A Brief History of Christ Church MEDIEVAL PERIOD Christ Church was founded in 1546, and there had been a college here since 1525, but prior to the Dissolution of the monasteries, the site was occupied by a priory dedicated to the memory of St Frideswide, the patron saint of both university and city. St Frideswide, a noble Saxon lady, founded a nunnery for herself as head and for twelve more noble virgin ladies sometime towards the end of the seventh century. She was, however, pursued by Algar, prince of Leicester, for her hand in marriage. She refused his frequent approaches which became more and more desperate. Frideswide and her ladies, forewarned miraculously of yet another attempt by Algar, fled up river to hide. She stayed away some years, settling at Binsey, where she performed healing miracles. On returning to Oxford, Frideswide found that Algar was as persistent as ever, laying siege to the town in order to capture his bride. Frideswide called down blindness on Algar who eventually repented of his ways, and left Frideswide to her devotions. Frideswide died in about 737, and was canonised in 1480. Long before this, though, pilgrims came to her shrine in the priory church which was now populated by Augustinian canons. Nothing remains of Frideswide’s nunnery, and little - just a few stones - of the Saxon church but the cathedral and the buildings around the cloister are the oldest on the site. Her story is pictured in cartoon form by Burne-Jones in one of the windows in the cathedral. One of the gifts made to the priory was the meadow between Christ Church and the Thames and Cherwell rivers; Lady Montacute gave the land to maintain her chantry which lay in the Lady Chapel close to St Frideswide’s shrine. -

My dissertation examines the literary manifestation of Stoicism’s legacy, in particular regarding the institution and danger of autonomy, the foundation and limitation of virtue, the nature of the passions, the difference between good and evil, and the referentiality of language. Alongside the standard satirical responses to the ancient creed’s rigor and rationalism, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century poetry, drama, and prose developed Stoic formulations that made the most demanding of philosophical ideals tenable within the framework of common experience. Instead of serving as hallmarks for hypocrisy, the literary stoics I investigate uphold a brand of stoicism fit for the post-regicidal, post- Protestant Reformation, post-scientific revolutionary world. My project reveals how writers used Stoicism to determine the viability of philosophical precept and establish ways of compensating for human fallibility. The ambivalent status of the Stoic sage, staged and restaged in countless texts, exemplified the period’s anxiety about measuring up to its ideals, its efforts to discover the plenitude of ii natural laws and to live by them. -

‘A TREASURE OF CHRISTIAN DEVOTION’: THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER AND DOMESTIC PIETY IN GEORGIAN ENGLAND Andrew Braddock Introduction Georgian England saw the golden age of The Book of Common Prayer. In the words of Jeremy Gregory, this was a period during which the Prayer Book ‘shaped English religious and social life in ways which it had not done before and has not done since’.1 Far more than simply a book of services, its familiar words marked key moments in people’s lives as they brought their children to be baptised, exchanged their marriage vows, or buried their dead. The Prayer Book was the touchstone of the Church’s doctrine and, in its Catechism, provided instruction in the Christian faith. It offered spiritual counsel for the sick, the penitent and the dying, and through its prayers and rubrics reminded the whole community of their duties to God and one other. In addition, as Jonathan Clark seminal work English Society 1660-1832 highlighted, the close relationship between the monarchy, the aristocracy and the Church of England meant that the political establishment was an Anglican establishment in which fidelity to the Prayer Book was presented as a mark of political as well as religious loyalty.2 In exploring this period, historians have, unsurprisingly, been drawn to examining the Prayer Book’s defining role in public worship and to exploring the lively debates that surrounded eighteenth-century proposals for its revision.3 By contrast, far less attention has been given to the role of the Prayer Book in domestic devotion. A number of historians, including Norman Sykes, Charles Smyth, William Jacob, Jeremy Gregory, and William Gibson, have highlighted its use for family prayers. -

Ellison Published in Anglican and Episcopal History 77.3 (September 2008): 221-256 On Sunday 14 July 1833, John Keble, Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford,2 preached a sermon entitled “National Apostasy” in the Church of St Mary the Virgin, the primary venue for academic sermons, religious lectures, and other expressions of the university’s spiritual life. The sermon is remembered now largely because John Henry Newman, who was vicar of St Mary’s at the time,3 regarded it as the beginning of the Oxford Movement. Barrett Professor Emerita Marianne Kalinke ii ABSTRACT “Apostolic Discourse and Christian Identity in Anglo-Saxon Literature” argues that Anglo-Saxon religious writers used traditions about the apostles to inspire and interpret their peoples’ own missionary ambitions abroad, to represent England itself as a center of religious authority, and to articulate a particular conception of inspired authorship. This study traces the formation and adaptation of apostolic discourse (a shared but evolving language based on biblical and literary models) through a series of Latin and vernacular works including the letters of Boniface, the early vitae of the Anglo- Saxon missionary saints, the Old English poetry of Cynewulf, and the anonymous poem Andreas. This study demonstrates how Anglo-Saxon authors appropriated the experiences and the authority of the apostles to fashion Christian identities for members of the emerging English church in the seventh and eighth centuries, and for vernacular religious poets and their readers in the later Anglo-Saxon period. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am indebted to many people for their help and support throughout the duration of this dissertation project. -
