Cleveland Indians Place Andrew Miller on DL Cleveland Indians Place Andrew Miller On DL Author : David Levin Per Chad Thornburg of MLB.com, Indians reliever Andrew Miller was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring on Thursday. The contract of left-hander Jeff Beliveau was selected from Triple-A Columbus. Andrew Miller sustained the injury in the seventh inning of the Cleveland Indians 4-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. His outing lasted all of two pitches. There were two out with a runner on first base. After his second pitch to Chicago's Anthony Rizzo, he grimaced, grabbed the back of his hamstring and motioned toward the dugout. "With the DL being 10 days now, it just makes sense," Miller said. "I don't want to go on the DL. I don't think it's going to take 10 days. I'm more concerned with -- I already talked to [pitching coach Carl Willis] 1 / 2 about it -- I felt like I was really sharpening up, and making sure we don't lose that. So, I think it's just you don't want to hang 24 guys out to dry for, call it, seven or eight days, if you don't have to. It's the right thing to do, even if it's not the most desirable thing for me personally." Andrew Miller’s move to the disabled list is costly to the Cleveland Indians because he has not allowed a run in his 11 relief appearances this season. He has struck out 17 batters in 10 innings. A native of Gainesville, Florida, Andrew Miller attended the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, playing for the UNC Tar Heels. The Detroit Tigers selected him sixth overall in the 2006 amateur draft, and he made his major league debut that same season after three minor league appearances. After commencing his career in MLB with a 5.70 earned run average (ERA) over 66 starts with Detroit and Florida, he converted to full-time relief in 2012 with Boston, and has since served in middle relief, setup and closer roles. The Red Sox traded Miller to the Orioles in 2014, and Miller signed as a free agent with the Yankees after the season. The Yankees traded Miller to the Indians during the 2016 season. He has pitched in four playoffs, including with Baltimore, New York and Cleveland. Now Beliveau has a chance to come in and show he can stay on the Major League level. Beliveau, 31, signed a Minor League contract with the Indians during the offseason. He's pitched in parts of five seasons in the big leagues with the Cubs, Rays and Blue Jays. He began the season with Columbus and has pitched 8 2/3 scoreless innings, holding opposing hitters to a .071 batting average with 14 strikeouts. 2 / 2 Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings May 5, 2018 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1996-Eric Davis ties a major league record by hitting a grand slam home run for the second game in a row MLB.COM Back-to-back HRs get Reds back in win column Romano, bullpen combine to hold Marlins to 1 run May 4th, 2018 By Jeff Wallner Special to MLB.com 12:15 AM ET CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Reds came into Friday's game ranked fourth in the National League in on-base percentage, but it had yet to translate into runs. The Reds also did well in that category last year. Interim manager Jim Riggleman said the difference this season has been a lack of home runs, so far. That changed in the first inning on Friday, when Eugenio Suarez and Adam Duvall hit back-to-back homers, and Sal Romano pitching 5 1/3 solid innings, to lift the Reds to a 4-1 victory over the Marlins at Great American Ball Park. "It was a really good start," said Suarez of the big first inning. "When you score those four runs in the first inning, everybody gets comfortable. When we put it all together -- defense, pitching and hitting -- we can win a lot of games." Marlins left-hander Wei-Yin Chen ran into trouble in the first by allowing a single and a walk to begin Friday's game. His 1-2 pitch to Suarez, an 82-mph slider, landed in the upper deck in left field, putting the Reds ahead, 3-0.

  • Tribe Rallies from 4 Down, but Bullpen Falters by Jordan
Tribe rallies from 4 down, but bullpen falters By Jordan Bastian MLB.com @MLBastian CLEVELAND -- There is no need to worry about matchups when Andrew Miller emerges from the Indians' bullpen. Unfortunately for Cleveland, Miller's trip to the disabled list has altered the automatic feel to late innings. Prior to the Indians' 5-4 loss to the Mariners on Thursday, Miller was shelved with a left hamstring strain that will hopefully only cost him the requisite 10 days. A few hours later, the Tribe bullpen could not preserve the tie in a critical eighth inning, but that did not shake the team's confidence in the rest of the relief corps. "His numbers are pretty ridiculous," Indians starter Mike Clevinger said of Miller. "But, if you erased all of his numbers and [looked at] our bullpen's numbers, it's still pretty remarkable. You want that shutdown inning that you know he gives you every time -- or two shutdown innings -- but we have the guys to do it." Without Miller, Indians manager Terry Francona will need to mix and match the remainder of his relievers. In the eighth, Francona leaned on Dan Otero, Jeff Beliveau and Nick Goody against the meat of the Mariners' order. Otero and Beliveau retired the only hitters they faced in the frame, but Goody flinched, surrendering back-to-back doubles to Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager that put Seattle ahead for good. Goody had Cruz in an 0-2 count before eventually throwing a 2-2 slider low in the zone, where it met the slugger's bat and then soared to the wall in left.
