To you all, I say a big Thank You! iv ABSTRACT Anglican dioceses established by The Church Mission Society and other Western- founded Christian denominations in East Africa were envisaged to grow and become self-governing, self-propagating and self-supporting. The first two goals(to be self- governing and self-propagating) have more or less been achieved. The third goal (the pursuit of self-support) is at a critical stage, especially considering that resources, in terms of funding and personnel, are in decline. This research sought to document the factors that contribute to, or hinder, the role that lay people (business people in particular) can play in sustaining the ministry and mission of Anglican dioceses. The research methods chosen for data collection consisted of interactive fieldwork. In this, formal and informal interviews were conducted. The interviewees were selected mainly from Anglican dioceses, with their input beingcorroborated by Methodists, Evangelical Lutheran and PresbyterianChurch leaders from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Interviews were conducted, first, with church leaders who were in office at the time when John Gatu declared a moratorium on Western missionaries in 1974. Next came interviews with leaders of the 1990s and 2000s. For each leader, a corroborative project was documented. A limited quantitative questionnaire was administered for triangulation purposes.The data were analysed to identify the themes and patterns that emerged. This phase was followed by an extensive literature review. The research methodology utilised the Praxis Cycle, developed by Cochrane, De Gruchy and Peterson (1990) in their book, In Word and Deed,which has its roots in the “see, judge, act” method of the Belgian Cardinal, Joseph Cardijn,founder of the Young Christian Workers movement. The analysis allowed me to examine the interplay between business and mission, using the seven-point Praxis Cycle, modified by JNJ Kritzinger(2008:771) to assess the spirituality of BAM and its contribution to Christian mission. Other movements of the Praxis Cycle are practical projects, theological reflection, contextual analysis, ecclesial analysis, agency and reflexivity. The literature review was analysed in terms of four primary dimensions: Business as Business (profit maximisation), Mission as Business(profit from v philanthropy),Mission as Mission(philanthropy from profits), and Business as Mission (profit for the common good). The fourth dimensionwas exploredas an overarching visionfor churches seeking to grow towards financial sustainability. Mwaura Kenyatta University Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies Port Dickson, Malaysia 31st July – 7th August 2004 Introduction I count myself honoured to be asked to address this 11th International Conference of IAMS on the theme, “The Integrity of Mission in the Light of the Gospel: Bearing Witness to the Spirit.” When I was asked to contribute to this conference, I was notably delighted and alarmed. Delighted because of the gratiousness shown to me by the organizing committee; but nevertheless alarmed because the task presented a dilemma. To write adequately about the issues of integrity of mission, requires an exhaustive survey of the context and content of mission by the church in Africa in a context that is both diverse and complex. This was a daunting task bearing in mind that I do not consider myself a missiologist in the real sense of the word and neither am I a clergyperson or engaged in ministry on an active basis. Perhaps however, this gives me a privileged objective position from which to ask the questions, what is mission? What is the content and context of mission in Africa? What does integrity mean and how does it relate to mission? In what ways does the Church in Africa embody integrity of mission? What challenges face the Church in Africa today and how is she responding to them? How can the Church in Africa be better equipped to be a bearer of the Good News in an integral manner? This paper will address these questions bearing in mind that mission implies, “the calling of the church at every level and in every place to be part of God’s mission in the world” (Kirk 1999:24).

