SIMONE A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2009 1 © 2009 Daniel J. Simone 2 To Michael and Tessa 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A driver fails without the support of a solid team, and I thank my friends, who supported me lap-after-lap. I learned a great deal from my advisor Jack Davis, who when he was not providing helpful feedback on my work, was always willing to toss the baseball around in the park. I must also thank committee members Sean Adams, Betty Smocovitis, Stephen Perz, Paul Ortiz, and Richard Crepeau as well as University of Florida faculty members Michael Bowen, Juliana Barr, Stephen Noll, Joseph Spillane, and Bill Link. I respect them very much and enjoyed working with them during my time in Gainesville. I also owe many thanks to Dr. Julian Pleasants, Director Emeritus of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program, and I could not have finished my project without the encouragement provided by Roberta Peacock. I also thank the staff of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. Finally, I will always be grateful for the support of David Danbom, Claire Strom, Jim Norris, Mark Harvey, and Larry Peterson, my former mentors at North Dakota State University. • Racing Heroes and Grieving Widows: a Study of the Representation of Death in Motorsport by Jean-Simon Demers
Department of communication Racing heroes and grieving widows: A study of the representation of death in motorsport By Jean-Simon Demers Thesis submitted to the Graduate studies faculty for the Communication master’s program Master of Arts Supervisor: Mark Lowes University of Ottawa Ottawa, Ontario 2018-09-23 © Jean-Simon Demers, Ottawa, Canada, 2018 Abstract Gilles Villeneuve, Ayrton Senna, Greg Moore, Dale Earnhardt. Only four of a number of high- profile race car drivers to have lost their lives taking part in events at the highest levels of motorsport. The aim of the present study is to analyze the coverage of death in high-level motorsport in the printed sports news of La Presse and The Toronto Star in Canada for the 1982 to 2017 period inclusively. Mobilizing the existing literature on risk-taking, namely Lyng’s concept of edgework, as well as Hall’s work on representation, a thematic analysis of a sample of sports news articles (N=488) was conducted. Three main themes emerged from the analysis. The discussion surrounding motorsport fatalities revolved around the individual (the deceased driver), the social aspect of the death (primarily the family members left behind), and journalistic practices (how to cover death). In conclusion, the coverage of death in motorsport was found to be an instance where the athlete is heroized and sometimes revered even decades after their death. In this aspect, the figure of Gilles Villeneuve remains pivotal to motorsport discussions in Canada, even to this day. It also was found that sports journalists, through their coverage of deadly accidents, enact the traditional roles of the journalist in offering social criticism of their subject matter to their readers, and that motorsport drivers enact a highly specific type of masculinity when practicing their sport.

  • Formula One Racing: Driver Vs. Technology
Intersect, Vol 5 (2012) Formula One Racing: Driver vs. Technology Stephanie Young Stanford University Abstract In the realm of car racing there is a constant competition between performance enhancing technologies and pure driving skill. This paper looks to a popular racing series in Europe and Asia called Formula One to illustrate this point. An organization worth millions of dollars, Formula One's mission statement is dual fold: to pit the world's best drivers against each other and challenge the world's best car manufacturers in competition. Formula One racing is therefore composed of dual components essential to car racing: the competition between drivers and the competition between technologies. At what point does such an advance of technology diminish the role of the driver? And at what point does regulating technology impede the development of technology for consumer cars? This paper examines several key legislations in the realm of car racing as well as the spillover of technology from car racing into consumer street cars. Ultimately, the author suggests that technology, when properly guided, can serve both car racing and innovation. Introduction In 2009 the popular, international race series Formula One introduced the option of using a mechanical kinetic energy recovery system, a system that can capture energy from the deceleration of the car and can store that energy for later use. Later in 2009, the manufacturer of the system announced that the further development can provide a “significantly more compact, efficient, lighter and environmentally-friendly solution than the traditional alternative of electrical-battery systems” (Hanlon, 2011), the same electrical-battery systems utilized by millions of hybrids on the road today.
