TENNESSEE FOOTBALL POSTGAME NOTES #2/2 Alabama 48, RV/RV Tennessee 17 Oct. 24, 2020 | Knoxville, Tenn. (Neyland Stadium) General • Saturday’s attendance at Neyland Stadium: 23,394 (First official sellout this season) • Tennessee's all-time record fell to 848-398-53. UT ranks ninth all-time in wins among NCAA Division I programs and second among current Southeastern Conference teams. • Saturday was the 103rd meeting in the all-time series between the Vols and Crimson Tide. Alabama leads the all- time series, 58-38-7, after Saturday’s victory. Vol Captains/Coin Toss • Tennessee’s team captains for Saturday’s game were Kenneth George Jr., Theo Jackson, Brandon Kennedy and Cade Mays. • Tennessee won the toss and deferred to the second half. Alabama received and defended the north goal. Player Debuts • Sophomore QB Brian Maurer made his season debut, completing one pass and scrambling for 15 yards to convert a third down on Tennessee’s final offensive possession. • Redshirt freshman OL Chris Akporoghene made his season debut, seeing action on the field goal unit. First Time Starters • Sophomore RB Eric Gray made his first-career start. Gray led the Vols with 57 rushing yards on 19 carries. • WR Velus Jones Jr. made his first start at Tennessee after making six career starts during his four seasons at Southern Cal. Offensive Highlights Team • Tennessee’s 13-play touchdown drive in the second quarter was the fourth scoring drive of 10 or more plays by the Vols this season. • Tennessee continued its efficiency on fourth downs, going 2-for-4 on Saturday. The Vols are 10-of-15 (66.7%) this season on fourth down. Individual • Career Highs/Firsts o True freshman WR Jalin Hyatt caught his first career touchdown on a 38-yard reception from Jarrett Guarantano in the second quarter. The catch was also a new career long for Hyatt at that time. o Later in the game, Hyatt hauled in a 48-yard catch to reset his career long. His two receptions tied a career high and his team-leading 86 receiving yard set a new career high. • Redshirt senior QB Jarrett Guarantano moved into seventh on UT’s career passing yards list (5,976) after throwing for 162 yards on Saturday afternoon. Guarantano passed Jeff Francis (1985-88), who threw for 5,867 yards in his career. • Guarantano also moved into sole possession of sixth place on Tennessee’s career passing touchdowns list with 38 after throwing two touchdown passes on Saturday. Guarantano was tied with Jonathan Crompton, Heath Shuler and Andy Kelly – who all had 36 career passing touchdowns – entering the day. • Senior WR Josh Palmer led Tennessee with four catches and had 57 receiving yards, including his fourth touchdown of the year. Palmer has had a receiving touchdown in three of UT’s five games this season. Defensive Highlights Team • With a forced fumble by DB Trevon Flowers and the ensuing recovery by DB Theo Jackson in the third quarter, Tennessee has now forced at least one turnover in every game this season and in five consecutive games dating back to last season. Individual • Career Highs/Firsts o Junior DB Trevon Flowers tied his career high with 10 tackles. He had eight tackles in the first half alone. Flowers also recorded his second career TFL and forced the first fumble of his career on Alabama’s first offensive possession of the second half. o Senior DB Theo Jackson recovered the forced fumble by Flowers, which was his first-career fumble recovery. o Sophomore LB Roman Harrison tied a career high with one sack, the fourth of his career. o Senior DL Matthew Butler set a new career high with six tackles and tied a career high with one sack. o Redshirt senior DB Kenneth George Jr. tied a career high with two passes defended. o True freshman DB Tamarion McDonald set a new career high with two tackles. Special Teams Highlights Individual • Senior PK Brent Cimaglia made his only field goal attempt of the afternoon, converting a 33-yard attempt in the second quarter. Cimaglia also was a perfect 2-for-2 on PATs to remain perfect in his career (84-of-84). • Junior P Paxton Brooks had another solid day punting the ball. The South Carolina native tied a career high with six punts that went for 275 yards (45.8 average). .
