Now that the Hawks are playing so well, complaints about having taken Williams instead of a point guard in that fateful draft five years ago have waned considerably. He's now a legitimate starter and double-digit scorer for a serious playoff team, and he's only getting better. Now Marvin, I don't want to say that people didn't expect you guys to play well this season after the success of last year, but compared to all the publicity teams like Boston and Orlando and Cleveland have gotten, in what ways is this Hawks team still a little underrated? "We've been doing pretty well. Coming into the season those two or three teams you mentioned were supposed to be at the top of the conference, and they still are so far, but we're a pretty good team in the East, too." So what is it about this team that's allowed the first quarter of the season to go so well for you guys? "We were put together four or five years ago, and we have a lot of guys that play the same position. That's starting to pay off. Guys like Josh Smith and Al Horford have definitely gotten better, Joe Johnson is a four-time All-Star, we've got this great point guard in Mike Bibby, and a super-scorer in Jamal Crawford coming off the bench. I just think the general manager of this club has done a great job putting together a great team." For you personally, the last couple of years have seen a lot of growth in your own game. What's it been like having come from all that criticism earlier in your career—being picked second overall when guys like Chris Paul and Deron Williams were available? Has it been important for you to prove all those skeptics wrong that complained about the validity of the pick? "You know, I never really bought into the draft speculation. Teams draft what they need, and I felt like at the time the Hawks really needed a point guard. But they didn't take one, and I'll tell you it was a surprise to me, too. But I never really did buy into all that talk. I'm fully aware of what I'm capable of and how hard I work. All I can do is just keep working harder each and every summer to become the best player I can be." THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS PLAYERS IN POWER: A HISTORICAL REVIEW OF CONTRACTUALLY BARGAINED AGREEMENTS IN THE NBA INTO THE MODERN AGE AND THEIR LIMITATIONS ERIC PHYTHYON SPRING 2020 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Political Science and Labor and Employment Relations with honors in Labor and Employment Relations Reviewed and approved* by the following: Robert Boland J.D, Adjunct Faculty Labor & Employment Relations, Penn State Law Thesis Advisor Jean Marie Philips Professor of Human Resources Management, Labor and Employment Relations Honors Advisor * Electronic approvals are on file. ii ABSTRACT: This paper analyzes the current bargaining situation between the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and the changes that have occurred in their bargaining relationship over previous contractually bargained agreements, with specific attention paid to historically significant court cases that molded the league to its current form. The ultimate decision maker for the NBA is the Commissioner, Adam Silver, whose job is to represent the interests of the league and more specifically the team owners, while the ultimate decision maker for the players at the bargaining table is the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), currently led by Michele Roberts. In the current system of negotiations, the NBA and the NBPA meet to negotiate and make changes to their collective bargaining agreement as it comes close to expiration. This paper will examine the 1976 ABA- NBA merger, and the resulting impact that the joining of these two leagues has had. This paper will utilize language from the current collective bargaining agreement, as well as language from previous iterations agreed upon by both the NBA and NBPA, as well information from other professional sports leagues agreements and accounts from relevant parties involved.

Claremont McKenna College Salary Inequality in the NBA: Changing Returns to Skill or Wider Skill Distributions? submitted to Professor Ricardo Fernholz by Jonah F. Breslow for Senior Thesis Spring 2017 April 24, 2017 Abstract In this paper, I examine trends in salary inequality from the 1985-86 NBA season to the 2015-16 NBA season. Income and wealth inequality have been extremely important issues recently, which motivated me to analyze inequality in the NBA. I investigated if salary inequality trends in the NBA can be explained by either returns to skill or widening skill distributions. I used Pareto exponents to measure inequality levels and tested to see if the levels changed over the sample. Then, I estimated league-wide returns to skill. I found that returns to skill have not significantly changed, but variance in skill has increased. This result explained some of the variation in salary distributions. This could potentially influence future Collective Bargaining Agreements insofar as it provides an explanation for widening NBA salary distributions as opposed to a judgement whether greater levels of inequality is either good or bad for the NBA.

By Joe Kaiser ESPN Smith had a great 2011 -12, but he is an unrestricted free agent after this season. It took Danny Ferry exactly seven days in his new role as the Atlanta Hawks' president of basketball operations and general manager to completely change the face of the franchise. His ability to swiftly orchestrate separate deals to part with high-priced veterans Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams signaled a commitment to rebuilding and shed as much as $77 million still owed to the two veterans beyond next season. Fast-forward two-and-a-half months to today, and Ferry's rebuilt roster has only a handful of contracts that go beyond the 2012-13 season: • Al Horford : Signed through 2015-16. • Lou Williams : Signed through 2013-14. • John Jenkins : 2012 first-round pick. • Mike Scott : 2012 second-round pick. • Jeff Teague : Due to become a restricted free agent at season's end, barring an extension. Notice one big name we didn't mention: Josh Smith . The tantalizingly talented, yet often frustrating, forward is among the many Hawks entering the final year of their deals, and he represents arguably the biggest challenge for Ferry to date: what to do with Smith. If handled correctly, this could be the next step toward eventually turning the Hawks into a perennial playoff contender. Mishandled, and this could undo everything good that came out of the trades of Johnson and Williams. So the question is, what's the smarter move for Ferry and the Hawks? a) Negotiate an extension that will keep Smith in Atlanta for the long term.

  • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.
