Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Cody Poteet (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (all earned) on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts in his four and a third innings of work in his Double-A debut. Jackson left-handed starting pitcher Alex Young (1-0) earned the victory, pitching five innings where he allowed a run on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Marlins No. 2 prospect Monte Harrison got Jacksonville off to a hot start in the top of the first with a leadoff triple. Two batters later, John Norwood brought him home with an RBI single that gave Jacksonville a 1-0 lead. The Generals tied the game at 1-1 with Kevin Medrano’s solo homer in the bottom of the first inning. Jackson added an RBI triple by Galli Cribbs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead, then Cribbs collected an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to grow the lead to 3-1. An inning later, Marty Herum hit a two-run homer to left field to put the lead at 5-1, and he was the last batter Poteet faced in the game. Jacksonville responded with a two-run top of the sixth inning. Austin Dean hit an RBI double that brought home Isan Diaz to make it 5-2, then Brian Schales collected a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Norwood to cut Jackson’s lead to 5-3. Against Jacksonville left-handed reliever Jeff Kinley in the bottom of the seventh, a pinch-hit two-RBI double by Jackson’s Jose Vinicio grew the Generals lead to 7-3, which would be the final score. Norwood and Dean provided the only multi-hit games for the Jumob Shrimp, combining for four of Jacksonville’s seven hits in the game. The game featured scoreless relief work from Jacksonville right-handed relievers Brandon Barker and Marcus Crescentini. UPCOMING SCHEDULE AND PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS DATE OPP. On the second pitch he saw from Generals left-handed pitcher Alex Young, he laced an RBI triple to the opposite field in right, setting up Jacksonville’s first run in the top of the first inning. The triple was Harrison’s 11th of his career, and last year he only hit two all season. His last triple had been for High-A Carolina in the Brewers system on August 12, 2017. Harrison is regarded as the Marlins No. 2 prospect according to MLB.com, and was acquired by the Marlins as part of a haul of prospects in a trade from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for Christian Yelich in January. Neidert Makes Marlins Organization Debut: Tonight right-handed pitcher Nick Neidert makes his Miami Marlins organization debut as he starts for the Jumbo Shrimp against the Jackson Generals. Neidert was one of the key pieces in last December’s trade between the Marlins and Mariners that sent Dee Gordon to Seattle. Neidert is a former second round pick by the Mariners, and last season was the California League Pitcher of the Year for his work at High-A Modesto, going 10-3 with a 2.76 ERA in 19 starts. Norwood and Dean, Driving in Runs: Now that sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Two of Jacksonville’s three runs batted in last night were courtesy of returning outfielders John Norwood and Austin Dean. Last season Norwood led Jacksonville with 62 runs batted in, while Austin Dean drove in 30 runs for the Jumbo Shrimp in the second half of the season, helping the Jumbo Shrimp win a second half South Division title. The duo are the only two players among Jacksonville’s returning position players that have played a full season in Jacksonville, with Dean doing so in 2016 when he was a Southern League Midseason All-Star as well as parts of last season, with Norwood being a Southern League Midseason All-Star in 2017. Shrimp Have Prospects: On the Opening Day roster, the Jumbo Shrimp have five players who are listed by MLB.com as Top 30 Miami Marlins prospects for the 2018 season: OF Monte Harrison (2), Isan Diaz (8), RHP Nick Neidert (10), RHP Merandy Gonzalez (16), and RHP Pablo Lopez (24), who is currently on Jacksonville’s disabled list. All five of these prospects were acquired by the Marlins in trades within the past 12 months. Generally Speaking: This is the first of two series between the Jumbo Shrimp and Generals in 2018. This is the only trip to Jackson for the Jumbo Shrimp this season, while the Generals will make their only trip to Jacksonville from June 13 to 17 to close out the first half of the season. Last season the Jumbo Shrimp and Generals split their five meetings, with Jacksonville winning three of five games in Jacksonville in late May, while the Generals won three of five in late June. The reason for so few meetings? The Jumbo Shrimp and Generals are separated by 713 miles, with typical bus rides lasting between 11 and 13 hours between North Florida and West Tennessee.
