Below are trends we have identified looking at the overall fundraising market and our predictions of what we expect to see in the market over the next 12 months. What trends are we seeing?

Value Up … & Down Growth in number of fundraisers has been fastest for shorter distances (10k and below), but these events have also seen sharp declines in the average value of their fundraising pages. For some events this decline has been more than 25%. Longer distance events such as , have seen much slower growth in the numbers of fundraisers but buck the trend by increasing the average value of their fundraising pages.

Slow and Steady Across the whole market we have seen a bigger increase in the number of fundraising pages set up in 2018 (up by 6%) compared to the previous 12 months. Disappointingly, however we have seen a fall in the overall average value of these pages. The charities we worked with have reported mixed performances with the top 25 events growing quickly, a contrast to the rest of the fundraising market which isn’t.

MOB events down and out? There has been a steep decline in the number of people fundraising through MOB events last year. This marks the 3rd consecutive year we’ve seen a decline in numbers of MOB fundraisers and while Tough Mudder has featured many events in our table of the biggest sports events for fundraising in the past, this year there are none. Our sense is that after a meteoric rise in the popularity of these events for fundraising the market is settling down and as a result, MOB events’ best years as significant fundraisers may have passed.

*Our definition of mass participation sports events includes only events based around physical activities and those which are open to any charity, so excludes all events owned or associated with a single or small groups of charities e.g. Race for Life or Moonwalk. Fundraising data is based on figures supplied by our data partner justcharity.org who provide data from the UK’s major fundraising platforms. We have considered only UK fundraising for named events based only on pages that received their first donation and last donation between January 1st 2017 & April 1st 2019. No considera- tion has been made for commercial donations, shared income, grants or similar payments made by events, their organisers or sponsors to charity partners. Whilst we have made every effort to ensure data is as accurate as possible we make no guarantee on any of the figures included in this report.
