Page 22 Page 3 What does the Spirit say to the churches?

What does the Spirit say to the churches? When the Army comes to town (Glory! 1976) sets our feet tapping as the citizens of Folkestone What does the Spirit say to you? look forward to welcoming the Army to their town. If you have ears then hear from the Spirit, Do what the Spirit tells you to! Two songs then follow that speak of WONDER - the amazing wonder of God’s love for us. You can’t stop God from loving you (Hosea 1969) highlights the eternal truth the prophet proclaimed – You love me less than , that however bad we humans might be, nothing will stop God from loving us. Hundreds and I know your strengths and your weakness too; thousands (Take-over Bid 1967), tells of the wonder that ‘God knows everyone and God knows Love me again as you used to love me, me!’ This is the children’s song from that musical. Since its writing it has been sung by hundreds and Do once again as you used to do. thousands of school children because the song has been included in school hymnals.

You have a wonderful reputation, The next theme is CARING. In Could you care? (White Rose 1977), Clare, a Parisian young mother Far and away how your fame has spread! sunk in despair, approaches an Army girl who looks to her like an angel. Clare is seeking for someone True, you are always so very busy, who will care for her, and the ‘angel’ Salvationist promises that she will. There’s someone who No-one would guess that in fact you’re dead! knows (The Meeting 1990) continues in the same vein, with the verses asking whether there is someone who cares, and the refrain bringing the reassuring answer that there is: ‘That someone is You are so proud and suppose you’re clever, Jesus – he cares’. I know you’re neither cold nor hot! Luke warm! That’s you and it makes you useless, The programme continues with two songs from Take-over Bid that take TRANSFORMATION as their You think you’re rich but you’re not! You’re not! theme. In the enduring favourite A dif-ferent man Harry tells how his life has been totally changed ‘since I let the love of the Lord inside of me’. In Wonders begin when the Lord comes in, You are afraid of the Spirit’s leading, here rendered as a trombone instrumental, the very essence of the good news of transformation is I set before you an open door, stated in just the opening line alone. No man can shut what the Spirit opens, What in the world are you waiting for? Focusing on the theme of FOLLOWING, the song Follow me (Jesus Folk 1973) captures the effervescent joy of the disciples as they set out to follow Jesus. I’ll make my promises (The What does the Spirit say? Blood of the Lamb 1978) takes us deep into a Russian forest where a young convert is secretly being What does the Spirit of God say to you? enrolled as a Salvation Army soldier.

Page 4 Page 21 Love cannot fail

WITNESSING is the next theme, and in another song from Hosea, Down the street, light fingered If I can understand the hidden mysteries of life, Unless I gave the love of God, Freddy gives his testimony. But it is not only Freddy who witnesses, for the band does as well. It If I could know the secrets all men seek, The all embracing love of God, witnesses when ‘down the street comes the band of The Salvation Army with trumpets, tabrettes and If I could know the reason why the world is what it is, Unless I gave the love of God, trombones!’ Why every human being is unique... I would give nothing, I would give nothing. The next couple of songs are grouped under the theme of YEARNING. In I dream of a day from Unless I knew the love of God, Love is patient, love is always kind, Take-over Bid, John and Julie sing wistfully of the world they long to see. The number that follows, If The all embracing love of God, Love is never jealous or rude, you knew (Son of Man 1983) speaks of the yearnings of Jesus himself. He weeps over the city of Unless I knew the love of God Never selfish, slow to take offence, Jerusalem and, based on the New English Bible translation of Luke 19:41-44, sings words that apply I would know nothing I would know nothing! Never cruel or crude. those yearnings to our own hearts. ‘If you only knew…’ he exclaims, ‘but you did not recognise God’s moment when it came.’ If I could hold the wealth of all the world within my hands, Love can take no pleasure in other men’s sins, Possess the priceless treasures of the earth, Love always delights in the truth, Two cheerful numbers focus on the theme of SERVING. Cleanliness is next to godliness from If all the precious things that men have prized belonged to me, Love believes all things, love endures all things, Glory! tells of early-day community service as the Army lasses in Folkestone clean the house of Mrs And lovely things of unimagined worth... Through trouble and travail, Fishbob. Army cup of tea, the fourth song from Take-over Bid on the CD, honours a simple form of All else may fall or fade, ministry for which the Army has become famous. Unless I had the love of God, Love cannot fail! The all embracing love of God, Grouped under the heading of REFLECTING is first of all There is a time for tears. This song from Unless I had the love of God, Glory! – here arranged as an instrumental item – takes us to the funeral scene in that musical. Then I would have nothing, I would have nothing. follows the deeply reflective I’ll not turn back (Man Mark II 1985), a song that John and I, from the moment we wrote it, felt would have a special power. If I should spend my strength to build a better world than this, And spoke of brotherhood with every breath, The final two items are based on the theme of SPIRIT and are drawn from the musical of that name. If I should give my goods to feed the children of the poor, Love cannot fail (Spirit! 1974), inspired by Paul’s famous Love chapter in 1 Corinthians 13, has with And for my faith would die a martyr’s death... the passage of time become something of a classic. The upbeat What does the Spirit say to the churches? – which echoes the letters to the churches in Revelation – ends the programme with the pungent declaration to everyone with ears to hear: ‘Do what the Spirit tells you to!’

