With over 15 years experience in the industry, Jason previously worked as an Environmental Officer for Kempsey Shire Council and later alongside pioneer ecological consultants, Dr David Bray and Kel Mackay, before founding Darkheart in 1997. Services ECOLOGICAL SURVEYS Darkheart is renowned throughout the industry for outstanding results in ecological surveys. By providing comprehensive and specialist surveys, we can provide the most credible, robust and scientific information essential to impact assessment. Our highly experienced and broadly skilled team has extensive knowledge of threatened species and ecological communities within the region, and is capable of performing all aspects of aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna survey. Green-Thighed Frog Darkheart undertakes all ecological surveys and assessment according to the following general guidelines: • Survey Guidelines For Australia’s Threatened Birds , Non-Flying Mammals, Fish, Reptiles and Frogs (DSEWPC 2009-2010), • Threatened Species Survey and Assessment – Guidelines for Developments and Activities (DEC 2004, 2009) • Guidelines for Assessment in Aquatic Ecology in EIA (Lincoln-Smith 2008) Where applicable, we also undertake survey and assessment to any additional guidelines (eg. Greater Taree Council Draft Flora and Fauna Survey Guidelines). Darkheart is regularly engaged by private and government clients to review and critique other ecological reports to assess: • Compliance to recognised survey and assessment standards and guidelines. • Professional application of scientific principles. • Scientific validity of methods, results and conclusions (eg requirement for a Species Impact Statement). Where errors, oversights and discrepancies are uncovered, we can assist with amendments to proposals and supplementary statutory assessments. Darkheart also provides expert testimony in the Land and Environment Court on behalf of government agencies and private developers to defend their position. Darkheart is also regularly engaged by regulatory authorities to investigate breaches of legislation (eg illegal clearing), and to qualify and quantify the infringement to be incorporated into legal proceedings and restoration orders. GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS MAPPING AND ANALYSIS Darkheart has the latest geographic information system software (ArcGIS). We can digitise and geo-reference existing maps, plans and aerial photographs, and collect additional data using GPS in the field. Darkheart can also arrange the purchase and licensing of data from government departments and private suppliers for analysis and map production. We can produce detailed thematic maps providing a powerful tool for the visualisation of complex data, assisting in highlighting key information for projects. Our GIS capabilities often form an an integral component of many projects. Our spatial analysis and mapping capabilities include: • GPS data collection in the field. • Digitising and geo-referencing of existing maps, plans and aerial photographs. • Interpretation of aerial photography and satellite imagery. • Thematic mapping including species distribution, vegetation, key habitats and conservation value, as well as ecological constraints and development layouts.
