When the Army comes to town (Glory! 1976) sets our feet tapping as the citizens of Folkestone What does the Spirit say to you? look forward to welcoming the Army to their town. If you have ears then hear from the Spirit, Do what the Spirit tells you to! Two songs then follow that speak of WONDER - the amazing wonder of God’s love for us. You can’t stop God from loving you (Hosea 1969) highlights the eternal truth the prophet proclaimed – You love me less than you used to love me, that however bad we humans might be, nothing will stop God from loving us. Hundreds and I know your strengths and your weakness too; thousands (Take-over Bid 1967), tells of the wonder that ‘God knows everyone and God knows Love me again as you used to love me, me!’ This is the children’s song from that musical. Since its writing it has been sung by hundreds and Do once again as you used to do. thousands of school children because the song has been included in school hymnals. You have a wonderful reputation, The next theme is CARING. In Could you care? (White Rose 1977), Clare, a Parisian young mother Far and away how your fame has spread! sunk in despair, approaches an Army girl who looks to her like an angel. Clare is seeking for someone True, you are always so very busy, who will care for her, and the ‘angel’ Salvationist promises that she will. There’s someone who No-one would guess that in fact you’re dead! knows (The Meeting 1990) continues in the same vein, with the verses asking whether there is someone who cares, and the refrain bringing the reassuring answer that there is: ‘That someone is You are so proud and suppose you’re clever, Jesus – he cares’. I know you’re neither cold nor hot! Luke warm! That’s you and it makes you useless, The programme continues with two songs from Take-over Bid that take TRANSFORMATION as their You think you’re rich but you’re not! You’re not! theme. In the enduring favourite A dif-ferent man Harry tells how his life has been totally changed ‘since I let the love of the Lord inside of me’. In Wonders begin when the Lord comes in, You are afraid of the Spirit’s leading, here rendered as a trombone instrumental, the very essence of the good news of transformation is I set before you an open door, stated in just the opening line alone. No man can shut what the Spirit opens, What in the world are you waiting for? Focusing on the theme of FOLLOWING, the song Follow me (Jesus Folk 1973) captures the effervescent joy of the disciples as they set out to follow Jesus. I’ll make my promises (The What does the Spirit say? But it is not only Freddy who witnesses, for the band does as well. It If I could know the secrets all men seek, The all embracing love of God, witnesses when ‘down the street comes the band of The Salvation Army with trumpets, tabrettes and If I could know the reason why the world is what it is, Unless I gave the love of God, trombones!’ Why every human being is unique... I would give nothing, I would give nothing. The next couple of songs are grouped under the theme of YEARNING. In I dream of a day from Unless I knew the love of God, Love is patient, love is always kind, Take-over Bid, John and Julie sing wistfully of the world they long to see. The number that follows, If The all embracing love of God, Love is never jealous or rude, you knew (Son of Man 1983) speaks of the yearnings of Jesus himself. He weeps over the city of Unless I knew the love of God Never selfish, slow to take offence, Jerusalem and, based on the New English Bible translation of Luke 19:41-44, sings words that apply I would know nothing I would know nothing! Cleanliness is next to godliness from If all the precious things that men have prized belonged to me, Love believes all things, love endures all things, Glory! tells of early-day community service as the Army lasses in Folkestone clean the house of Mrs And lovely things of unimagined worth... This song from Unless I had the love of God, Glory! – here arranged as an instrumental item – takes us to the funeral scene in that musical. August 15. Children’s ministry at home Letters to the Seven Churches Bible Passage: Revelation 2–3 Story Point: Jesus sent messages to seven churches. Key Passage: Revelation 11:15 Big Picture Question: What is the hope of the church? The church looks forward to Jesus’ return when He will make all things new. Parent Bible Study The Book of Revelation opens with John’s description of a vision. In the vision, Jesus gave John messages for seven lo- cal churches. Jesus told John to write these messages on a scroll and send them to the churches. In most cases, Jesus commended the church for their good work, warned them about the areas in which they needed cor- rection, and urged them to return to Him. Among other things, He warned the churches not to forget their love of the Lord. He encouraged them not to be afraid of being tested. He urged those who were surrounded by evil not to deny their faith. Each time, Jesus promised to reward those who remain faithful to Him. The church is made up of people who have trusted in Jesus, who are committed to one another, and who meet together to worship Jesus and share the gospel. Jesus loves the church as His bride. (See Eph. 5:25-27; Rev. 19:7-9.) Jesus’ message called the churches to turn away from their sin and remain faithful to Him. The Lord is slow to anger (Ex. 34-6-7) and patient, wanting everyone to repent (2 Pet. 3:9). Jesus warned specific churches in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), but the problems they faced can still be found in churches today.

Jeffrey Norman Scott: My favorite pizza place ever was Symposium Greek pizza in Davis, CA, though I'm relatively happy at any Round Table. As for my favorite topping, just yesterday I was rereading "Ash Wednesday" by T.S. Eliot (who can guess the topping?): Lady, three white leopards sat under a juniper-tree In the cool of the day, having fed to satiety On my legs my heart my liver and that which had been contained In the hollow round of my skull. And God said Shall these bones live? shall these Bones live? And that which had been contained In the bones (which were already dry) said chirping: Because of the goodness of this Lady And because of her loveliness, and because She honours the Virgin in meditation, We shine with brightness. And I who am here dissembled Proffer my deeds to oblivion, and my love To the posterity of the desert and the fruit of the gourd. It is this which recovers My guts the strings of my eyes and the indigestible portions Which the leopards reject. Slow Turning John Hiatt Fanzine - Issue 10 Welcome to Issue 10! Can you believe Slow Turning: John Hiatt Fanzine can now measure its issues in double-digits? Neither can we. Seems like only yesterday yours truly fanzine girl was typing into a 4MB Compaq computer with a pile of photocopies from the local library piled high around me to create our first issue. Now we can all get daily news alerts from all corners of the globe thanks to a mighty invention called Google. It is my humble hope that I can still offer a service to you dear readers by putting together some of the best reviews, interviews, and various facts that are out there about John and his music. One of the most exciting pieces of recent news came from Ted Drozdowski of Gibson.com: “.. guitar builders at Gibson’s acoustic shop in Bozeman, Montana, have now paid tribute to Hiatt’s longtime main axes with a limited edition John Hiatt Model. The big-bodied dreadnought built to Hiatt’s specifications of a solid Sitka spruce top, solid mahogany back and sides, and a one-piece mahogany neck with a modified v-shaped profile generates the same kind of rich, ringing, harmonically complex tones that grace Hiatt’s records...” And speaking of beautiful tones, John’s daughter, Lilly Hiatt, is starting to make her mark on the music scene. Her band, The Dropped Ponies, recently played at a New West Records party in Austin around the time John was in town for the South by Southwest Music Festival.
