The 1994-95 University of San Diego men's basketball program, under the direction of first year coach Brad Holland, returns seven lettermen and three starters from last year's squad that finished 18-11 and that advanced to the West Coast Conference Tournament championship game. The returning starters include senior guard Doug Harris, junior for ward Sean Flannery and junior point guard David Fizdale. With ten of his fourteen players underclassmen, Coach Holland will be counting on the above trio to supply both experience and leadership. Leading scorer Doug Harris (6-0, Guard), an All-WCC choice as a sophomore and an honorable mention All-WCC pick last year, is back for his senior year after topping last year's team in scoring with 14.4 points per game. He also was named to the WCC Post-Season Tournament team after scoring 20 and 25 points in wins over Portland and Gonzaga. For the season, Doug scored in double-digits 23 times with a career-high 27 points against UC Irvine Juniors Sean Flannery (6-5, F, 9.4 ppg) and David Fizdale (6-2, G, 8.0 ppg) also return to the starting lineup. Flannery, who fi~ished fourth on the team in scoring, will be one the team's best outside shooters this season. Last year he bombed in 49 treys and posted a career-high 24 points against USF when he nailed 6-of-9 three pointers. He has the versatility to play small for ward as well as both guard spots. Fizdale started the last nineteen games last year and has turned into a fine point guard. Besides his 8.0 ppg average, David finished first in steals (44) and second in assists (103) and blocks (12). To help fill the void left by graduated seniors Brooks Barnhard (6-9, Fl C, First Team All-WCC, 14.0 ppg), Joe Temple (6-3, F, 13.2 ppg) and Chris Grant (6-8, C, 6.3 ppg), the Toreros will look for sophomores Brian Bruso (6- 7, Forward, 7.4 ppg and 4.2 rpg) and James Black (6-11, , 2.5 ppg) to step their games up a notch. Bruso, who sat out the 1992-93 season after suffering a stress fracture in his foot, was one of the WCC's best freshmen last year as he converted 55.7 percent of his field goals (73xl3 l). With a year of experience under his belt and added strength gained during the off-season, Black will only get better with each game played. Other returning lettermen include junior guard Val Hill (6-4, 215 lbs.) and sophomore center Rocco Raffo (6-9, 228 lbs.). Three players back that sat out the 1993-94 season include 6-2 sophomore guard Casey Sheahan (played for Coach Holland at Cal State Fullerton in 1992-93), 6-8 freshman forward Andre Speech and 6-6 freshman swingman Mike Courtney. The Toreros program has four new freshmen on this year's squad. Kareem Mutrie (Carson, CA) is a 5-11, 165 lb. point guard who averaged 19.9 ppg and 8.9 assists at Bishop Montgomery; Lamont Smith (The Colony, TX) is a 6-2, 175 lb. guard that averaged 16.0 ppg while leading The Colony HS to a 31-2 record; Ryan Williams (Seattle, WA) averaged 23 .1 ppg and 12.0 rpg while helping O'Dea High School to a 3rd place finish in the Washington State AA Championships; and Nosa Obasohan (Houston, TX) averaged 19.4 ppg and led the Houston area in three pointers made with 108 while helping Alief Elsik High School to a record of 31-4. Smith will sit out the 1994-95 season as he recovers from knee surgery. After two exhibitions against Cairnes, Australia (Nov. 19th) and High Five America (Nov. 22nd), Coach Holland will open the season at the Univer sity of Kansas on Nov. 26th. Notre Dame comes to town on December 3rd as the Toreros host the Fighting Irish at the San Diego Sports Arena. Other games that highlight the nonconference schedule include three opponents (UC Irvine, Nevada and Pacific) as well as another trip to the midwest to take on Drake and Iowa State of the Big Eight. USO will open up West Coast Conference play at San Francisco on Jan. 7th with their first home WCC contest against Gonzaga on Jan. 12th. The WCC Tournament will be held March 4-6 at Santa Clara's Toso Pavilion. TORE RO ROSTER Page 3