Page 20 Page 5 I’ll not turn back When the Army comes to town

If crosses come, If doors should close, If it should cost me dearly Then other doors will open, to be the servant of my servant Lord: The word of God can never be contained, If darkness falls around the path of duty, His love cannot be finally frustrated And men despise the Saviour I’ve adored; by narrow minds or prison bars restrained

I’ll not turn back, Whatever it may cost I’m called to live to love and save the lost,

There’ll be marching, marching, marching, There’ll be marching, marching, marching, When the Army comes to town. When the Army comes to town. There’ll be banners, there’ll be bonnets, there’ll be drums, And they’re going to turn the world upside down, And they’ll dig out all the sinners from the slums, When The Salvation Army comes to town. There’ll be , singing, singing, When the Army comes to town. And they’re going to turn the world upside down, When The Salvation Army comes to town.

There’ll be preaching, there’ll be prancing, They’ll get on their knees and pray, There’ll be music, there’ll be dancing, And the tambourines will play, You just watch, you’ll find the drunks will give up drinking, And of course we’ll give up swearing right away, We may even have to change our way of thinking, When the Army gets here to stay!

Page 6 Page 19 You can’t stop God from loving you There is a time for tears

You can’t stop rain from falling down, There is a time for tears, a time for sighing, (sighing, sighing, sighing); Prevent the sun from shining, There is a place for grief, a place for crying, (crying, crying, crying); You can’t stop spring from coming in, But in the mystery of unanswered prayers Or winter from resigning, Let faith hold fast to this: Or still the waves or stay the winds, God cares, God cares, God cares! Or keep the day from dawning,

You can’t stop God from loving you, The sun won’t always shine, sometimes the rain-clouds form, His love is new each morning. And from the clearest sky may fall the thunder-storm; The unexpected stress awakens sleeping fears, You can’t stop ice from being cold, And faith must find its way through mists of bitter tears. You can’t stop fire from burning, Or hold the tide that’s going out, Delay its sure returning, Or halt the progress of the years, The flight of fame or fashion, You can’t stop God from loving you, His nature is compassion.

From love like this no power on earth the human heart can sever, You can’t stop God from loving you, Not God, not now, nor ever.

You can’t stop God! No, no, no, you just can’t stop him. You just can’t stop God from loving you.

Page 18 Page 7 Army cup of tea Hundreds and thousands

I’ve never been what you might call religious, There are hundreds of sparrows, thousands, millions, All them ’ymns and prayers ’ave no effect on me. They’re two a penny, far too many there must be; But when it comes to char that’s a different tale by far, There are hundreds and thousands, millions of sparrows, Oh, there’s nothing like an Army cup of tea! And God knows everyone and God knows me.

