SWITCH DOMINATES LA BREA FEATURE PRESENTATION • GI Malibu Stakes Switch (Quiet American), coming off a runner-up effort in the GI Breeders= Cup F/M Sprint, cut the corner turning for home and sailed clear to a four-length vic- tory in Sunday=s GI La Brea S. at Santa Anita. The three-year-old filly covered the seven furlongs in a spar- kling 1:20.33 over a new dirt track that was produc- ing fast times all day. Switch raced just off the TWIRLING CANDY MAKES IT A SADLER SWEEP early pacesetters, while Twirling Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}) outgamed Smiling skimming the rail. She Tiger (Hold That Tiger) to the wire for a track-record moved to challenge with an Switch M Marten setting victory in yesterday=s GI Malibu S., giving trainer inside move turning for John Sadler and jockey Joel Rosario a clean sweep of home and quickly spurted clear in upper stretch for an the three graded stakes on Santa Anita=s opening-day authoritative score. The inside trip was never a concern card. Earlier on the pro- for assistant Larry Benavidez, deputizing for trainer gram, Sadler sent out John Sadler, who was sidelined by a Abum knee.@ AShe Switch (Quiet Ameri- kind of had the same trip she had in the Breeders= Cup, can) to victory in the right behind the speed,@ Benavidez said. AShe=s a pro. GI La Brea S., and She=ll go inside, outside, it doesn=t matter. That was stablemate Sidney=s pretty impressive, huh?@ Winning rider Joel Rosario was Candy (Candy Ride happy with the new Santa Anita surface. AThe track {Arg}) went wire-to- feels pretty good,@ Rosario said. AIt=s a little faster, but I wire in the GIII Sir Beau- don=t think it=s an issue.@ fort S. Smiling Tiger took over in upper stretch, but Twirling Candy loomed a threat to his outside, and the pair battled down to the line with Twirling Candy just getting the better of that foe in the final jump. Sadler missed his big day with an injured knee, but assistant trainer Larry Benavidez cred- ited his boss with strategic pre-race works for his three stakes winners. AJohn made a million-dollar move on Thursday by sending the three horses to Hollywood Park to breeze them,@ Benavidez said. AThat might have helped in the cause. But we have three Grade I horses, so we were pretty confident going into today.@ The lightly raced Twirling Candy, a J “TDN Rising Star” J, opened his career with four straight victories, culmi- nating with a 3 1/4-length tally in the Sept. 5 GII Del Mar Derby. He suffered the first loss of his career last time out when tiring to fourth in the Oct. 2 GI Good- wood S. at Hollywood. Testimony of Marty Irby Executive Director Animal Wellness Action before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Commerce and Consumer Protection H.R. 1754, "The Horseracing Integrity Act" January 28, 2020 On behalf of Animal Wellness Action, one of the nation's leading animal protection organizations on Capitol Hill, I submit this testimony in support of H.R. 1754, the Horseracing Integrity Act. I express my sincere thanks to Chair Jan Schakowsky and Ranking Member Cathy McMorris Rodgers for conducting this hearing and offer special thanks to Representatives Paul Tonko, and, Andy Barr for introducing this reform effort. I also express thanks to Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Frank Pallone and Ranking Member Greg Walden for their participation in this process. This hearing builds on the testimony and other information gathered during the 2018 hearing conducted before the Subcommittee on H.R. 2651 in the 115th Congress. I first want to underscore that Animal Wellness Action does not oppose horseracing. We join with many horse owners, breeders, trainers, and racing enthusiasts in speaking out on the broader topic of the protection of horses within the American horseracing industry and across the greater equine world. We seek to promote the proper stewardship of horses at every stage of their lives, including during their racing careers. We are deeply concerned about on- and off- track risks to the horses, including catastrophic injuries sustained during racing. America was built on the backs of horses, and they have always played a central role in the economy and culture of the United States. We owe them a debt of gratitude, and the very least we must do is ensure their safety, welfare, and protection.

  • Driven to Succeed
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8, 2020 DRIVEN TO SUCCEED PENNSYLVANIA BREEDING PROGRAM CONTINUES TO GROW By Bill Finley Bucking a nationwide trend, the number of mares bred in Pennsylvania in 2019 was 686, an increase of 12.5% over 2018. It was the third straight year that the number of horses bred in Pennsylvania has increased. Overall, the number of mares bred in 2019 in the U.S. declined by 3.5%. The growing popularity of the Pennsylvania program is a direct result of the establishment of the Racehorse Development Fund Trust in 2017. The trust guaranteed that the government could no longer raid the Horse Racing Development Fund, which funneled slot machine revenues into a fund that supported breeding and racing in the state.