He was hired September 19, 1994 and replaces who resigned to take an assistant coach position with the of the National Basketball Association. The 37-year-old Hol land becomes USD's third head coach since the program turned Division I in 1979, and its tenth coach overall since the program's first season of competi tion in 1955-56. Holland comes to USD from Cal State Fullerton where as head coach the past two seasons he revitalized the Titans program. States USD Director of Athletics Tom Iannacone, "The University of San Diego is pleased and excited to announce the appointment of Brad Holland as our new men's basketball coach. Brad possesses those personal qualities that are consistent with the values of USD. He understands the role of athletics within our university mission." The past two years Holland won rave reviews for the manner in which he revitalized the Cal State Fullerton men's basketball program. During the 1992-93 season, his first as a head coach, the Titans finished 15-12 and posted the school's first winning record in four years while going 10-8 in the Big West Conference. Along the way they beat every team in the conference except New Mexico State, capping the year with an exciting one-point home victory over nationally ranked UNLV. His 1993-94 team, which lost three players to season-ending injuries prior to the start of the season, finished 8-19 overall and eighth in Big West play. They did have some memorable victories -- they won at Nevada and UC Santa Barbara's Thunderdome; they won for the third year in a row at UC Irvine; and they knocked offUNLV with a 84- 75 victory at the Thomas and Mack Center. Prior to his appointment at Cal State Fullerton, Holland was an assistant coach on Jim Harrick's staff at UCLA from August, 1988 to March, 1992. He helped the Bruins return to national prominence while compiling a 93-35 record that took them to four NCAA tournaments. Success as a head coach is merely the latest positive mark Holland has made on Southern basketball. He was a basketball and football star at Crescenta Valley High School. He was a four-year basketball letterman at UCLA and played with the and two other National Basketball Association teams before retiring in 1982 due to a knee injury. He entered private business and also was a broadcaster for Prime Ticket from 1985 to 1988. Holland was the last player recruited by Coach and became a part of four Pac-10 championship teams at UCLA from 1976 to 1979, two under Coach and two under Coach . The Bruins went 102-17 during Hollands' s playing career and he was honorable mention All-America and second-team Academic All-America as a senior. That year he averaged 17.5 points and 4.8 assists and had a .598 field goal percentage, the best ever by a Bruin guard. He graduated in 1979 from UCLA with a B.A. degree in Sociology. The Lakers drafted Holland in 1979, the 14th player taken in the first round, and went on to win the 1980 NBA championship. The rookie guard scored eight points in the decisive sixth game at Philadel phia. He finished his playing career in 1981-82 with Washington and Milwaukee. Holland and his wife, Leslie, have three children, Kristen and Lisa, 12-year-old twins, and Kyle, age 2. ASSISTANT COACHES Page s RANDY BENNETT

Randy Bennett begins his seventh year at the University of San Diego as a full-time assistant coach for the Toreros basketball program. His primary responsibilities will be in the areas of recruiting, scouting and on court coaching. Prior to his 1988 appointment at USD, Randy coached two seasons (1986-88) with the University of Idaho as a part-time assistant. The 1987-88 team finished 19-11 and second in the Big Sky Conference. Before his stint with Idaho, he was a volunteer assistant at USD (1985-86) while finishing his undergraduate degree at the University of California, San Diego. The past seven summers he has directed USD's Boys Basketball Camps. A 1986 graduate of UC San Diego, Randy received his B.S. degree in Arrimal Physiology. He played two years of basketball at UC San Diego (1983-85) and two years at Mesa Community College (1980-82) in Mesa, AZ under his dad, Tom Bennett. In his two years at Mesa, the team went 56-10 and made it to the nationals his freshman year. Randy, who received his M.A. in Education this past spring at USD, is single and resides in San Diego.

MIKE HAUPT Mike Haupt begins his third year at the University of San Diego as a full-time assistant. He will assist in the areas of recruiting, scouting and on-court coaching. The 28-year-old Haupt played two years (1986-87; 1987-88) at USD. As a junior in 1987-88, Mike started 17 straight games and was the team's leading rebounder before he was lost for the remainder of the season and his career with an injury to his right knee. He received the team's Leadership and Student-Athlete of the Year awards after the 1986-87 campaign. A 1989 graduate of USD with a degree in Business, Mike was USD's graduate assistant during the 1989-90 season. Between 1989-92, Mike worked as Assistant Director of Operations for the University of San Diego. In 1991 he graduated with his Master's degree from USD's School of Education. During 1990-92, Mike held the title of League Director for the Youth Basket ball Association (YBA), a position that encompassed San Diego County freshman high school teams. Mike prepped locally at Mira Mesa High School and was the 1984 San Diego County Player of the Year.

