Therefore, the current study was designed and carried out during the past decade. A list of LFPs for 207 butterfly species (Super family Papilionoidea) of Sri Lanka is presented based on local studies and includes 785 plant-butterfly combinations and 480 plant species. Many of these combinations are reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. The impact of introducing new plants on the dynamics of abundance and distribution of butterflies, the possibility of butterflies being pests on crops, and observations of LFPs of rare butterfly species, are discussed. This information is crucial for the conservation management of the butterfly fauna in Sri Lanka. Key words: conservation, crops, larval food plants (LFPs), pests, plant-butterfly combination. Salvadora 10 species are distributed mainly in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia. In Pakistan it is represented by a single genus Salvadora with so far, two morphologically distinct species i.e., S. persica L. and S. oleoides Decne. In the present investigation, a comparative and comprehensive leaf, branch, fruit, seed, and pollen grain macro and micro morphological characters have been analyzed and complemented with chemotaxonomy of the seed proteins as biochemical markers for identifications. As expected taxonomical characters within the Salvadora species revealed great vegetative morphological differences, especially plant length and width. Floral morphological characters appear to be more stable, except the fruit colours which are different. Furthermore, sizes and the anatomical characters of the leaf, branch, seed and pollen grain studied by scanning electron microscopy revealed that in contrast to S. oleoides Decne much intra-species variation exist in S. persica L. and at least two types and/or varieties are available in Sindh, Pakistan. Accepted 26 May, 2010 An ethno-medicinal survey was conducted in various parts of desert and semi desert ecosystem in Saudi Arabia with the aim to document ethnecological and medicinal value of Salvadora persica. It has been used by Muslim communities since centuries in traditional system of medicine. It remained a source of income and it is believed to be a type of religious toothbrush plant. The folklore uses, indigenous knowledge of local people, and traditional healers regarding S. persica were collected by using standard protocol. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that S. persica is a multipurpose plant. It is one of the commonly used plants for medicinal purposes as well as due to its ethno-ecological importance. Various parts of S. persica are used as: food, fruits, fodder, a source of lipids, gum and resins. In addition, it is also used as a honey bee rearing plant. Due to its multipurpose use it has been exploited ruthlessly by all the sections of the society since decades which has endangered its status. Because of its great medicinal properties it has been in heavy demand in the Indian Herbal Drug Industry. Its branches are commonly used as tooth brush in villages and rural area of the country. Apart from its medicinal benefits it can also be utilized for carbon storage and sequestration for long durations thus, helps in our fight against Global Warming and Climate Change. As the shrub/tree has become endangered all steps need to be taken to conserve this important species otherwise a time would come when we would be devoid of its multiple benefits. Plant Tissue Culture is an excellent technique for large scale propagation of this tree species and at present there are various protocols available in public domain for its mass multiplication but none of the protocols has been utilized to restore the plant status till date. Serious efforts by Government (Central and State) are required for mass multiplication of the species on one hand and conservation of its germplasm on the other. -

The vast land of Rajasthan together with its vegetation and flora has a variety of medicinal plants growing in different habitats. The present study aimed to document the preliminary analysis of rare and threatened medicinal plants of Beer Jhunjhunu Conservation Reserve of Rajasthan. The study area is a protected forest area and considered as important in terms of biodiversity. The area harbors rich flora and fauna. However, the rich resources including medicinal plants are disappearing at an alarming rate due to over- exploitation. Therefore, the management of traditional medicinal plant resources has become a matter of urgency. Conservation of the species in natural habitat and artificial regeneration would be the best opinion to recover the species from near extinction. Dioecy is a rare breeding system among the angiosperms (approximately 6% of all flowering plants) while hermaphroditism (having male and female function present within each flower) is predominant. Dioecious angiosperms may be rare because the transitions to dioecy have been recent or because dioecious angiosperms experience decreased diversification rates (speciation minus extinction) compared to plants with other breeding systems. -

Abstract Salvadora oleiodes is a tropical tree species belonging to the little-known family Salvadoraceae and distributed in the arid regions of Africa and Asia. Aims of our study were to trace the microevolutionary legacy of this tree species with the help of sequence-based multi-local phylogeography and to find the comparative placement of family Salvadoraceae within angiosperm clade malvids. A total 20 geographical isolates were collected from different regions of North India, covering a major part of its species range within the Indian Subcontinent. Sequence data from nuclear-encoded Internal Transcribed Spacer region (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and plastid-encoded trnL-F spacer region, were generated for this species for the first time in the world. -

Numerous investigations have studied the pharmacologic actions of SP in oral disease therapies but its promising outcomes in periodontal health and treatment are not yet entirely described. The current study has been planned to analyze the reported effects of SP as a support to periodontal therapy to indorse regeneration and healing. In consort with clinical trials, in vitro investigations show the advantageous outcomes of SP adjunctive to periodontal treatment. Yet, comprehensive supplementary preclinical and clinical investigations at molecular and cellular levels are indispensable to reveal the exact therapeutic mechanisms of SP and its elements for periodontal health and therapy. In the past few decades, however, these mangrove forests have been largely degraded and destroyed during the process of development. The negative environmental and socio-economic impacts on mangrove ecosystems have led many government and non- government agencies, together with civil societies, to launch mangrove conservation and rehabilitation programmes, especially during the 1990s. In the course of such activities, programme staff have faced continual difficulties in identifying plant species growing in the field. Despite a wide availability of mangrove guidebooks in Southeast Asia, none of these sufficiently cover species that, though often associated with mangroves, are not confined to this habitat.
