Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (Founder Acharya: International Society for Krishna Consciousness) desired that children are taught the sublime knowledge of Krishna so that they can perfect their lives. Srila Prabhupada 5 Introduction In the ancient Vedic literatures it is said that the cause and origin of everything is Lord Sri Krishna. The name Krishna means "all-attractive”. If someone is very rich, famous, renounced, clever, strong, or beautiful, we find such a person, to some extent attractive. Just imagine someone who is the wealthiest, the most beautiful, the most famous, etc. The person who has those attractive qualities to an unlimited degree is called Krishna. He is so attractive that anyone who sincerely tries to know Him will immediately become attracted. Krishna is God and is referred to by many names, according to different languages and cultures, such as Allah, Jehovah and Govinda. There are many incarnations of Lord Krishna. Each one is foretold in the Vedic literatures and appears within this material world in order to teach, by example, the path to spiritual perfection. The most recent incarnation of Lord Krishna appeared just over five hundred years ago as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the Golden Avatar, in Mayapur, West Bengal. It was Lord Chaitanya who predicted that the chanting of His holy names - Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare - would spread beyond the shores of India to every town and village in the world. This is the story of how the powerful devotee of Krishna, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, single-handedly brought about this amazing prophecy. (Some conversation quotes have been edited slightly for improved reading). * * * 6 Srila Prabhupada Srila Prabhupada introduced various aspects of Vedic culture, like Deity worship, to the western world. Srila Prabhupada 7 Childhood in Calcutta On September 1, 1896, the day after Janmashtami (the appearance day of Lord Krishna), in a little house in the Tollygunge suburb of Calcutta, a male child was born. His father, Gour Mohan De, and his mother, Rajani, named him Abhay Charan, "one who is fearless, having taken shelter at Lord Krishna's lotus feet.” (Since we are his disciples, we shall respectfully refer to him throughout this booklet as Srila Prabhupada.) An astrologer prepared a horoscope for the baby, and the family was overjoyed when they heard the result of his calculations. The astrologer said: “When this child reaches the age of seventy, he will cross the ocean, become a great teacher of religion, and open 108 Krishna temples.” And this is exactly what happened, as we shall see. At this time the British ruled India, and occupied much of the centre of Calcutta. Srila Prabhupada's home at 151 Harrison Road was in the Indian section of north Calcutta. Srila Prabhupada's father, Gour Mohan De, was a cloth merchant, and although not rich himself, was related to the wealthy Mullik family, which for hundreds of years had traded with the British in gold and salt. An entire block of houses on either side of Harrison Road belonged to Lokanath Mullik, and Gour Mohan and 8 Srila Prabhupada his family lived in a few rooms of a three-storied building within the Mullik properties. Across the street from the De’s residence was a Radha-Govinda temple where for the past 150 years the Mulliks had maintained worship of the Deities of Radha and Krishna. Various shops on the Mullik properties provided income for the Deities and for the priests conducting the worship. Every morning before breakfast, the Mullik family members would visit the temple to see the Deities of Radha-Govinda. They would offer cooked rice, kachauris, and vegetables on a large platter and would then distribute the prasadam (sanctified food) to the Deities' morning visitors from the neighbourhood. Among the daily visitors was Srila Prabhupada, accompanied by his mother, father, or servant. He would share a pram with the young son of the Mullik family called Siddhesvar; as Srila Prabhupada described: "I used to ride on the same perambulator with Siddhesvar Mullik. He used to call me Moti ("pearl”), and his nickname was Subidhi. And the servant pushed us together. If one day this friend did not see me, he would become mad. He would not go in the perambulator without me. We would not separate even for a moment.” The servant would steer the pram towards the arched gateway within the red sandstone wall bordering the Radha-Govinda mandira, and as Srila Prabhupada and his friend rode underneath the ornate metal arch and into the courtyard, they would see high above them two stone Srila Prabhupada 9 lions, the protectors of the temple compound, with their right paws extended. The servant pushed the pram closer, lifted the two boys out, and then, holding their hands, escorted them before the Deities. As Srila Prabhupada recollects: "I can remember standing at the doorway of Radha- Govinda temple saying prayers to Radha-Govinda murti (Deity). I would watch for hours together. The Deity was so beautiful, with His slanted eyes.” The golden Radha and Govinda Deities, freshly bathed and dressed, stood on Their silver throne amidst vases of colourful flowers. Radharani, dressed in a shiny silk sari, held up Her reddish right palm to bless onlookers, and Krishna, in His silk kurta and dhoti, played on a golden flute. Their necklaces of gold, pearls, and diamonds shimmered in the dappled sunlight. The silver crowns on Their heads were covered with jewels. Radha and Krishna were both slightly smiling. To Srila Prabhupada, the Deities appeared most attractive. Then the kirtana (chanting of the names of Krishna) began. Devotees chanted