The 25-year-old Smith is a 1992 graduate of Hamilton College where he earned a degree in English and minor in Sociology. A four-year basketball per former on Hamilton's team, Smith helped lead his 1990-91 squad to a 26-1 season (24-0 regular season finish) and #1 national ranking among NCAA Division III teams. As a starting point guard, he averaged lO.O ppg and led the team in assists, steals, free throw percentage and three-point accuracy. San Diego is truly "America's Finest City." A modem metropolis (second largest in California) and a popular year-round resort, San Diego spreads from the coast to the desert, including cliffs, mesas, hills, canyons and valleys. San Diego also surrounds one of California's greatest natural harbors which has been a dominant factor in determining the city's history, economy and development. As home of the largest naval air station on the west coast, the federal government ranks first in economic importance to the city with the aerospace equipment industry second. Tourism closely follows as third. Business and pleasure coexist in harmony in San Diego. The climate, attractive setting and recreational facilities make San Diego "America's Finest City." According to Sports Illustrated, "For sheer numbers of participants, diversity of pursuits of involvement, San Diego must rank as the sports fitness capital of the U.S ." Sports are a major feature of the San Diego lifestyle. One can sail, swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel, wind-surf on 70 miles of public beach or golf at any of the over 75 golf courses throughout the county. Balboa Park, a 1, 158-acre recreation and cultural center, offers 25 tennis courts, two gymnasiums, two municipal golf courses and one of the nation's finest zoos. Mission Bay Park is a 4,600-acre playground for jogging, fishing, bicycling, tennis, golf and kite flying. As well as participating in recreational activities, San Diego supports their professional teams - the Charg ers in football, the Padres in baseball, the Sockers in soccer and the Gulls in hockey. Whatever sporting activity there is, it's here in San Diego - the sports capital of the U.S.A.

The University of San Diego men's basketball program, un der the direction of tenth year coach Hank Egan, completed one of its most successful campaigns this past season finishing with an overall record of 18-11. The Toreros finished in strong fashion, winning seven of their final ten contests and advancing to the West Coast Conference Tournament Championship game for the first time since the tourney's inception in 1987. "This past season we saw a mixture of young and veteran players put together a team that performed well," said Hank Egan, who this past August resigned his post at USD to take an assistant coaching position with the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basket ball Association. "While there were several outstanding performances, it was mostly a group effort over the course of the season with a vari ety of people stepping up on occasion. When the players who would be returning were asked to evaluate the season, they selected many different factors as being the significant reason for our success. There was, however, one constant from each and every returner. To a man they credited the four seniors for their committment, dedication and attitude through good times and bad as being the most significant factor. All of them believe that the future is bright but only if they can lead like Neal Meyer, Brooks Barnhard, Joe Temple and Chris Brooks Barnhard - First Team All-wee Grant." Heading into the WCC Post-Season Tournament the Toreros were seeded fourth after their 7-7 WCC finish. The Toreros knocked out #5 seed Portland (63-57) in the first round, upset #1 seed and regular-season champion Gonzaga in the semi-finals (83-75) before dropping a tough 53-56 decision to #2 Pepperdine University in the nationally televised (ESPN) championship contest. The Toreros were the only WCC team to knock off first place finisher Gonzaga twice during the 1993-94 season. In addition, the Toreros collected impressive nonconference victories against the University of the Pacific (83-66), the University of Richmond (87-64), UC Irvine (96-82), Manhattan College (64-61) and Drake University (96-80). San Diego was again tough in the comforts of their USD Sports Center finishing with a home record of 10-2. Senior center Brooks Barnhard (Escondido, CA) was named First Team All-West Coast Conference as well as being selected All-WCC Tournament after averaging 14.0 ppg and 6.5 rpg and leading the WCC in three point accuracy (.472). Senior swingman Joe Temple (San Diego, CA) and junior guard Doug Harris (Chandler, AZ) were selected Honorable Mention All-WCC with freshman forward Brian Bruso (South Lake Tahoe, CA) being named to the WCC All-Academic Team. Head Coach Hank Egan, in his final season, set a couple of personal milestones as he recorded his 150th win as USD's coach and his 300th career victory during the year. The Toreros were a fun team to watch as they led the West Coast Conference in three-pointers made and attempted and were the league's most accurate team from the free throw line (73.2% ). The Toreros bombed in a school-record 235 three-pointers on 619 attempts (.380), getting at least 44 treys from four different players. That latter feat had happened only once before in the WCC. Both Brooks Barnhard and Doug Harris tallied 59 treys, falling one short of the USD record (60, Marty Munn, 1987-88), while Sean Flannery hit for 49 and Joe Temple added 44. WEST COAST CONFERENCE Page 28

