A1 Damian Schwartz' "Existence Itself" is a compilation of well composed melodies that evolve, while gliding over the backbone of dance floor rhythms. Whilst containing five tracks, this record feels and breathes like a full length. "Public Domain" shows Schwarz' knowledge of jazz composition. The opening track contains A2 chord progressions that are unusual in popular music, but should soothe a more trained audience. Nevertheless, "Public Domain" is a positive composition that should appeal to selectors worldwide. "Heavy B1 Weather" is dripping with modulated chords, thoroughly selected bits of FX, and otherworldly arps. Deep rhythmic drum patterns guide the track into alterations of mood and a warm bath of intelligent melodies. B2 "Tyner" is a funked-out piece of work that sounds like a perfect PULP records. It's this track where Schwarz shows that he is up there with the giants of modern day funk sounds. It is an elegant opus in songwriting, and perhaps one of his most song-orientated creations. A subtle pop and prog overtones paint an aura full of A5 identity, and originality. The highlight is the presence of the venerated orchestral conductor, guitarist, and A6 composer Rodolfo Alchourron. He was a master in fusing the tango with jazz and rock, and piloted the B1 amazing band Sanata Y Clarificación. Also, worthy mentioning, there are lyrics of the renowned poet Mirta B2 Delfipo. La Lección del Viajero is a beautiful folk song in a dylanesque vein. Gloria y Guitarra and Augurio Del Silencioso have a peculiar Brazilian overtones. The album is about B1 reconnecting to one's true self and the discovery of the inner worlds: it is born from an ongoing artistic journey, which began in TSVI's childhood. The album comes with extensive sleevenotes and interviews with Dennis Bovell, Pauline Catlin, John Kpiaye and Winston Edwards (Studio B2 16). Brown Sugar were formed by three young teenage girls - Pauline Catlin, Caron Wheeler and Carol B3 Simms in South London in 1976. In the short period of time 1976-1980, the group - working with Dennis Bovell C1 on the mixing desk and John Kpiaye ('Brownie T) in the studio - recorded barely a handful of singles on the C2 new Lovers Rock label, a number of which went to the top of the UK reggae charts. But success stopped there, and with no album release and no industry support the group broke up in the early 1980s. Belgian guitarist and composer Wouter Rosseel’s love for Django Reinhardt, Sonny Rollins and swing jazz on one hand and reggae, rocksteady and ska on the other, has moved him to create Jamaican Jazz A1 Orchestra. With ingenious compositions that enter fluidly, Wouter has succeeded in finding the sweet spot where jazz and Jamaica meet, once in a while sidestepping to afrobeat and nyahbinghi. Several renown jazz musicians, most of them Ghent based joined the project and in 2013 Jamaican Jazz Orchestra was born. After a demo and an EP, Jamaican Jazz Orchestra released their first full album ‘Encounters’ in 2015 on Zephyrus Records. Late november they’re releasing an instrumental vinyl single with two new songs. (Ah Beh Bah / Big Belly Blues) Early 2019 the band hits the studio to record their second full album. Recording on B1 analog tape, allowing producer Tom Callens (Lady Linn, Little Dots, South of the Border) and mixing engineer Victor Rice to uncover that typical old school sound of reggae and jazz recordings between 60’s and early 80’s.
