  • Review of Henning Schmidgen, Bruno Latour in Pieces: an Intellectual Biography
ISSN 1918-7351 Volume 10 (2018) Review of Henning Schmidgen, Bruno Latour in Pieces: An Intellectual Biography. Translated by Gloria Custance. New York: Fordham University Press, 2014. xvi + 175 pages. Bruno Latour in Pieces (BLP) offers a brief but extensive introduction to Latour’s education, career, collaborations, and collaborators. BLP is Latourean in its insistence on pointing to the “ego, hic, nunc” (17). By following Latour’s method of indexing, of pointing to people, places, and times, Schmidgen aptly follows Latour. Like any biography worth its salt, Schmidgen’s research follows the influences that played a role in transforming Latour into the thinker he is, but also plays it close to the ear by not only articulating the bibliographical information, but in attempting a genealogy of Latourian philosophy. Schmidgen reveals the sources of a rearticulation of many key Science and Technology Studies themes in relationships developed in biblical hermeneutics through his ethnography of the Guillemin’s Laboratory. BLP is after all an “intellectual biography,” so it is hardly surprising that Schmidgen attempts what his project plainly sets out to do. But, what is pleasantly surprising is the interconnected mosaic generated in graphing historical bibliographical details onto Latour’s intellectual development. The imagine of Latourian studies is circulated, and in turn transformed (there is no circulation, no translation, without transformation), but what is up for debate is whether these transformations are felicitous in maintaining the relationships that make them possible. A key insight that Schmidgen brings to light in BLP is the influence that André Malet, Rudolf Bultmann, and Charles Péguy had on Latour.

  • The Routledge Companion to Actor-Network Theory
The Routledge Companion to Actor-Network Theory This companion explores ANT as an intellectual practice, tracking its movements and engagements with a wide range of other academic and activist projects. Showcasing the work of a diverse set of ‘second generation’ ANT scholars from around the world, it highlights the exciting depth and breadth of contemporary ANT and its future possibilities. The companion has 38 chapters, each answering a key question about ANT and its capacities. Early chapters explore ANT as an intellectual practice and highlight ANT’s dialogues with other fields and key theorists. Others open critical, provocative discussions of its limitations. Later sections explore how ANT has been developed in a range of so cial scientific fields and how it has been used to explore a wide range of scales and sites. Chapters in the final section discuss ANT’s involvement in ‘real world’ endeavours such as disability and environmental activism, and even running a Chilean hospital. Each chapter contains an overview of relevant work and introduces original examples and ideas from the authors’ recent research. The chapters orient readers in rich, complex fields and can be read in any order or combination. Throughout the volume, authors mobilise ANT to explore and account for a range of exciting case studies: from wheelchair activism to parliamentary decision-making; from racial profiling to energy consumption monitoring; from queer sex to Korean cities. A comprehensive introduction by the editors explores the significance of ANT more broadly and provides an overview of the volume. The Routledge Companion to Actor-Network Theory will be an inspiring and lively companion to aca- demics and advanced undergraduates and postgraduates from across many disciplines across the social sciences, including Sociology, Geography, Politics and Urban Studies, Environmental Studies and STS, and anyone wishing to engage with ANT, to understand what it has already been used to do and to imagine what it might do in the future.

Translating the Translators: Following the Development of Actor-Network Theory Susanna Evarts First Reader: Cornel Ban, PhD, JD Second Reader: Gianpaolo Baiocchi, PhD Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of BACHELOR OF ARTS in DEVELOPMENT STUDIES Development Studies Brown University April 15, 2011 __________________________________ SUSANNA EVARTS __________________________________ Cornel Ban, PhD, JD __________________________________ Gianpaolo Baiocchi, PhD © Susanna Evarts, 2011 Abstract In this thesis, I will trace the development and spread of Actor-Network Theory (ANT), which emerged as a way of studying technological change and innovation in the early 1980s and was conceived of by three main theorists: Bruno Latour, Michel Callon, and John Law. Since then, however, it has evolved and been used in many disciplines, which has fundamentally changed to what and how it is employed. There have been few previous studies that examine its spread using empirical methods, and the ones that do, only focus on one particular sub-discipline. As such, little is actually known about how ANT moved from its initial birthplace in Europe to become one of the most influential approaches in Science and Technology Studies (STS). Additionally, while ANT first started in Europe, it is cited most in the United States, a phenomenon that has also eluded previous research. This study is important to the field of Development Studies, as both are inherently interdisciplinary approaches to studying a heterogeneous mix of entities. Additionally, ANT has much to offer Development Studies research; in particular ANT’s reconceptualization of how power becomes enacted, which forces the researcher to avoid short cuts in explaining inequalities and identities is quite relevant to development research.

    C. Gad, C. B. Jensen & B. R. Winthereik. Practical Ontology. Practical Ontology Worlds in STS and Anthropology1 Christopher Gad IT University of Copenhagen Casper Bruun Jensen University of Leicester Brit Ross Winthereik IT University of Copenhagen An Ambitious Question The following considerations are written in response to a debate among Danish anthropologists concerning the ontological question—whether we inhabit multiple worlds. On the one hand, as we argue below, this is an interesting and ethnographically consequential question. On the other hand, it is also a peculiar question, since it seems impossible to answer. It appears metaphysical, an issue that can be determined neither theoretically nor empirically. Thus, our response does not aim to ‘answer’ the question ‘Do we inhabit multiple worlds?’ either negatively or in the affirmative. Instead, we argue for the importance of (ethnographically and anthropologically) living with its undecideability. Between 1910 and 1913, Alfred North Whitehead and Bertrand Russell published Principia Mathematica. Based on the assumption that there is one singular mathematical world, their aspiration was to define the principles that 1 We are grateful to Antonia C. These stated, first, that a formal system cannot simultaneously be consistent and complete, and, second, that no system can prove its own consistency (Gödel 1962).

Article History of the Human Sciences 26(1) 3–28 The materiality of things? ª The Author(s) 2012 Reprints and permission: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav Bruno Latour, Charles DOI: 10.1177/0952695112461736 Pe´guy and the history of hhs.sagepub.com science Henning Schmidgen Universita¨t Regensburg, Germany Abstract This article sheds new light on Bruno Latour’s sociology of science and technology by looking at his early study of the French writer, philosopher and editor Charles Pe´guy (1873–1914). In the early 1970s, Latour engaged in a comparative study of Pe´guy’s Clio and the four gospels of the New Testament. His 1973 contribution to a Pe´guy collo- quium (published in 1977) offers rich insights into his interest in questions of time, history, tradition and translation. Inspired by Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy of difference, Latour reads Clio as spelling out and illustrating the following argument: ‘Repetition is a machine to produce differences with identity’. However, in contrast to Deleuze’s work (together with Fe´lix Guattari) on the materiality of machines, or assemblages [agence- ments], Latour emphasizes the semiotic aspects of the repetition/difference process. As in Pe´guy, the main model for this process is the Roman Catholic tradition of religious events. The article argues that it is this reading of Pe´guy and Latour’s early interest in biblical exegesis that inspired much of Latour’s later work. In Laboratory Life (Latour and Woolgar, 1979) and The Pasteurization of France (1988) in particular, problems of exegesis and tradition provide important stimuli for the analysis of scientific texts.