THE WEST COAST CONFERENCE~~~~~~~~~~ The basketball courts of the West Coast Conference run from the eastern pine forests of the Pacific Northwest to the crowded beaches of San Diego, California. Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, the University of Portland, Saint Mary's College, the University of San Diego, the University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University make up the NCAA Division I league. All are private institutions with exceptional academic and athletic traditions, and have made up the WCC for the past fourteen years. The current alignment has remained unchanged since 1980. San Francisco has won 16 men's hoops titles followed by Pepperdine (10), Santa Clara (6), Loyola Marymount (4), Saint Mary's (3), San Diego (2) and Gonzaga (1). Basketball is what got the West Coast Conference its start as the California Basketball Association back in 1952. No one suspected at the time the number of legendary players who would battle on the courts of the league in the subsequent 43 years. Former WCC players sport NBA championship rings (, San Francisco), Olympic Gold Medals (, Gonzaga), and statues in the National Basketball Hall of Fame (, K.C. Jones, and Phil Woolpert, USF), Phil Smith, Dennis Johnson, , Darwin Cook, , , , the late , and most recently, spent their formative years pounding the hardwoods of the Conference. The WCC is no longer merely a basketball league, as it offers a total of 11 championships for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, tennis and soccer) and women (basketball, cross country, tennis, soccer, and volleyball). The league owns NCAA automatic bids in men's basketball, women's basketball, men's soccer, baseball and volleyball. Last year, the WCC advanced a representative from each of its sports to the NCAA championships. PITCHES, DIAMONDS, COURTS AND COURSES~~~~~ While basketball gets most of the attention, it's not the only WCC men's sport. In fact, the conference has gained national recognition as having one of the top baseball and soccer leagues in the country. Santa Clara tied for the national soccer crown in 1989, Portland has been in five straight NCAA soccer tournaments while San Diego was the 1992 national runner-up and made it to the NCAA's Sweet 16 in 1990 and the second round in 1993. USF has won the soccer national championship four times. In baseball, Pepperdine won the 1992 national baseball title, and has won nine of the last eleven WCC crowns. Countless players have gone on to professional baseball careers after playing collegiately in the WCC. In tennis, the University of San Diego captured the WCC crowns in 1989 and 1990 and Pepperdine has won the past four. USD's Jose Luis Noriega became the school's first ever four-time NCAA All American, and participated in the NCAA's all four years he competed (1989-92). This is the tenth season of WCC women's sports, and the eighth with conference membership mirroring the men's league. Gonzaga, Portland and St. Mary's upgraded their programs to the Division I level just seven years ago. Gonzaga won the women's basketball title in their first Division I season. St. Mary's won it in 1989 and 1990, and Santa Clara took the title in 1991. Santa Clara, Portland and San Francisco ended in a three-way tie in 1992. 1993 marked San Diego's first WCC crown and first year in the NCAA Tournament while Santa Clara won last season. Portland has captured the cross-country crown in each of the last seven years. Santa Clara won the volleyball title in 1993, but San Diego finished 24-6 under WCC Coach of the Year Sue Snyder and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time at the NCAA Division I level. The San Diego women's tennis team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times in the past six years. 1994 marks the third year for women's soccer as a WCC sport. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS~~~~~~~~~~~~ Current WCC members have won 14 NCAA team championships, most recently the 1992 baseball crown by Pepperdine. USF has seven titles (four in soccer, two in basketball, one in tennis) followed by Pepperdine with four (three in volleyball and one in baseball), and Santa Clara (soccer) and Gonzaga (boxing) with one apiece. Pepperdine has three individual champions and Gonzaga has a trio of boxing winners. San Francisco has won individual championships in tennis and fencing while Loyola Marymount won an individual track title. San Diego picked up a pair of Division II team tennis crowns and Pepperdine won two track awards prior to joining the WCC. Portland captured its first national title in 1986, in NAIA cross country. Saint Mary's also won the NAIA soccer championship that year. 1993-94All-eonference Team 1993-94 Final Basketball Standings Brooks Barnhard San Diego F Gonzaga C School All wee Canaan Chatman Portland F Gonzaga 22-8 12-2 Geoff Goss Gonzaga G Pepperdine 19-11 8-6 Pepperdine F San Francisco 17-11 8-6 Wyking Jones LMU F San Diego 18-11 7-7 Chris Johnson St. Mary's G Portland 13-17 6-8 Damin Lopez Pepperdine G Santa Clara 13-14 6-8 Orlando Smart San Francisco G Saint Mary's 13-14 5-9 Gerald Walker San Francisco G Loyola Marymount 6-21 4-10 USD Honorable Mention: Doug Harris, Joe Temple 199S wee TOURNAMENT Page 29 COMBINED EVENT CREATES 14-GAME HOOP FEST The ninth annual West Coast Conference basketball tournament tips off at Santa Clara University's Toso Pavilion on March 2-6 with the WCC's auto matic bids to the men 's and women's NCAA tournament at stake. For the first time, the WCC's basketball tournaments are combined into one five-day, 14- game festival of hoops. This is the fourth time the women will pick their NCAA entrant via a tournament but the first time all eight schools will participate. All 16 teams take part beginning with the women's first round on Thurs day, March 2, with two doubleheader sessions. Session 1 starts at 12 noon and Session 2 follows at 6:00 p.m. The second game of each doubleheader tips off 30 minutes after the conclusion of the preceding game. The women continue with their semi-finals on Friday, March 3, the only action of the day. The men get underway with four games on Saturday, March 4, starting with a doubleheader at 12 noon followed by another twinbill at 6:00 p.m. The women's finalists take the day off. All men's and women's semifinalists will be re-seeded after the first round so that the highest remaining seed will play the lowest remaining seed. Sunday features a unique tripleheader for one ticket price. The women's championship game starts at 3:00 p.m. followed by the two men's semi-finals, all televised by SportsChannel. The men's championship tips off for a live ESPN national TV audience at 9:07 p.m. on Monday, March 6.

