinary artist packing a hefty one-two combination of intimate, powerful electronic pop and cavernous, brain-melting techno” (MOJO), and was recognized as one of the most critically praised albums of 2017. It finds Owens diving deep into her own psyche—working through the struggles she's faced over the last several years and exploring personal pain while embracing the beauty of the natural world. Sonically, Inner Song’s hair-raising bass and tickling textures drive home that, more so than ever, Owens is locked into delivering maximal aural pleasure, whether it be on a techno banger, covering Radiohead, or collaborating with fellow Welsh artist John Cale on a psychedelic lullaby. Listen to “Night” by Kelly Lee Owens Watch Kelly Lee Owens’ Visuals for “Melt!” Download hi-res jpegs and images of Kelly Lee Owens Pre-order Inner Song Inner Song Cover Artwork by Kim Hiorthøy Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Soundcloud | Hi-res press images For more information, contact: Jessica Linker | Pitch Perfect PR – [email protected], 773-942-6954 .

In 1971 Johnny Thunders formed the New York Dolls, a band of transvestites, and John Cale (of the Velvet Underground's fame) recorded Jonathan Richman's Modern Lovers, while Alice Cooper went on stage with his "horror shock" show. In London, Malcom McLaren opened a boutique that became a center for the non-conformist youth. The following year, 1972, was the year of David Bowie's glam-rock, but, more importantly, Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell formed the Neon Boys, while Big Star coined power-pop. Finally, unbeknownst to the masses, in august 1974 a new band debuted at the CBGB's in New York: the Ramones. The future was brewing, no matter how flat and bland the present looked. Album Review of The Velvet Underground & Nico – Artifacts Journal - University of Mi... Page 1 of 4 University of Missouri A Journal of Undergraduate Writing Album Review of The Velvet Underground & Nico Sam Jennings Sam Jennings started attending the University of Missouri in 2012 and is currently pursuing a bachelor of music performance in guitar. He writes in his spare time and fronts a local Columbia rock band, “The Rollups”. He is thankful to Dr. Michael J. Budds for encouraging him and his submission to this journal. He wrote this paper as one part of a multi-paper project in Historical Studies in Jazz and Popular Music, taught by Dr. Michael J. Budds. They were expected to choose a musician (before 1970) and review a full-length LP by that artist; he felt particularly inclined to make the case for a set of truly bizarre, radical artists who have been historically misunderstood and misaligned. When The Velvet Underground & Nico was released in March of 1967, it was to a public that hardly cared and a critical establishment that could not make heads or tails of it. Its sales were dismal, due in part to legal troubles, and MGM’s bungled attempts at promoting the record. The Velvet Underground’s seedy, druggy music defiantly reflected an urban attitude even closer to the beatniks than Bob Dylan and even more devoted to rock n’ roll primitivism than The Rolling Stones or The Who. Nevertheless, the recording had no place in a landscape soon to be dominated by San Francisco psychedelics and high- concept British pop.

  • In the Place of the Past: John Cale's Dark Days – Dyddiau Du
In the Place of the Past: John Cale’s Dark Days – Dyddiau Du Jeff Malpas You’re working in the dark, or I am anyway… – John Cale It begins with water. The slow drip from a hose into a bath that will later appear in the final movement of the work as that in which Cale himself is immersed, gasping for breath, his struggle for air, amidst repeated immersions, interrupted by noisy bursts of broken transmission. Water and memory are bound together – if not in any simple logic of physical connection, then in the deeper logic of the unconscious, the logic of symbol, of metaphor, of magic and of mystery. In Hades, it is two rivers, Lethe and Mnemosyne, whose waters have the power to wipe away one’s memories or to restore and sustain them, and it is also water that, in many mythologies, including that of Celtic Wales, marks off the realm of the dead from that of the living. If memory is tied to water, then it is also water that marks the boundary between realms – not only the living and the dead, but the present and the past, the known and the unknown, the mundane and the magical. Dark Days begins with water, not only as an ominous allusion to the torturous scene with which the work ends, but perhaps also as a mark of the entry into the work as an entry into a strange and different realm – even though it is also a realm rooted in the everyday, the ordinary, the present. Yet although it may indeed be said to involve a movement ‘between’ realms, the movement that occurs here is not a movement that takes us away from the embodied materiality of the world around us, but instead returns us to that world.

