ABSTRACT CATES, MADISON WARD. “White Men Without Side-Arms:” Moderation, Manhood, and the Politics of Civil Rights in North Carolina, 1960-1965. (Under the direction of Dr. Katherine Mellen Charron). Much of the existing historiography on the Civil Rights Movement in North Carolina either focuses on grassroots activists at the community level or on debates about whether the state’s white citizens exhibited “progressive” views on race or not. This study seeks to bridge this gap by examining the relationships and political struggles between African American activists, white moderates, and arch-segregationists at the state level from 1960 to 1965. Throughout, broader ideas about gender, race, religion, and democracy are analyzed in order to move beyond oversimplified narratives that accentuate the bold, progressive outlooks of white moderates, reduce their segregationist opponents to caricatures, and diminish the role that African Americans played in challenging white political dominance. In particular, this paper explores how African-Americans leveraged the state’s “progressive mystique” to obtain greater concessions from white moderate politicians, especially Governor Terry Sanford. Yet, white moderates also confronted strident objections to any change from white supremacists. In order to mollify the demands of both groups, Sanford’s leadership exemplified a temperate realpolitik that opposed direct action campaigns and promoted racial harmony, quality public education, and robust economic development. It also reflected the ways in which events forced him to do in gendered terms. When black activists filled the streets and public facilities of North Carolina employing non-violent direct action as consistent with their dignity as men and citizens, Sanford and other white moderates responded by recasting southern manhood on ideas of law and order and Christian brotherhood. -

African American Educational Activism in Charlotte, North Carolina, 1961-1974
ABSTRACT BUNDY, LAUREN TESS. A Community Worth Fighting For: African American Educational Activism in Charlotte, North Carolina, 1961-1974. (Under the direction of Dr. Blair Kelley.) This thesis will explore the traditions of African American educational activism in Charlotte, North Carolina between 1961 and 1974. During this time period, African Americans representing nearly every sector of the community relied on a flexible model of activism in their fight for schools which respected their educational traditions. Throughout this time period African Americans, with the help of some white Charlotteans, voiced their discontent with the status quo of public education which marginalized African American children and maintained the economic, political, and social control of a handful of white city fathers. Moreover, African Americans rejected school desegregation plans created by the all-white Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board, which inflicted heavy blows on the black community and their educational and community institutions. Throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, white school officials regularly created integration and reform plans which closed historically black schools, fired black educators, and placed an undue burden on black students and their families. Schools represented a rare space of reprieve, empowerment, and opportunity in the bleak landscape of the Jim Crow South. Despite the enormous financial discrepancies between white and black schools, black communities came together to provide their students with an educational experience which met their intellectual and social needs. Desegregation plans that threatened these treasured community resources were met with fierce opposition from African Americans not just in Charlotte, but across much of the nation. ABSTRACT EMERSON, DIANE EUGENIA. Education to Subordinate-Education to Liberate. An Historical Study of the Dual Role of Education for African Americans, 1865-1968. (Dr. Anna Victoria Wilson, Chairperson) This research is an historical study of African Americans’ experience acquiring education in North Carolina. In particular, I examine the ideological and institutional factors that shaped public education for African Americans following the Emancipation Act in 1865. Primary data includes an oral history of the experiences of teachers and students at Williston High School in Wilmington, North Carolina. Oral history serves as the principal vehicle for understanding Williston High School as a segregated learning institution along with document analysis of personal and public records. Williston High School was the sole secondary school for African American students in Wilmington, North Carolina, from 1919 until 1968. Founded in 1866, Williston was the first free school for African American students in the southern part of Wilmington. Local African American citizens raised their own funds to start the school. Desegregation forced the school to close in 1968. A brief history of African Americans in Wilmington, North Carolina, during the Reconstruction era contributes to understanding the local African American community’s efforts to maintain and enhance its only high school despite blatant acts of racism. Integrating Blood Done Sign My Name into Social Studies Overview Blood Done Sign My Name, by Tim Tyson, examines the history of the civil rights struggle in the South. The book focuses on the murder of a young black man, Henry Marrow, in 1970, a tragedy that dramatically widened the racial gap in the author's hometown of Oxford, N.C. Tyson portrays the killing and its aftermath from multiple perspectives while interweaving the history of race relations in the South.
