Bark papery. Leaves Leaf blades pendulous, about 7-12 x 0.6-1.5 cm, margins thickened somewhat vein-like, petioles Leaves and Flowers. © B. Gray about 0.3-1 cm long. Oil dots quite numerous, not enclosed in reticulations. Venation longitudinal and parallel with about 3-5 veins more prominent than the rest. Younger leaf blades densely clothed in fine prostrate silvery hairs. Leaves aromatic when crushed. Flowers Spikes about 7-8 mm long. Individual flowers about 10-15 mm diam. Calyx lobes about 0.7-1.1 mm long, apex obtuse. Petals about 2.3-3.7 x 1.6-3 mm with about 6 or 7 slightly elongated oil dots. Stamens about 25-35, united in five bundles. Filaments about 8-20 mm long. Anthers about 0.6-0.9 mm long with a gland on the back. Style about 12-22 mm long. Base of the style surrounded by a nectar-producing disk. Cuda2 Introduction Distribution The introduced tree Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) B. melaleucae has been collected from all states in its S.T. A flora and vegetation survey was conducted over the application area by Biota Environmental Services during July 2018. These functions are supported by existing services and infrastructure. All this occurs within a landscape framework. It is recognised that the landscape development of the site is a significant factor in establishing a distinct character that reflects the overall development philosophy and objectives as described in the Masterplan. The landscape masterplan prepared by Greening Australia in 2005 established a landscape approach ‘that incorporates and builds on the strengths of the Rapid Creek catchment’s unique plant communities that include riparian monsoon forest, eucalypt woodland, melaleuca swamps and wetlands”. The resultant landscape deliberately introduces international and national visitors to the beauty and diversity of the Top End environment and associated flora. In order to provide clear direction to future works within the precinct, it has been recognised that a ‘kit of part’ comprising distinct landscape treatments is required. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. Dance, Pastoral Division, Alice Springs BACKGROUND About 600,000 camels (Camelus dromedarius) are believed to inhabit the arid centre of Australia, mainly in South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Most of these camels are feral. A small camel industry has developed, which harvests selected animals for domestic and export markets, primarily for meat. Camels can eat more than 80% of the common plant species found in Central Australia. Some plant species are actively sought by camels and may need to be protected. METHOD Observations of grazing preferences by camels were made periodically for up to 12 years on five cattle stations in Central Australia. Where camels were accustomed to the presence of humans, it was possible to observe their grazing preferences from a few metres. Radio transmitters were fitted on some camels for easy detection and observation at any time. These evaluations were used to establish a diet preference or palatability index for observed food plants. Table 1. Environmental Water Management in the Fitzroy River Valley Information availability, knowledge gaps and research needs Bradley J. Pusey The University of Western Australia & Jarrod Kath Western Australian Department of Water i Executive Summary The Fitzroy River is the largest river in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and contains significant biological, conservation and geoheritage values. Socio/cultural values, especially Indigenous values, are significant also but are not considered here. Current land use is dominated by rangeland grazing and very limited irrigated agriculture. The water resources of the basin are significant and potentially available for expanded agricultural development but the impact on the environment of increased water use, especially of groundwater is largely unknown. The current report addresses the availability of information that could be used to guide the formation and implementation of management strategies aimed at maintaining existing values. Currently available information useful in this regard is highly limited. Moreover, available information was found to be rarely in a form (i.e. quantitative relationships between flow and environmental factors) that would enable a full assessment of the impacts of different water resource use scenarios to be undertaken. Similarly, there is limited information that could provide the basis for ongoing assessment (i.e. monitoring) of the efficacy of any imposed water management strategies. Significant knowledge gaps were identified relating to five major themes: 1. The nature of aquatic habitats in the basin and their relationship to the flow regime and groundwater and including identity, extent and distribution, connectivity and conservation value; 2. Hoang Received: 5 January 2012 /Accepted: 14 May 2012 /Published online: 31 May 2012 # Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2012 Abstract The genus Melaleuca consists of around 260 species covering over eight million hectares (including native and introduced species) and distributed mostly in Australia, but also occurring in South-East Asia, the Southern United States and the Caribbean. Melaleuca populations predominantly occur in wetland or/and coastal ecosystems where they have been significantly affected by climate change. This paper assesses the potential responses of the Melaleuca genus to climate change, based on the synthesis of worldwide published data. The main findings include: (i) that the Melaleuca genus has a rich species diversity, and significant phenotypic diversity in a variety of ecosystems; (ii) they demonstrate significant local adapta- tion to harsh conditions; and (iii) the fossil records and taxon biology indicate the evolution of the Melaleuca genus began around 38 million years ago and they have survived several significant climatic alterations, particularly a shift towards cooler and drier climates that has occurred over this period. These findings show that the Melaleuca genus is highly resilient and adaptable and based on this, this paper argues that Melaleuca can adapt to climate change through Wright’s ‘migrational adaptation’, and can be managed to achieve sustainable benefits.
