HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

  • The Outkast Class
    R. Bradley OutKast Class Syllabus OutKast Course Description and Objectives Pre-requisite: ENGL1102 Preferred Pre-requisites: ENGL2300, AADS1102 In 1995, Atlanta, GA duo OutKast attended the Source Hip Hop Awards where they won the award for Best New Duo. Mostly attended by bi-coastal rappers and hip hop enthusiasts, OutKast was booed off the stage. OutKast member Andre Benjamin, clearly frustrated, emphatically declared what is now known as the rallying cry for young black southerners: “the south got something to say.” For this course, we will use OutKast’s body of work as a case study questioning how we recognize race and identity in the American south after the Civil Rights Movement. Using a variety of post-Civil Rights era texts including film, fiction, criticism, and music, students will interrogate OutKast’s music as the foundation of what the instructor theorizes as “the hip hop south,” the southern black social-cultural landscape in place over the last 25 years. Objectives 1. To develop and utilize a multidisciplinary critical framework to successfully engage with conversations revolving around contemporary identity politics and (southern) popular culture 2. To challenge students to engage with unfamiliar texts, cultural expressions, and language in order to learn how to be socially and culturally sensitive and aware of modes of expression outside of their own experiences. 3. To develop research and writing skills to create and/or improve one’s scholarly voice and others via the following assignments: • Critical Listening Journals • Creative or Critical Final Project **Explicit Content Statement (courtesy of Dr. Treva B. Lindsey)** Over the course of the semester students will Be introduced to texts that may Be explicit in nature (i.e.

  • Nile Rodgers in New York City, 1991
Nile Rodgers in New York City, 1991 68 MUSICAL EXCELLENCE Nile Rodgers HE CREATES A DISTINCTIVE SOUND ON THE RECORDS HE WRITES, PRODUCES, ARRANGES, AND PLAYS ON. BY ROB BOWMAN Nile Rodgers’ influence on popular music over the past forty years is nearly unfathomable. As a guitarist, songwriter, producer, arranger, and funkster extraordinaire, Rodgers has left his imprint on a stun- ningly wide array of genres including disco, R&B, rock, mainstream pop, hip-hop, and EDM. Looking over the breadth of his career, a case could easily be made that no single individual has had a greater impact on the sound of pop, from the late 1970s to the present day. ¶ Alongside his partner, bass player wunderkind Bernard Edwards, Rodgers wrote and produced hit after hit for Chic, Sister Sledge, and Diana Ross, tearing up both the dance floor and the radio. After Chic broke up and Rodgers and Edwards went their separate ways, Rodgers broke free of the disco moniker and reinvented himself, producing, arranging, and playing guitar on David Bowie’s come- back album, Let’s Dance (1983), and Madonna’s breakout album, 69 Like a Virgin (1984). Along the way he took INXS and Chic in their prime then Duran Duran to new heights with “Original Sin” with Rodgers and and “The Reflex,” respectively, and produced albums by Bernard Edwards Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, the B-52s, and David Lee Roth. center stage, 1979 He played key guitar parts on Steve Winwood’s “High- er Love” and Michael Jackson’s HIStory. More recent- ly he cowrote and played guitar on Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” winning two Grammy Awards in the process.

To speak about the spirituality of Kanye West, we first have to discuss the spirituality of the Black Man, because that is the identity he holds. It’ll also be valuable to explore, what the Negro spiritual is and the relationship between music that Black slaves used and how we see remnants of those origins in contemporary Hip Hop. Negro people held on to song as a means of communication, education, and religion. Though, I never considered the actual term “Negro Spiritual.” These songs held together the spirit of the Negro. These Negro Spirits outlined literal maps to freedom. The Black song is still very much so rooted in ideas of “freedom” and “God”. The slaves relied on song for the truth. The Negro slaves relied on the metaphor in those songs for strategy. We still see it. Many Black men often see themselves in the symbolism of God. God as a Father, God as a protector, God as someone to be worshipped. Each person learns and participates in spirituality differently; Black Boy be given song Song be sway and hymn Black boy be given song Even before God Black boy be given tick, and bang.

  • Hip-Hop Timeline 1973 – Kool Herc Deejays His First Party in the Bronx
Hip-hop Timeline ➢ 1973 – Kool Herc deejays his first party in the Bronx, where his blending of breaks is first exhibited. The break dancers in attendance began to discover their style and form. ➢ 1975 – Grandmaster Flash begins the early forms of Turntabilism by blending and mixing, while Grandwizard Theodore invents what we now know as scratching. The first Emcee crews are formed. ➢ 1979 – The Sugarhill Gang, under the guidance of record label owner and former vocalist Sylvia Robinson, release Rapper’s Delight, the first commercially recognized rap song. *There is much debate over the first recorded rap song, but it’s widely believed to have been done sometime in 1977 or 1978. ➢ 1980 – Kurtis Blow releases the first best selling hip-hop album, The Breaks, and becomes the first star in hip-hop music. ➢ 1983 – Herbie Hancock, in collaboration with pioneer DeeJay GrandMixer DST (now known as GrandMixer DXT), creates the Grammy Award-winning song Rockit, which is the first time the public ever hears a DeeJay scratching on record. Pioneer hip-hop duo Run DMC releases their first single Sucker Emcee’s. ➢ 1988 – This year is considered the first golden year in hip-hop music with releases such as Public Enemy’s It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Big Daddy Kane’s Long Live The Kane, Slick Rick’s The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, Boogie Down Production’s By All Means Necessary, Eric B And Rakim’s Follow the Leader and the first highly regarded non-New York hip-hop record, N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton.

  • Music Review Kanye West, Jesus Is King US 2019, Def Jam Recordings
Andre L. Price Music Review Kanye West, Jesus Is King US 2019, Def Jam Recordings As any emcee should, Kanye West has developed and matured as a produc- er and lyricist since his 2004 triple-platinum debut project, College Dropout. West’s Gospel project, Jesus Is King, is his ninth studio project and the fol- low-up to his June 2018 release, Ye. After delays, Jesus Is King was released on 25 October 2019. For West, openly talking about Jesus in his music is not new, for he rocked the mainstream hip-hop world in 2004 when he re- leased the single “Jesus Walks”, the final single to be released from College Dropout. Jesus Is King features eleven tracks totaling 27 minutes and 4 seconds, which is short for either a secular or gospel hip-hop project.1 Interestingly, significant changes were made to the track listing order on the album. Kim Kardashian-West announced the tracks and order in August 2019, but the list- ing and order released by Kanye West in October 2019 were markedly differ- ent.2 Such a change could suggest an earlier lack of clarity on what the album was going to be. West did promise that Jesus Is King would be “fully immersed in religion […] with lyrics about God, being saved, and minimal cursing”.3 Jesus Is King employs several aspects of Black Christian worship, from mass choir to melodic organ. West takes the best of the Black gospel tradition, in- fusing it with his own lyrical genius to proclaim what God has done for him, which is best expressed on the track “God Is”, a remake of the classic spiritual.
