  • Sparrow Records Discography
Sparrow Discography by Mike Callahan, David Edwards & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Sparrow Records Discography Sparrow is a Contemporary Christian label founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn. Hearn was the A&R Director for Word Records’ Myrrh label, founded a few years earlier also as a Contemporary Christian label. Sparrow also released records under their Birdwing subsidiary. Hearn’s Sparrow label was in competition with Hearn’s old boss, Word Records, and was quite successful. Even today, Sparrow is among the top Christian labels. Hearn sold the label to EMI in 1992, and it was placed under the Capitol Christian Music Group. Sparrow signed a distribution agreement with MCA in April, 1981 to release their product in the secular market while the regular Sparrow issues were distributed to Christian stores and Christian radio stations. The arrangement with MCA lasted until October, 1986, when Sparrow switched distribution to Capitol. • Recommended Ccm Artists & Bands of a Specific Musical
RECOMMENDED CHRISTIAN-LABEL ARTISTS & BANDS OF A SPECIFIC MUSICAL GENRE In compiling this list I realize that some artists/bands mainly perform one particular style of music and other artists perform across several musical styles or genres. I have therefore endeavored to be as specific as possible and name particular albums of the artist/band that, in my view, are outstanding in a particular musical genre. NB. ‘v.s.’ stands for ‘vocal similarities’ ‘m.s.’ stands for ‘musical similarities’ Adult Contemporary/Pop Bob Carlisle – what a voice! John Elefante – brilliant vocalist (formerly with Kansas) Jon Gibson – the closest CCM gets to Stevie Wonder (‘Body & Soul’ & ‘Love Education’ CDs highly recommended) Amy Grant – esp. her ‘Lead Me On’ & ‘Behind The Eyes’ CD’s Paul Q-Pek: ‘Touch The Ground’ CD (v.s. to Peter Gabriel at times) Connie Scott: ‘Live To Tell’ (her strongest effort) Michael W. Smith: esp. his ‘The Big Picture’ CD (his magnum opus – contains great keyboard work) Out Of The Grey – quality ‘art pop’ if there is such a genre (great female vocals and guitar work) 2nd Chapter Of Acts – the pioneer of multi-vocal groups (they harmonized well without sounding ‘sugary/syrupy’) Sheila Walsh – esp. her ‘Shadowlands’ CD (excellent) Roma Waterman – she possesses the voice range of England’s Kate Bush (with v.s. at times); one of Australia’s best female vocalists Alternative/Indie/Modern Rock Adam Again – anything by them, but esp. their ‘Homeboys’ CD ApologetiX: ‘Ticked’ CD (a brilliant re-working [parodies] of well-known mainstream alternative/indie songs) Battered Fish – esp. the ‘Modern’ CD (brilliant!) The Choir – anything by them (‘Chase The Kangaroo’ & ‘Circle Slide’ CD’s are absolute alternative gems) Dear Ephesus: ‘The Absent Sounds Of Me’ CD (brilliant emo!) Dumpster: ‘See Through Me’ & ‘sky-fi’ CD’s Henrys, The: ‘She’s My Hallelujah’ EP (brilliant and oh-so-laid-back, leaving you wanting for more) Michael Knott – esp.

  • Margaret Becker-World Vision
Margaret Becker Headlines recite the faceless statistics of poverty; Grammy- nominated singer/songwriter Margaret Becker tells of the people she has met over the past 17 years as an artist/ambassador for World Vision. With tenderness, wit, and passion, she recalls the tragedies and triumphs she has witnessed among the poor in Africa and South America. In their lives, she finds beacons of faith, parables of generosity, and evidence of the greatness of God in the smallest of details. Internationally acclaimed for her music, Margaret is also an eloquent author and engaging speaker who mines the moments of everyday life to discover deeper truths. Wherever she speaks, she hopes to leave lasting impressions that motivate listeners to act. With vivid detail, she speaks of the widow in Malawi who walks nearly three hours in hopes of selling a bucket of goat milk to provide for her two children and the orphans she has taken in. Amid desperate circumstances, Margaret learns where there is life, there is hope. Deep in the Amazon, Margaret meets a tribal family who trudges five miles along a dry river bed to bring buckets of water to neighbors who are thirsty. Asking why they go to such trouble, they reply: “They needed water. We had water.” The bureaucracy of benevolence becomes absurd in the presence of simple personal selflessness. She recalls the Zambian princess weakened by AIDS but who sparkles with life as she wages her own educational campaign to “stop these senseless deaths.” There’s the farmer who labored for three months digging a mile-long trench with a coffee can to bring water to his parched land.
