CITY OF PACIFIC GROVE 300 Forest Avenue, Pacific Grove, 93950

TO: Chair Max and Members of the Museum Board FROM: Joyce Halabi, Deputy Public Works Director MEETING DATE: 01/19/2021 SUBJECT: How the City Museum Board may best serve the needs of the Point Pinos Lighthouse going forward.

RECOMMENDATION Discuss and decide any action needed

DISCUSSION The City Museum Board is working with the City, interested Stakeholders and the Public to determine how it will fulfill its advisory role to the City on the Point Pinos Lighthouse. This discussion will focus on how to best serve the Lighthouse in this capacity during the current pandemic and beyond, recognizing that the Board is not a decision-making body and is not responsible for programming or operations but can provide advice and make general suggestions for the city to consider. Currently, no public visitation, programming, or docent activity on site is possible, but restoration and upkeep by the Heritage Society continue and the Board can provide input on current and future/potential operations and programming.

The Board would like to frame its role in two capacities: 1. a forum for collecting feedback and high-level suggestions from Point Pinos Lighthouse Stakeholder Groups and the Public on Operations and Programming for consideration by the City. This would include a wide variety of feedback and suggestions. Currently, suggestions to the City discussed by the Board in the November meeting center around what types of public activities might be possible when the pandemic restrictions loosen, focusing on outdoor activities in the following categories: art, natural history, lighthouse history/tours. Suggestions also included coordinating public activities with those of the PG Museum of Natural History. These suggestions are included as a separate agenda item, which can be discussed separately or integrated into this discussion. 2. the receiver of data/metrics and information on the upkeep, restoration, visitation and other activities that take place at the lighthouse to be shared with the public There was a discussion about metrics at the November 9th meeting and these can be expanded and formalized so that the City knows what to report to the Board at each public quarterly meeting. Note: Data collection has started on website traffic and Facebook use (both numbers are down during the pandemic). Obviously, no visitor data is available on a closed lighthouse.

The board will discuss and decide on specific metrics to collect for each quarterly meeting to be reported quarterly by City Staff.

Agenda No. 7

CITY OF PACIFIC GROVE 300 Forest Avenue, Pacific Grove, California 93950

TO: Chair Max and Members of the Museum Board FROM: Joyce Halabi, Deputy Public Works Director MEETING DATE: 01/19/2021 SUBJECT: Public Activities at the Lighthouse

RECOMMENDATION Recommend potential public programming activity categories to the City to explore once the pandemic restrictions loosen for the Point Pinos Lighthouse. Ask the city to report back in the Spring Quarterly Board meeting on feasibility.

DISCUSSION Given that the interior of the lighthouse is not likely to be open to the public for many months, the board will discuss with stakeholders and the public potential outdoor activity programs which might be held outdoors once the pandemic restrictions loosen. These outdoor activity categories include: natural history and ecology tours and lessons, lighthouse history tours and art classes. There may be potential overlap between the PG Museum of Natural History and the Lighthouse for these activities. Agenda No. 8

CITY OF PACIFIC GROVE 300 Forest Avenue, Pacific Grove, California 93950

TO: Chair Max and Members of the Museum Board FROM: Joyce Halabi, Deputy Public Works Director MEETING DATE: 01/19/2021 SUBJECT: Operations Update – Emily Fish Video

RECOMMENDATION Receive update and view video.

DISCUSSION Work has begun on v2.0 of a video about Emily Fish and the 1906 earthquake. This is meant to be a proof of concept for the idea of making more videos related to the Point Pinos Lighthouse. These would be posted on the website, Facebook and YouTube and would complement the one that the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove commissioned for the basement exhibit (already on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXKSbw1ooaI).

See http://www.pointpinoslighthouse.org/1906/ for the "Emily Fish and 1906 Earthquake" video.