Oh, there’s nothing like an Army cup of tea, There are hundreds of flowers, thousands, millions, Oh, there’s nothing like an Army cup of tea. And flowers fair the meadows wear for all to see; They produce it on the spot, There are hundreds and thousands, millions of flowers, From Hong Kong to Aldershot, And God knows everyone and God knows me. Oh, there’s nothing like an Army cup of tea! There are hundreds of planets, thousands, millions, When my old man was lost in the Sahara, Way out in space each has a place by God’s decree; He was out there as a soldier boy, you see, There are hundreds and thousands, millions of planets, The red-shield van drove up, went and gave the lad a cup! And God knows everyone and God knows me. Oh, there’s nothing like an Army cup of tea! There are hundreds of children, thousands, millions, Now of course you can’t rely on every rumour, And yet their names are written on God’s memory; But when Regent Hall was graced by Royalty. There are hundreds and thousands, millions of children, She was overheard to say, as they brought it on a tray, And God knows everyone, and God knows everyone, “Oh, there’s nothing like an Army cup of tea!” And God knows everyone and God knows me.

Oh, there’s nothing in the world like a Nice, hot, thick, strong, exciting, intoxicating, psychedelic Army cup of tea!

Page 8 Page 17 Could you care? Cleanliness is next to godliness

Cleanliness is next to godliness, Take a scrubbing brush, take a Bible, Soap and water is divine, Get right down on your knees; It’s not enough to talk of holiness, Say a prayer awhile, Miss, you look like an angel, Your furniture has got to shine! Scrub the stair awhile, Tell me, underneath your wing, No use in going on about your washed white soul, If the Lord you’d please. Could you care? For me? If you dare not hang your washing on the line! Bringing joy to the joyless, Cleanliness is next to godliness, Such as only angels bring, Soap and water is divine! Could you care? For me? Is there hope for the hopeless? Is there faith for the faithless? Is there love for the loveless? Could there be? Could there be? Could you care? Could you care? For me?

I’m not really an angel, Look, I haven’t any wings! But I’ll care for you! You need love, you need friendship, You need oh so many things! Let me care for you. Yes, there’s hope for the hopeless! Yes, there’s faith for the faithless! Yes, there’s love for the loveless! Oh, it’s true! Oh, it’s true! Let me care? Let me care? For you! Care for you.

Page 16 Page 9 If you knew There’s someone who knows

If you knew, if you only knew, If you saw, if you only saw, What a plan God’s planned for you, What the future has in store, If you only knew! If only you saw! But you’ve closed your mind, What you’re called to be you’re afraid to be, Will not understand, So you close your eyes and refuse to see. So many fears, so many tears, Fail to recognise what his heart has planned. If you saw, if you only saw, Who can I turn to? Who cares? If you knew, if you only knew, What the future has in store! Who can explain? Who’ll ease the pain? What a plan God’s planned for you! Who can I turn to? Who cares? If you knew, if you only knew, We must recognise God’s moment when it comes, If you only knew. In the silence or with trumpets and with drums! Revelation of his will comes to everyone, But still we must recognise God’s moment when it comes.

There’s someone who knows, And there’s someone who cares; There’s someone who listens and answers our prayers. Our seasons of sorrow he readily shares; That someone is Jesus, he cares.

Shattered my schemes, broken my dreams, Who can I turn to? Who cares? Feeling deceived, bruised and bereaved, Who can I turn to? Who cares?