and played on mridangas (clay drums) and karatalas (small hand-held brass cymbals). Srila Prabhupada and his friend kept watching as the pujaris (priests) offered incense, its wispy smoke hanging mystically in the air, then a flaming ghee lamp, a conch shell, a handkerchief, flowers, a whisk, and a peacock fan. Finally the pujari blew the conch shell loudly, 10 Srila Prabhupada and the arati ceremony was over. * * * When Srila Prabhupada was one-and-a-half years old, he fell ill with typhoid. The family physician, Dr. Bose, prescribed chicken broth to help him recover. His father protested strongly. As strict devotees of Krishna they were pure vegetarians; no meat, fish, eggs, not even onions or garlic. "No,” Gour Mohan objected, "I cannot allow it.” "If you do not he may die,” argued the doctor. This was a difficult dilemma. Typhoid is an extremely serious disease, and often proves fatal to the very young and old. Yet for a devotee of Krishna, eating meat is strictly forbidden since it cannot be offered to the Deity, it is cruel to kill innocent animals and by the laws of karma (action and reaction) one will suffer the same pain as

  • Srila Prabhupada
About Srila Prabhupada His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada is the founder Acharya of ISKCON. He travelled to New York in 1965 at the age of 69, to spread the teachings of Lord Chaitanya. Srila Prabhupada visited Chennai in 1972 and 1975 and began the Chennai chapter of ISKCON. He specifically told his disciples to build a “gorgeous temple” in Chennai. His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was born in 1896 in Calcutta, India. He first met his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami, in Calcutta in 1922. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, a prominent devotional scholar and the founder of sixty-four branches of Gaudiya Mathas (Vedic institutes), liked this educated young man and convinced him to dedicate his life to teaching Vedic knowledge in the Western world. Srila Prabhupada became his student, and eleven years later (1933) at Allahabad, he became his formally initiated disciple. At their first meeting, in 1922, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura requested Srila Prabhupada to broadcast Vedic knowledge through the English language. In the years that followed, Srila Prabhupada wrote a commentary on the Bhagavad-gita and in 1944, without assistance, started an English fortnightly magazine. Recognizing Srila Prabhupada’s philosophical learning and devotion, the Gaudiya Vaisnava Society honored him in 1947 with the title “Bhaktivedanta.” In 1950, at the age of fifty-four, Srila Prabhupada retired from married life, and four years later he adopted the vanaprastha (retired) order to devote more time to his studies and writing. Srila Prabhupada traveled to the holy city of Vrndavana, where he lived in very humble circumstances in the historic medieval temple of Radha- Damodara.

  • Dharma As a Consequentialism the Threat of Hridayananda Das Goswami’S Consequentialist Moral Philosophy to ISKCON’S Spiritual Identity
Dharma as a Consequentialism The threat of Hridayananda das Goswami’s consequentialist moral philosophy to ISKCON’s spiritual identity. Krishna-kirti das 3/24/2014 This paper shows that Hridayananda Das Goswami’s recent statements that question the validity of certain narrations in authorized Vedic scriptures, and which have been accepted by Srila Prabhupada and other acharyas, arise from a moral philosophy called consequentialism. In a 2005 paper titled “Vaisnava Moral Theology and Homosexuality,” Maharaja explains his conception consequentialist moral reasoning in detail. His application of it results in a total repudiation of Srila Prabhupada’s authority, a repudiation of several acharyas in ISKCON’s parampara, and an increase in the numbers of devotees whose Krishna consciousness depends on the repudiation of these acharyas’ authority. A non- consequentialist defense of Śrīla Prabhupāda is presented along with recommendations for resolving the existential threat Maharaja’s moral reasoning poses to the spiritual well-being of ISKCON’s members, the integrity of ISKCON itself, and the authenticity of Srila Prabhupada’s spiritual legacy. Are you familiar, if you have looked at the board? Yeah! Sounds familiar? Not new! But ever ever new also at the same time! Never be-comes old! So here we are in land of Gauranga, Gauranga! And also we have gathered here amongst other reasons, gathered here for Kirtan Mela ki (Devotees respond: Jaya!) Yes, you have come here for Kirtan Mela! Some of you have just come for the Kirtan Mela.. So I thought of selecting a verse that talks of Caitanya Mahaprabhu as well as of course talks about the kirtana, sankirtana- yajna, that we are engaged in here. So quickly as time is running. krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam sangopangastra-parsadam yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi su-medhasah ( SB 11.5.32) Translation and Purport by disciples of His Divine Grace A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prab-hupada ki (Devotees respond: Jaya!) “In the Age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the names of Krsna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krsna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons and confidential companions.” “This same verse is quoted by Krsnadasa Kaviraja in the Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi-lila, Chapter Three, verse 52”. And I was reminded that Laghu Bhagavatamrta of Rupa Goswami, he also quotes this verse in the very beginning of Laghu Bhagavatamrta, Rupa Goswami does, its part of his mangalacarana, same verse.

Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada to represent Him in carrying out the responsibility of managing the International Society for Krishna Consciousness of which He is the Founder-Acarya and supreme authority. The GBC accepts as its life and soul His divine instructions and recognizes that it is completely dependent on His mercy in all respects. • Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Maharaja
SRILA BHAKTISIDDHANTA SARASVATI GOSWAMI MAHARAJA INTRODUCTION FOR THE BOOK ON BHAKTISIDDHANTA Sarasvati THAKURA During the late '70's and '80's, preaching duties in Bengal now and then broughtme in contact with direct disciples of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, and also with disciples of his disciples. From them I heard stories and teachings of Sarasvati Thakura. Hearing little bits here and there, my heart filled with wonder, and also pride on being connected with such a powerful transcendental personality. My eagerness to hear more increased. From my very beginning days in Krsna consciousness I--and surely all others in ISKCON also--was attracted by the personality of Saraswati Thakura. I would often look up at the big painting of him on the wall of our Bury Place (London) temple. It was as if his serious gaze came down directly from Goloka Vrindavana. He was known as "singha-guru"--a spiritual master as fearsome to non-devotees as a lion. Who would not be impressed on hearing of his austerity, learning, strictness, and above all his unflinching devotion to the lotus feet of Sri-Sri Gaura-Nitai and Sri-Sri Radha-Krsna, and his uncompromising, determined preaching of Their glories? Our own glorious spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Srila Prabhupada, was another transcendental "superman." Srila Prabhupada was utterly surrendered at the lotus feet of his guru, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, and always considered himself a humble servant of his spiritual master. Those of unbiased mind understand both to be empowered acaryas, saktyavesa-avataras. By his unbreakable bond of devotion to Srila Saraswati Thakura, Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has, by initiating us, linked us also eternally to his spiritual master.

  • Attaining Humility by Glorifying the Lord Hare Krishna Prabhujis And
Attaining Humility by Glorifying the Lord Date: 2005-06-09 Author: L. Harikumar Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev. It is really the amazing act of Paramatma that Kalacakra prabhu wrote about this verse. A few weeks back when we met, he told about this verse and this sunday I was reading this verse and word-word equivalents. Actually this verse lists 40 qualities and this was one of the favourite verses of Sri Madhvacharya. In the purport Srila Prabhupada makes a powerful point, "Even if it were possible to count the atoms after smashing the earth into powder, still it would not be possible to estimate the unfathomable transcendental qualities of the Lord.". I got the doubt, "Why only 40 are mentioned here and many other important qualities such as being the Supreme person, being all-pervasive, being the Lord of Vaikuntha etc are not mentioned ?". In the next few sentences Srila Prabhupada clarifies, "The above statement (verses) of the qualities of the Lord is just to estimate His qualities as far as a human being is able to see Him.". Any common human being even without devotional attitude and scriptural knowledge can perceive these qualities and in this way the Lord attracts them also. And the chief import of all the vedas is to glorify the qualities of God. Sri Madhvacharya quotes a verse from Mahopanishad which states this point. sarvottamaṁ sarvadoṣavyapetam guṇ̣airaśeṣaiḥ pūrṇamanyam samastāt vailakṣaṇyājñāpayitum pravṛttāḥ sarve vedā mukhyato naiva cānyat All the Vedas aim at revealing Narayana who is all-surpassing, free from all evil, infinite in all attributes and different from all else by reason of His uniqueness.
