Water is a precious resource in the Australian deserts, so watering holes like this one near Georgetown are incredible places for concentrating wildlife. Two of our most bird diverse excursions were on our mornings in this region. Photo by guide Doug Gochfeld. Australia. A voyage to the land of Oz is guaranteed to be filled with novelty and wonder, regardless of whether we’ve been to the country previously. This was true for our group this year, with everyone coming away awed and excited by any number of a litany of great experiences, whether they had already been in the country for three weeks or were beginning their Aussie journey in Darwin. Given the far-flung locales we visit, this itinerary often provides the full spectrum of weather, and this year that was true to the extreme. The drought which had gripped much of Australia for months on end was still in full effect upon our arrival at Darwin in the steamy Top End, and Georgetown was equally hot, though about as dry as Darwin was humid. The warmth persisted along the Queensland coast in Cairns, while weather on the Atherton Tablelands and at Lamington National Park was mild and quite pleasant, a prelude to the pendulum swinging the other way. During our final hours below O’Reilly’s, a system came through bringing with it strong winds (and a brush fire warning that unfortunately turned out all too prescient).

Illegal wildlife trade is reportedly the fourth largest global illegal trade after narcotics, counterfeiting and human trafficking. It has evolved into an organized activity threatening the future of many wildlife species. TRAFFIC Post was born out of the need to reach out to various stakeholders including decision makers, enforcement officials, judiciary and consumers about the extent of illegal wildlife trade in India and the damaging effect it could be having on the endangered flora and fauna. Since its inception, TRAFFIC Post has highlighted pressing issues related to illegal wildlife trade in India and globally, flagged early trends, and illuminated wildlife policies and laws. It has also focused on the status of legal trade in various medicinal plant and timber species that need sustainable management for ensuring ecological and economic success. It is unique among psittaciformes in that it builds a stick nest rather than breeding in a cavity. These stick nests are often communal, with multiple pairs breeding in the same large stick structure.

We started the tour in Cairns in Far North Queensland, where we found ourselves surrounded by multiple habitats from the tidal mudflats of the Cairns Esplanade, the Great Barrier Reef and its sandy cays, lush lowland and highland rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands, and we even made it to the edge of the Outback near Mount Carbine; the next leg of the tour took us south to Southeast Queensland where we spent time in temperate rainforests and wet sclerophyll forests within Lamington National Park. The third, and my favorite leg, of the tour took us down to New South Wales, where we birded a huge variety of new habitats from coastal heathland to rocky shorelines and temperate rainforests in Royal National Park, to the mallee and brigalow of Inland New South Wales. The fourth and final leg of the tour saw us on the beautiful island state of Tasmania, where we found all 13 “Tassie” endemics. We had a huge list of highlights, from finding a roosting Lesser Sooty Owl in Malanda; to finding two roosting Powerful Owls near Brisbane; to having an Albert’s Lyrebird walk out in front of us at O Reilly’s; to seeing the rare and endangered Regent Honeyeaters in the Capertee Valley, and finding the endangered Swift Parrot on Bruny Island, in Tasmania.

    Western Field Ornithologists April 2020 Newsletter Message from WFO President Kurt Leuschner The coronavirus pandemic is now impacting society in serious and profound ways. Every day we learn more about this virus, its toll on society, and the habits we need to practice in order to minimize its spread. As you learned from our earlier message, the WFO board decided that we must postpone our annual conference that was set to be held in September in Reno. We did this to protect the health of our members and to protect WFO from a potentially significant financial loss. We’re very disheartened that we had to cancel what was to be our 50th anniversary celebration of the founding of Western Field Ornithologists. The venue was exciting, we were organizing wonderful field trips led by stellar leaders, speakers were on tap, and we looked forward to seeing old friends and the chance to make new ones. Our annual WFO conference is a signature annual accomplishment and we are fully aware of how important this yearly event is for everyone. WFO is both a scientific and a social organization. Interacting with one another and enjoying each other’s company is a key reason many of us are part of the WFO. This newsletter and others to follow are one way we can keep the WFO community engaged and further our mission even though we may not physically see many of you again until 2021. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the articles and updates, the artwork, the information on some of our board members, and the art and writings by several young scholars.

    Psittacid herpesviruses and mucosal papillomas of birds in Australia Fact sheet Introductory statement Psittacid herpesvirus-1 (PsHV-1) has not been reported in wild Australian parrots. Psittacid herpesviruses have been identified in captive green-winged macaws (Ara chloroptera) in Australia. The four genotypes of PsHV-1 are the etiologic agents of Pacheco’s disease (Tomaszewski et al. 2003). Pacheco’s disease is an acute rapidly fatal disease of parrots that has caused significant mortality events in captive parrot collections. Many species of Australian parrot are among those that are susceptible to PsHV-1 infection and disease (Phalen 2006). Subclinical infections result in birds that remain infected for life. These birds are then sources for future outbreaks (Tomaszewski et al. 2006). Parrots subclinically infected with PsHV-1 genotypes 1, 2 and 3 may develop mucosal papillomas (Styles et al. 2004; Styles 2005). Mucosal papillomas have been detected in green-winged macaws imported into Australia (Gallagher and Sullivan 1997; Roe 1997; Vogelnest et al. 2005 ) and they have been confirmed to contain PsHV-1 (Raidal et al. 1998; Vogelnest et al. 2005 ). Although there is no evidence of PsHV-1 in wild Australian parrots (Raidal et al. 1998), the establishment of PsHV-1 in Australia poses a significant risk to captive parrots and a potential risk to wild Australian parrots. Aetiology Family (Herpesviridae), subfamily (Alphaherpesvirinae) genus (Iltovirus). Natural hosts Psittacine birds (parrots) are both the natural host and the most susceptible to disease.
