The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio is widely accepted to have an important influence in maintaining normal intestinal homeostasis. Increased or decreased F/B ratio is regarded as dysbiosis, whereby the former is usually observed with obesity, and the latter with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Probiotics as live microorganisms can confer health benefits to the host when administered in adequate amounts. There is considerable evidence of their nutritional and immunosuppressive properties including reports that elucidate the association of probiotics with the F/B ratio, obesity, and IBD. Orally administered probiotics can contribute to the restoration of dysbiotic microbiota and to the prevention of obesity or IBD. However, as the effects of different probiotics on the F/B ratio differ, selecting the appropriate species or mixture is crucial. The most commonly tested probiotics for modifying the F/B ratio and treating obesity and IBD are from the genus Lactobacillus. In this paper, we review the effects of probiotics on the F/B ratio that lead to weight loss or immunosuppression. -

The Lactobacilli are replaced by aerobic facultative pathogens like E.coli, Staphylococcus aureus, group B Streptococci, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Enterococcus species which lead to ascending vaginal infections and various complications of pregnancy. Aim and Objectives: To analyze the prevalence of aerobic vaginitis in third trimester of pregnancy and to study different aerobic bacterial vaginal pathogens and their antibiogram. Materials and Method: One hundred and sixty six pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy were studied for aerobic pathogens by gram staining and culture- sensitivity. High vaginal swab was taken of all the women and sent for culture and sensitivity. Diagnosis of aerobic vaginitis was made on microscopy and culture report. Results: Out of total 166 women, 88 were asymptomatic and 78 were symptomatic. Significant aerobic growth was seen in 29 women. Seventeen (21.79%) symptomatic women had positive vaginal culture and 12 (13.64%) asymptomatic women showed positive aerobic vaginal cultures. -

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of SilTechTM vaginal softgel capsules, containing new micro- crystals of silver monovalent ions, for aerobic vaginitis (AV). Methods: This prospective study enrolled 32 women diagnosed with AV. All recruited women were treated with SilTechTM vaginal softgel capsules once daily for 7 days (one course). Therapeutic efficacy was evaluated based on clinical and microscopic criteria, and cure rates were calculated. Women who were improved (but not cured) received a second course of therapy. Patients classified with clinical and microscopic failure were treated using other strategies. Results: After one course of therapy, 59.2% (19/32) of women were cured, 19.0% (6/32) were improved (but not cured) and 21.8% (7/32) failed to re- spond to the therapy. After two courses of therapy, clinical improvement was achieved in addi- tional two women. -

Vol-6 Issue-3 2020 IJARIIE-ISSN(O)-2395-4396 REVIEW ON Lactobacillus fermentum Dr.Sudeepa E.S, Bhavini K Dept. of Biotechnology, Nehru Arts and Science College, Coimbatore ABSTRACT Milk and other dairy products are considered as the most abundant sources of LAB (Lactic Acid Bacteria), which is also a member of the gut micro biota of man.The genus Lactobacillus consists of a diverse group of rod-shaped, Gram-positive, non-spore forming, non-pigmented, catalase negative and microaerophilic to strictly anaerobic organisms. Lactobacillus fermentumis a gram positive rod shaped bacterium and a heterofermentative organism, found abundantly in fermented food and vegetables. It is catalase negative and exhibits various enzymatic, amylase and antimicrobial activities. The bacterium also produces bacteriocins, which are peptides that can act as food preservatives as well as substitute to antibiotics.The main aim of this review article is to study, analyse and interpret various information on Lactobacillus fermentumhighlighting its sources, isolation and characterisation methodology, its potential in fermentation and the possible applications of the same in various sectors. The Lactobacillus fermentumrods are of variable length. It is a catalase negative, non-motile and non-sporing organism. Lactobacillus fermentum uses several carbohydrates such as arabinose, cellobiose, galactose, maltose, mannose, melibiose, raffinose, ribose, sucrose, trehalose, and xylose[19], but fermentation is strain dependent. -

This study evaluated the taxonomy of Lactobacillaceae and Leuconostocaceae on the basis of whole genome sequences. Parameters that were evaluated included core genome phylogeny, (conserved) pairwise average amino acid identity, clade- specific signature genes, physiological criteria and the ecology of the organisms. ABSTRACT Lactobacillus reuteri LPB P01-001 was isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of wild swine and was characterised by biochemical testing and sequencing of gene 16S rRNA. A simple and low-cost culture medium based on cane sugar (2.5% p/v) and yeast extract (1% p/v) was used in the production of this probiotic. The fermentative conditions were a) pH control at 6.5 and b) no pH control; both were set at 37°C in a 12 L slightly stirred tank bioreactor. Fermentation parameters such as the specific growth rate, productivity and yield of biomass, lactic and acetic acid levels were determined. L. reuteri LPB P01-001 behaves as an aciduric bacteria because it grows better in a low pH medium without pH control. However, the lactic acid production yield was practically half (9.22 g.L-1) of that obtained under a constant pH of 6.5, which reached 30.5 g.L-1 after 28 hours of fermentation. The acetic acid production was also higher under pH-controlled fermentation, reaching 10.09 g.L-1 after 28 hours of fermentation. -