Page10 Page15 A dif-ferent man I dream of a day

Outside I’m going old and grey, Must there be always suffering always pain? I dream of a day, not far, far away, Inside I’m not at all that way. Must hatred always rule, love never reign? When in the world of men the love of God shall be seen. In helping folk I feel a different bloke, Must there be discord and dissent? Contented, happy all day! Must there be tears and discontent? Can flowers flourish where the thorns have grown? Can care at last be forced to leave her throne? Glory, glory, hallelujah! I dream of a day, not far, far away, Can blinded men be made to see? Beat this if you can! When in the world of men the love of God shall be seen. Can truth imprisoned be set free? Since I let the love of the Lord inside of me All tears shall be dried, all need satisfied, I’ve been a different man! Where men are warring now the peace of God intervene. Outside everything’s as before, Inside there’s been a major war, This dream comes true wherever Christ is crowned, And love has won, look what it’s gone and done. His coming stills the storm of strife. Transformed my interior! Wherever Jesus reigns there joy is found, And hope and peace and love and life. Outside there isn’t much to show, Inside there’s a big difference though, My outlook’s new, my disposition too, My misery just had to go!

Since I let the love of the Lord inside of me I’ve been, I’ve been, I’ve been a different man!

Page14 Page11 Down the street Wonders begin when the Lord comes in

I’m light fingered Freddy, I once got a duchess Wonders begin when the Lord comes in! (Interlude based on words: Before I went steady, right into my clutches Wonders begin when the Lord comes in! Glory, glory, hallelujah!) I loved to be out on the job, and asked her to marry her Fred. I once went to Hexham, She wasn’t too handsome, Lord, we are waiting for thee, We’re going to sing a new song. Perhaps it was Wrexham, But worth a king’s ransom, Waiting thy glory to see, Glory and power belong To burgle the house of a nob. And so I decided to wed. Boldly pleading for thy leading. Unto Jesus, unto Jesus! I’d just kind of climbed up the drain, I’d just got her saying I will, Lord, we are waiting for thee, We’re going to sing a new song, And just kind of broken a pane. When over the brow of the hill. Waiting thy glory to see, Glory and power belong All we’re needing comes from thee. Unto Jesus praise prolong. Down the street comes the band of The Salvation Army, For wanton destruction, With trumpets, tabrettes and trombones, Or was it obstruction? Lord, we are waiting for thee, We’re going to sing a new song, And they stay and they pray, I found myself thrown in the jug; Lord, we are waiting for thee, We’re going to sing a new song, And they beat out their message, The wardens kept bawling, Wonders begin when the Lord comes in! Wonders begin when the Lord comes in! In quite unmistakable tones; The food was appalling, Lord, we are waiting for thee. Wonders begin when the Lord comes in! And it kind of takes hold of a man, I felt such a terrible mug. We’re going to sing a new song! In a kind of a way nowt else can; But at least I’d escaped from the band, Not by the skill of our hands, And you’re glued to the spot, if you like it or not, And the peace and the quiet was grand. Not by our cleverest plans, And you just kind of alter your plan; Not by might, Lord, shall we fight, Lord. And you’re glued to the spot, if you like it or not, Not by the skill of our hands, ’Cause you feel you’re a new kind of man! Not by our cleverest plans, We delight in thy commands.

Page12 Page13 Follow me I’ll make my promises

There were a thousand voices calling, And my humble heart was stirred; There were a thousand voices calling, But above them all I heard...

Follow me! And we’ll cleanse the leper, Follow me! And we’ll raise the dead! Follow me! And we’ll cleanse the leper, I’ll make my promises, I’ll pray my prayer, Follow me! And we’ll raise the dead! Feeling you near to me, knowing you care, Since you will walk with me, come then what may, And the lame shall walk, and the dumb shall speak, I’ll keep the promises I make today. And the children shall be fed; And the lame shall walk, and the dumb shall speak, Lord, I would give to you so many things, And the children shall be fed. All that is mine today, all that the future brings, Gladly I make the gift, it’s yours to take, Follow me! But give to me your grace, for Jesus’ sake. And we’ll preach a gospel that will set the world ablaze; And if I should forget the prayer I’ve prayed, Follow me! Go back upon my word, and wish my vows unmade, And we’ll change this world of ours Your faithfulness to me will call me back, in a million kind of ways! Your love provide again the grace I lack. There were a thousand voices calling, His above them all I heard; So I got up and followed Jesus, And I took him at his word.
