Moths of Poole Harbour is a project of Birds of Poole Harbour Moths of Poole Harbour Species List Birds of Poole Harbour & Moths of Poole Harbour recording area The Moths of Poole Harbour Project The ‘Moths of Poole Harbour’ project (MoPH) was established in 2017 to gain knowledge of moth species occurring in Poole Harbour, Dorset, their distribution, abundance and to some extent, their habitat requirements. The study area uses the same boundaries as the Birds of Poole Harbour (BoPH) project. Abigail Gibbs and Chris Thain, previous Wardens on Brownsea Island for Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT), were invited by BoPH to undertake a study of moths in the Poole Harbour recording area. This is an area of some 175 square kilometres stretching from Corfe Castle in the south to Canford Heath in the north of the conurbation and west as far as Wareham. 4 moth traps were purchased for the project; 3 Mercury Vapour (MV) Robinson traps with 50m extension cables and one Actinic, Ultra-violet (UV) portable Heath trap running from a rechargeable battery. This was the capability that was deployed on most of the ensuing 327 nights of trapping. Locations were selected using a number of criteria: Habitat, accessibility, existing knowledge (previously well-recorded sites were generally not included), potential for repeat visits, site security and potential for public engagement. Field work commenced from late July 2017 and continued until October. Generally, in the years 2018 – 2020 trapping field work began in March/ April and ran on until late October or early November, stopping at the first frost. -

Email: [email protected] The apparent scarcity of many leafmining moths in East Yorkshire (see Sutton & Beaumont, 1989) is at least partly due to a lack of recorder effort, and a number of previously presumed scarce or rare moths are actually relatively widespread (Chesmore, 2008; Nunn, 2015). One of the aims of a previous article (Nunn, op. cit.) was, hopefully, to encourage searches for leafminers in an attempt to redress the imbalance of records in Yorkshire. This article summarises our 'leafminering' highlights from 2015. A number of sites in VC61 were searched for leafmining moths (Table 1). Sampling effort varied considerably between sites. AN’s ‘leafminering’ opportunities were mostly restricted to casual observations while on family outings; BW’s focussed on sites that could be reached using public transport. The most time was spent in the Hessle area and a productive site in Hull. In October, the authors joined Charlie Fletcher and Ian Marshall for a day in an under- recorded 10km square, concentrating on the Settrington area. Arthropod fauna of the UAE, 3: 492–514 Date of publication: 31.03.2010 Order Lepidoptera, family Nepticulidae Erik J. van Nieukerken INTRODUCTION The Nepticulidae are a family of about 800 named species of very small moths (wingspan less than 10 mm), of which the larvae make leaf-mines, stem-mines or rarely galls. The family is poorly known from the desert regions in Northern Africa and the Middle East, but relatively well known from Central Asian deserts (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia), thanks to the work of R. Puplesis and students (summarised in Puplesis, 1994). The family was previously hardly known from the Arabian Peninsula, except for four species, recently described from northern Oman (Puplesis & Diškus, 2003). Here the family is recorded for the first time from the UAE, with seven species, two in Stigmella Schrank, 1802, and five in Acalyptris Meyrick, 1921, of which one is described as new. Except for S. birgittae Gustafsson, 1985, these species are also new for the Arabian Peninsula. Because some of the recorded species are actually rather common and widespread in the desert regions of North Africa and Asia, but virtually unknown in the literature, several unpublished records and synonymies of these species are presented here and they are redescribed. In this way the family Nepticulidae is not only recorded for the first time from the UAE, but also from Libya, Sudan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Stigmella omani Puplesis & Diškus, 2003, is synonymised with S. birgittae Gustafsson, 1985, S. ziziphivora Gustafsson, 1985, is synonymised with S. zizyphi Walsingham, 1911. 1 OHBR Annotated Checklist: Butterflies & Moths Outer Hebrides Annotated Checklist: Butterflies & Moths Over 2500 species have been recorded in the British Isles and so far, 552 moths and 17 butterflies appear in the Outer Hebrides checklist. This is not a definitive list; it does not include species recorded in literature or in museum collections, and although moths and butterflies are well documented in comparison with other insects, we are still adding new species to the list. This annotated version of the checklist has been created for biological recorders to provide additional information on the status and recorded flight times of the species within the islands. Species which are flagged in red require care in their identification and additional information may be required from the recorder if the record is submitted to OHBR. If you record a species not currently listed, and submit your record to OHBR you will be requested to supply further information on how the species was identified to enable us to verify the record. E-mail: [email protected] *Corresponding author Abstract Over the few couple of decades, the Nepticulidae of East Asia have been the subject of continuing investigation. Male genitalia of the nepticulid species described from Primorskiy Kray (the Russian Far East) were re-examined in the preced- ing paper in this journal. The present paper continues our study on the diversity and systematics of the Nepticulidae of East Asia based on a sample of specimens collected in 1974–1990 at various sites of the southern part of Primorskiy Kray and treats 35 species: two new taxa (Ectoedemia ortiva sp. nov. and E. species 219) and 33 other species. Seventeen of them are briefly discussed and illustrated with photographs of male genitalia. Two new synonyms are proposed, and three new distribution records are provided. We also provide an updated checklist of the Nepticulidae of East Asia, which com- prises 105 species; 67 species occur in the Russian Far East and 53 in Japan (20 of which occur both in Japan and Russia). -