A Message From President Hughes

The men's basketball program is integral to the University's athletic endeavors, just as the ath letic program is integral to our view of education - which is that education should develop the whole person. This program moved from NCAA Division II to Division I in 1979, and each year has seen in creasing strength and competitive capabilities in the USD team. The University is proud of the team's accomplishments, and pleased to support the program in every way possible, including scholarship aid to our athletes, recognition of the values of the program, and promotion of intercollegiate athletics. I believe our USD team will be receiving some national atten tion this year, and I look forward to watching the season's events unfold. Author E. Hughes President

Fred Brooks John McNamara Msgr. J.B. Eagen Vice President - Financial Affairs Vice President - University Relations Vice President for Missions and Ministry DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Page 31 TOM IANNACONE Director Of Athletics Tom Iannacone begins his seventh year as the University of San Diego Director of Athletics. He assumed the position September 1, 1988 after a nationwide search. The 53-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in his first six years. His accomplishments at USO include an internal reorgani zation of the athletic department, plus improvements in the major areas of personnel, scholarship assistance, facilities, promotions and market ing, fund raising, drug education, academic support, and a new univer sity approved plan for scholarship support and sports sponsorship. In addition, he was instrumental in USD gaining membership to the Pio neer Football League, which began play in 1993. Iannacone came to the University of San Diego with an im pressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of intercollegiate athletics. Prior to USO he was Director of Athletics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offerings and scholarships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of additional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual development of athletics. He served on sev eral committees, most notably the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Confer ence (ECAC) Infractions committee and the Northeast Conference committee on conference development. Iannacone also served as a consultant to the NCAA I-AAA Football Com- mittee. Now that USO football is competing at the I-AA level, he is a member of the I-AA Athletic Directors Association Ex ecutive Committee. Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assistant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an as sistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham his tory, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983 Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contri butions to Fordham athletics. He also served on various Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Norwalk, Ridgefield and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his collegiate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical edu cation from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom Jr., Jennifer and Eric. Both Tom Jr. and Jennifer are recent gradu ates of USO while Eric is in his senior year here.
