Widegates sits within a pretty part of South East Cornwall amongst the rolling Cornish countryside, close to the coast. There is a good farm shop and useful village shop, catering for most day to day needs whilst the nearby village of Hessenford has a church and popular public house. The popular coastal villages of Seaton and Downderry with all of their facilities are also nearby. The area represents a fine life style investment, the closest town is Looe, which remains important today as a commercial fishing facility, a thriving tourist industry A wonderful family home set in 18 acres in the rural yet not and is popular with boating enthusiasts. On the edge of the town is a branch line railway station with the main line at Liskeard (Plymouth to London Paddington 3 isolated position with stunning views, subject to an AOC. hours). The coastline either side of Looe is beautiful and unspoilt, easily accessible via the South West Coast Path and there are substantial areas of ownership held by the National Trust. There are excellent bathing beaches and a number of footpaths with bridleways in the vicinity. Access to the area is good with main roads leading to the A38, west of Plymouth. The market town of Liskeard, to the north includes a wide range facilities, as does the town of Saltash with a Waitrose store on its northern outskirts. The City of Plymouth lies within commuting distance and has an extensive and historic waterfront together with an excellent range of shopping, educational and recreational facilities. In addition there is a cross channel ferry link at Plymouth with regular services to France and Northern Spain. DESCRIPTION This is a fascinating and highly unusual house constructed is a dormer bungalow with extensive accommodation spread over two levels and standing in grounds amounting to 18 acres. The property is subject to an Agricultural Occupancy Condition. The detached house was built in 1989. It adjoins open countryside, and enjoys far reaching north westerly views across unspoilt rolling countryside of South East Cornwall. Higher Widlake Farm offers extensive accommodation extending to around 1972 square feet over two levels with a further 1792 square feet of outbuildings, stables and garaging. Today it is presented in good order yet offers much potential to improve. ACCOMMODATION Approached from a gravel driveway with plenty of space for turning and parking, including under cover in an open car port, the sheltered front door opens to a welcoming hallway turning left is an impressive sitting room running the entire width of the house, bathed in natural light from its triple aspect and also allowing enjoyment of the far reaching views. A warming woodburing stove ensures this large room remains cosy. Passing the study or potential occasional bedroom is the notable kitchen breakfast room, more than large enough to swallow a good size kitchen table, this really is the heart of the home, with a cloakroom/wc and utility room off. Upstairs there are four proper bedrooms, sharing two bathrooms. GARDENS AND GROUNDS The grounds are impressive, available with both 8 or 18 acres (see plan) they are currently largely pasture and securely divided into three distinct paddocks. Any willing volunteers, please email [email protected] for more info. As usual please send any copy to [email protected] or post to ‘Tremaye’ Downderry by the 17th of the preceding month. Any enquiries, email or ring 250629. Nature Among our birds there is a fascinating overlap between summer and winter visitors at this time of year. One day in mid October I saw a few Swallows flying over the village on their way to Africa. The following day I noticed a Black Redstart, a winter visitor to our coast. I now look forward to the possibility of a Blackcap or a tiny Firecrest in the garden or wintering thrushes in hedgerows. The Blackcaps that stay for winter are not the same birds that breed in our woodlands. The latter have moved south whereas the newcomers are a separate population that will have bred further east on the continent. A series of mild winters has enabled the Blackcaps to survive here instead of flying south and they have passed on the habit to later generations. They will stay until March when they begin to sing and become aggressive towards other birds at feeders. This takes me on to a sad situation that I noticed in September. Trichomonosis is a deadly disease that affects the digestive system of some birds and I saw the symptoms among Goldfinches. They become lethargic, cannot feed successfully and soon starve.