The objectives of the Society are to further the cause of Natural History, to study, record and help preserve Rutland’s wildlife in particular, to meet and exchange information with other bodies, and to encourage people to take an interest in wildlife and its conservation. A Taxonomic List of Nepticulidae (Lepidoptera) Recorded in the Šalčininkai District, a Hitherto Largely Unstudied Area in Southeastern Lithuania

E-mail: [email protected] Introduction Nepticulidae (or pygmy moths) are known as very specialized Lepidoptera: their larvae live inside green tissues of plants and are predominantly monophagous, though some of them are oligophagous (Diškus & Stonis, 2012). The first general review of the Lithuanian fauna by A. Diškus was published as a chapter in a monograph by Puplesis & Diškus (2003), and it was followed by an amply illustrated monograph by Diškus & Stonis (2012) and a doctoral thesis by Asta Navickaitė (Navickaitė et al., 2014). Although, from a geographical point of view, all the above-mentioned publications covered almost the entire territory of Lithuania, some areas, notably the southeastern region, including the Šalčininkai District, were largely neglected because of insufficient studies and lack of material. In 2011–2013 some Nepticulidae research was done in the Šalčininkai District by the bachelor student A. Bobnis, who recorded 35 Nepticulidae species (Bobnis, unpublished). Our recent leaf-mine collecting in the Šalčininkai District (2015–2018) resulted in the discovery of additional 23 species (in total, 58 species) and the first review of the Nepticulidae fauna of this previously largely -

Konstytucji 3 Maja 1/3, 96-100 Skierniewice e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT During years 2010-2012 on organic plantations of wild rose (Rosa canina) located in Pojezierze Pomorskie region were found 8 species of moths associated with plants of Rosaceae family: Peribatodes rhomboidaria, Orgyia antiqua, Orthosia gracilis, O. incerta, Phalera bucephala, Psyche costa, Stigmella anomalella and Hedya ochroleucana. In this period on organic plantations of Japanese rose (Rosa rugosa) located in Wzgórze Trzebnickie and Sudety Wschodnie regions were recorded 14 moth species: Operophthera brumata, Peribatodes rhomboidaria, Malacosoma neustria, Lymantria dispar, Orgyia antiqua, Orthosia incerta, Ancylis achatana, Archips rosana, Celypha lacunana, Exapate congelatella, Hedya ochroleucana, Notocelia roborana, Pandemis heparana and Cnaemidophorus rhododactyla. The caterpillars of last species were the most dangerous, because their feeding on fruit. On organic plantations of roses were also collected 15 moth species associated with wild plants. Nasadze- nia róży dzikiej (Rosa canina) zlokalizowane są w części północnej Pol- ski i zajmują powierzchnię, każda około 50 ha, a plantacje róży pomarsz- czonej (R. rugosa) założone są na południu Polski i zajmują powierzch- nię, każda około 100 ha.
