  • Lois Mcmaster Bujold June 2018
Science Fiction Book Club Interview with Lois McMaster Bujold June 2018 It's been over 30 years since the epic, bestselling Vorkosigan Saga launched with “Shards of Honor,” and author Lois McMaster Bujold continues to mine new depths for the characters and settings in her rich science fiction universe. Set approximately 1,000 years in the future in a system of fictional planets (and occasionally on Earth), the series follows Miles Vorkosigan, a man as gifted in military tactics and interplanetary politics as he is at stumbling into trouble. Beyond the Vorkosigan Saga, Bujold has written books in the Chalion series and The Sharing Knife series. Known for her wit, warmth, and operatic, action-packed plots, Bujold has won the Hugo Award for Best Novel four times, the Hugo Award for Best Novella, and three Nebula Awards. Jo Zebedee: How integral are the short works to the Vorkosigan universe? LMB: As integral as any of the novels, in my opinion. (Well, maybe excepting “Weatherman”, which is an out-take from the novel The Vor Game, and thus double-dipping.) The reader may pick up three of the (currently) six in one package in the collection Borders of Infinity; the other two are still ala carte. Michael Rowe: Did you have an expectation on how we would view the Cetaganda Nobles and the Vor? (One more agreeable one less so?) LMB: The Vor are an ordinary sort of aristocracy, so that will depend on how one feels about aristocracies. The Cetagandans have a two-tier system, of which the upper level, the haut, turn out to be an ongoing genetics project aiming at creating post-humans.

Love the Vorkosigan SagaBy Frank C.Love the Vorkosigan Saga! I haven't enjoyed a book series this much since Heinlein's "Future Histories" stories. While do I enjoy some of Bujold's other work (like the Sharing Knife series), it pales in comparison to the escapades of the Vorkosigan family (specifically one Miles Naismith Vorkosigan). The stories in this series read like an action/adventure blockbuster movie (a la "Top Gun", and this story is no exception.I highly recommend this book, as well as all the rest of the books in this series. Almost as entertaining as Miles' antics is watching the desperate attempts of his friends and family to save him from himself, while simultaneously trying to stay outside his blast radius.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Worth every penney !By marie aBujold is the master of universe building (no pun intended). The Vor world is rich and complex yet easy to follow. I was hooked decades ago with MOUNTAINS OF MOURNING.

  • SPECULATIVE FICTION REVIEW by Stephanie Young TITLE the Vor
SPECULATIVE FICTION REVIEW by Stephanie Young TITLE The Vor Game AUTHOR Lois McMaster Bujold PUBLISHER Baen COPYRIGHT 1990 PRINTING 1990 COVER ART Tom Kidd I can hear you now - where's the Précis, the format etc?. Good. That means you actually have read some of my previous reviews. Why the change? After doing these reviews for over a year now, I decided the old format was a little restrictive and since I have received no feedback about the format, I decided to stir it up a bit. You can let me know via email if you don’t like the change or if you do like the change. I may go back to the old style, only time will tell. Now for the review. This is the fourth in the chronological order of the Vorkosigan saga although Borders of Infinity has a story that actually occurs just before this. In Vor Game, Miles gets his first assignment and it is not one he was hoping for. Kyril Island is similar to Greenland; ice packed, cold and dismal. He is to be the new weatherman on this outpost in the middle of nowhere. Miles being Miles, immediately gets into trouble as only he can, leading with his tongue. He especially gets the ire of his commander, General Metzov, when he sinks a scat-cat into the mud and almost kills himself in the process. This is compounded by his taking the wrong side in a standoff that ends up preventing a massacre of techs by Metzov. As a result, Miles is whisked away from Kyril Island, Metzov is dishonorably discharged, and Miles ends up in a weird house arrest in the ImpSec building.

Penric is in trouble, but what else is new? He's running from a situation that looked likely to kill him, albeit slowly, only to run into a new situation that looks likely to kill him quickly. He must rescue himself, rescue a blinded general and his sister, and even rescue another sorcerer from Being Stupid With a Demon. All the while running for his life, of course. There is a momentary pause...And then it stops! Yes, I knew it was short when I bought it, but I can still long for more.Sigh. But I'll be happy with what I have. For now.12 of 12 people found the following review helpful.

  • Red Roots, Radical Fruit : Children of the Old Left in the Civil Rights
RED ROOTS, RADICAL FRUIT: CHILDREN OF THE OLD LEFT IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AND THE NEW LEFT By Elise McCurties A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY History 2011 ABSTRACT RED ROOTS, RADICAL FRUIT: CHILDREN OF THE OLD LEFT IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AND THE NEW LEFT By Elise McCurties Children of the Old Left were leading participants in the Civil Rights Movement and the New Left. During their childhood these individuals often participated in their parents’ political activities and many developed their own organizations to support Old Left causes. Like their parents, young leftists were persecuted for their activism during the McCarthy period. Red Diaper Babies (RDBs), children raised by parents associated with the Communist movement, and their peers from other Old Left organizations were followed by FBI agents, attacked on the playground, and harassed in the classroom. When these young activists entered college in the Sixties, they helped start or joined social movements that supported these Old Left values learned during childhood. These radical youth were instrumental in starting some of the major protest organizations of the decade, most notably Students for a Democratic Society, the Free Speech Movement, and later the Weathermen. In addition to their participation in the New Left, radicals participated at all levels of the Civil Rights Movement in the North and the South. As a result of their childhood experiences, these young activists differed significantly from other white non-leftist volunteers and their experiences help expand historians’ understand of white activism during the Civil Rights Movement.

Minor Bujold is still better than mostBy Royce DaySummary: Penric, a young, very much lower lording, is on his way to be dutifully married when his wedding day is turned upside down. Finding a dying sorceress of the Bastard's Order by the side of the road, he's unexpectedly infested with the demon she carried when she passes. So the wedding is off, Penric has a demon carrying the lives of ten women (plus a lioness and a mare) in his head, and he's got a very uncertain future ahead of him.Well, at least his no-longer-bride-to- be gave him a nice cheese wheel as a going away present.Review: I think the best way to describe this story is "Amiable". It's a self-published novella that Lois points out is the longest she's written, but it's got less *plot* than say "Borders of Infinity", "The Mountains of Mourning" or "Labyrinth". It's actually a sly commentary about the two halves that make up a marriage (it's no coincidence Pen got his demon on his supposed wedding day), not a great pile of storm and thunder.