Artist: Kelly Lee Owens Title: Corner Of My Sky (ft. John Cale) Album: Inner Song Label: Smalltown Supersound Release: 4th August / 28th August (LP) Format: Digital / + vinyl on album Kelly Lee Owens collaborates with John Cale on a foreboding new single, “Corner Of My Sky” (feat. John Cale), from her forthcoming album Inner Song, out August 28th on Smalltown Supersound. The two Welsh artists first met in London while working on a song for Cale, which prompted a future collaboration for Inner Song. In “Corner Of My Sky,” Cale sings in both English and Welsh over Owens’ droning, psychedelic lullaby. The track follows a string of previously released singles and videos - “On,” “Night,” and “Melt!” Cale comments, “It's not usually this immediate that a productive afternoon brings a satisfying conclusion to a task. Kelly sent me a track she'd written - an instrumental that was a gentle drift - something comfortably familiar to what I'd been working on myself. On the first listen, the lyrics came with ease and a chorus and melody grew out of it. Even the Welsh phrases seemed to develop from a place of reflective memory which was a surprise since I hadn't written in Welsh for decades. Once finished, I realized there existed a built-in thread we'd created together and apart - and her kind spirit pulled it all together and in quick order.” Owens elaborates, “I knew with this album I needed to connect with my roots and therefore having the Welsh language featured on the record felt very important to me.

  • John Cale Is Coming to Basel: Vis-À-Vis with Rock Music Legends Thanks to the Partnership Between the Fondation Beyeler and Bayer
Media release, 31st August 2016 John Cale is coming to Basel: Vis-à-vis with rock music legends thanks to the partnership between the Fondation Beyeler and Bayer John Cale, charismatic founding member of the unforgettable avant-garde band The Velvet Underground that was associated with Andy Warhol, extraordinary solo musician and music producer, is performing an exclusive concert with his trio at the Fondation Beyeler on October 22 at 6pm. Exceptional art experiences are a tradition at the Fondation Beyeler. Why does fine art exert such a powerful fascination? Why are museums so popular? Doubtless because they permit a direct personal relationship to art, face to face and with no filter. When we visit a museum, we totally possess the artworks we see for a few moments in time; we immerse ourselves in them and they arouse emotions and questions in us, generating lively dialogs spanning different centuries and cultures. The close, intimate, sometimes demanding and always exciting experiencing of art in a museum has inspired the Fondation Beyeler and Bayer to hold a lose series of concerts in which a legendary musician can be experienced close up, just as artworks are. Last year Patti Smith and her band performed an acoustic set at the Fondation Beyeler and this year it is the turn of the rock legend John Cale. After studying at Goldsmiths College in London, the unconventional, headstrong Welshman was awarded a Leonard Bernstein scholarship thanks to the intervention of Aaron Copland, the contemporary US composer, and worked with major figures on the American avant-garde scene such as La Monte Young and John Cage.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Joshua Machat 212.387.3410 / [email protected] THE VELVET UNDERGROUND NEW YORK ART Edited by Johan Kugelberg Introduction by Lou Reed and Maureen Tucker Preface by Vaclav Havel with text contributions by Doug Yule, Sterling Morrison, John Wilcock, and Jon Savage Timeline by Salvatore Mercuri THE VELVET UNDERGROUND: NEW YORK ART (November 2009) is the first monograph devoted to a Rock and Roll band. The Velvet Underground were among the New York avant-garde who closed the gap between the popular arts and the fine art movement of the 20th century. With Andy Warhol at the helm, the band contextualized the hi-art/low-art medium of the dysphoric Sixties with a unique mixture of sound experimentation, performance art, and pop sensibility. With an astonishing assembly of rare objects and artworks and the first book of its scale to document the formative years of the band, The Velvet Underground: New York Art, is not only a testament to one of the greatest New York City bands, but also a visual document of how music can influence the history of fine art and vice versa. From never-before-seen photographs of the band’s first live show in New York to Andy Warhol’s cover and poster designs, Lou Reed’s and John Cale’s handwritten music and lyrics, underground press clippings and controversial reviews, flyers, handbills, and posters, the materials comprise a uniquely comprehensive survey of the first rock group ever to transcend the genre and embrace underground popular culture.
