MOVIE MOMENT by Matt McGraw ‘The Hurt Locker’ earns McGraw’s highest rating Nominated for nine Academy Awards including Best Picture, director Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker is a gripping, powerful tale of an American bomb squad in • Invitations Iraq. When the leader of the Bravo Company of the bomb • Napkins squad is killed by an explosion, a cocky, fearless rebel • Accessories named Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner) is sent in to take over. Immediately, James does not get along with • Programs his team (Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty), leading • Notes to some tense situations between the men as they try to dismantle bombs and survive their tour of duty. • Place Cards The film is incredibly well-made in all aspects. Kathryn Bigelow, the ex-wife of rival Best Director nominee James • Bookmarks Cameron (Avatar), has done a truly phenomenal job of • Gifts directing this film. She has taken on a completely male- dominated genre and defeated the boys at their own game, • Anniversary crafted easily the best film thus far about the Middle East conflict. The frontrunner to win the Oscar, the 58-year-old Bigelow is only the third woman ever to be nominated for the honor. Her job was made easier by gifted screenwriter Mark Boal, a veteran of the Iraq War who also wrote the 2007 film In the Valley of Elah. The film does not attempt to make a political statement of any sort, making it rather refreshing, though politically charged war films certainly have their place as well. For SFC James, war is a drug (a character states this at one point), and the movie neither advocates nor condemns this. The cast, composed largely of relative unknowns, is incredible. In the lead role, Best Actor nominee Renner gives one of the best performances of the year. Mackie (8 Mile) and Geraghty (Jarhead) are also excellent. Each of the men brings a distinct, interesting personality to their character, and as a result, the characters are most definite- ly not one-dimensional meathead stereotypes. The film features famed actors such as Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies), Guy Pearce (Memento), David Morse (The Green Mile), and Evangeline Lilly (TV’s Lost) in small roles, lending the spotlight more to the up-and-coming young actors. Jeremy Renner in particular likely has an extremely bright future. Overall, The Hurt Locker is an extremely intense and The County Record rewarding experience that is completely worthy of its Best Picture nomination. A blast of fresh air in a genre that has 20311 Central Ave. West grown stagnant over the past decade, it is one of the best Blountstown, FL war films in years, and certainly one of the most entertain- ing. Do yourself a favor and watch it. You will not regret it. 5/5 674-5041 Comments or questions?