    “The Thing Behind the Thing”: The role and influence of religious leaders on the use of traditional practices of acknowledgement in Uganda1 Joanna R. Quinn2 Review of Faith and International Affairs 8.1 (Spring 2010): forthcoming. The use of traditional practices to socially acknowledge past abuses is not yet fully understood. In places like Uganda, it has recently become fashionable to urge the use of traditional mechanisms. Yet little is understood about how or why such practices work or whether their use ought to be supported. As one piece of a larger study of traditional practices in Uganda, this paper considers the role and influence of Uganda’s religious leaders on the use of traditional practices. It considers the stands six major faith groups on the use of such traditional practices, before turning to their consideration of the use of neo-traditional practices.     th Volume 1, Issue 18 19 July 2009 The Episcopal Church USA ‘Walks Apart’ from the Anglican Communion The Episcopal Church USA (TEC) concluded its triennial legislative General Convention on Friday, 17th July 2009, in Anaheim, California. During the ten-day meeting of their governing body, Deputies and Bishops passed two resolutions clearly signaling TEC’s desire to “walk apart” from the Anglican Communion. The Convention passed by a 2-1 margin resolutions permitting the election and consecration as Bishops of practicing homosexuals as well as the collection and development of rites for the blessing of same-sex unions. The Convention further permitted Bishops to authorize rites for the blessing of same-sex unions in their dioceses. Moreover, the Convention, when given an opportunity to uphold the uniqueness of Christ, defeated such a resolution. Many in the worldwide Anglican Communion, especially in the UK, who were in denial about the depth of apostasy by the Episcopal Church have acknowledged, with these resolutions, the departure of TEC from the historical and Biblical faith of Anglicanism and recognize that TEC has chosen to “walk apart” from the Anglican Communion. “In Windsor’s language, Bishop N.T. (Tom) Wright, the influential evangelical they have chosen to ‘walk Bishop of Durham, England, and principal author of the apart’.” Bishop N.T. Windsor Report – a report written in response to the Wright, Durham, England Primates request to address the torn fabric of the Anglican Communion after TEC’s consecration of a practicing homosexual as Bishop of New Hampshire – concluded in a 15th July (London) Times Editorial that these decisions mark “a clear break with the rest of the Anglican Communion.” Bishop Wright continued, “Both the bishops and deputies (lay and clergy) of TEC knew exactly what they were doing.

    Mission Educators Forum: The Continued Relevance of David Bosch Dr John Corrie Introduction Thank you for the opportunity – even though I’m not teaching mission full-time now, my passion for mission and the teaching of mission is undiminished, as is also my passion for Bosch. So both those passions happily come together in this conference. I began teaching at ANCC in 1991, the year of publication of Transforming Mission, so that was a tremendous gift to me as I started to work out a theology of mission and how to teach it. I didn’t have a theology of mission before that – at least not one that was worked out. I had certainly not been given it at theological college, so I was working it out as I went along in ministry. So Bosch has been my ever-present friend and mentor as I have travelled that journey over the last 25 years. Students would say that if Barth had a newspaper in one hand and a Bible in the other, Corrie had Bosch in one hand and a Bible in the other. The key question I have grappled with over the years is this: what is our aim when we teach mission? One of my main aims has always be to give students the knowledge and tools to be able construct their own theology and ecclesiology of mission and to be able to use that in their future practice of mission. As we know there are theologies and ecclesiologies (plural) of mission and students need to be aware of the range of the alternatives and be able to critique them, including being aware of the strengths and weaknesses of their own approach.

The Group had been commissioned by the Archbishops’ Council and the Church Commissioners to consider the optimal use of the Commissioners’ funds in 2005-7 and in the longer- term. There was a mixed reaction to the Group’s proposals and the Synod debate was adjourned. It was subsequently agreed by the Archbishops’ Council, Church Commissioners and House of Bishops’ Standing Committee that the Working Group had raised some important questions in relation to the Church’s mission and funding, and that further work should be undertaken to address them.

    What is Gafcon – Russell Powell I do sympathise with you this afternoon sitting there on those chairs! Please stay with us this afternoon because I think what Phillip has to say next is extremely important. While I have sympathised with you, I will give you an opportunity to sympathise with me. What we will spend two and a half hours listening to this afternoon is what I have two minutes to brief journalists on, and what the archbishop has 20 seconds to comment on in the media. Not an easy task. My purpose over the next couple of minutes is to unfold some of the aims of the Global Anglican Future Conference and then some of the detail. The speakers before me have set the scene in which it takes place. The organisers, including Archbishop Jensen have been meeting this week in England. In their preparations they have restated the goals of the conference that will be useful if I mention here. The Goals are – 1. Provide an opportunity for fellowship, to continue to experience and proclaim the transforming love of Christ. 2. Develop a renewed understanding of our identity as Anglican Christians within our current context. 3. Prepare for an Anglican future in which the Gospel is un-compromised and Christ- centred mission a top priority. The idea for such a conference came out of a meeting of Primates and Bishops in Nairobi in December. The event was not designed to be an alternative Lambeth – if you had wanted to do that you would have put it on at the same time as Lambeth.

The landmark outcome of this Congress was the Lausanne Covenant supported by the 2,430 participants from 150 nations. The covenant proclaims the substance of the Christian faith as historically declared in the creeds and adds a clear missional dimension to our faith.
