This report summarizes important highlights from a number of leading researchers who are experts in the specifics that inform this report, and who have written extensively at the intersection of race and technology. With the rise of networked digital technologies, scholars and global internet rights advocates across different fields have increasingly documented the ways in which these technologies reproduce, facilitate or exacerbate structural racial inequality. However, global human rights discussion and mobilization against the harms of new information technologies mostly revolve around a specific set of issues: hate crimes and hate speech, the role of new information technologies in facilitating hate incidents online, the use of online networks and fora to coordinate racial hatred, and threats to individuals’ right to privacy. - 
												
												Incongruous and Illegitimate: Antisemitic and Islamophobic Semiotic Violence Against Women in Politics in the United Kingdom
Incongruous and illegitimate Antisemitic and Islamophobic semiotic violence against women in politics in the United Kingdom Rebecca Kuperberg Rutgers University Violence against women in politics encompasses physical, psychological, economic, sexual and semiotic forms of violence, targeting women because their gender is seen as threatening to hegemonic political norms. Theoretical debates over these categories and empirical applications to global cases often overlook that backgrounds and lived experiences of women in politics can differ considerably. Using the United Kingdom as a case study, in this article I analyze different manifestations of online semiotic violence – violence perpetrated through words and images seeking to render women incompetent and invisible (Krook 2020, 187) – against female, religious-minority politicians. Through a qualitative discursive approach, I identify patterns and strategies of violence in an original dataset of Twitter posts that mention the usernames of seven prominent Muslim and Jewish female politicians. Results show that multiply-marginalized politicians are exposed to both sexist and racist rhetoric online. In this case, semiotic violence functions to render women incompetent using racist disloyalty tropes as well as to render women invisible by invalidating their testimonies of abuse. Queer Choreographies of Twitter Memes as Objects of Digital Embodiment Increasing Access to Means of Digital Cultural Creation By W.G. Ellis W.G. Ellis is currently a graduate student in the Department of Women’s Studies at San Diego State University. They pursue interdisciplinary research, touching on myriad fields including queer theory, trannational studies, Arab American studies, cultural studies, performance studies, science and technology studies, critical food studies, and digial humanities. At the time of this publication, their work has been accepted for presentation at Northwestern University’s Queertopia conference (2019), the American Studies Association conference (2021), as well as the Arab American Studies Association conference (2021). They look forward to continuing their academic career for many years to come. Introduction The spread of social media offers insight into how understandings and formations of bodies are created intra-communally in global and pluralistic ways. This gives us an opportunity to see how social bodies are rendered through syntheses of digital narrative that are not only mimetic to a more seemingly natural social body, but indelibly a part of holistically comprised social bodies. Gay memes seek to establish a norm through which the gayness of a subject can be made intelligible to others in the know. They rely on simple yet seemingly arbitrary qualifiers— drinking iced coffee, walking fast, and enjoying certain pieces of media or actors at formational ages—to determine what a gay body on Twitter should look like.
