In addi- Mtion to being home to the 6th Air Mobility Wing and a flight base for the 927th Air Refueling Wing operations, MacDill Air Force Base has a diverse and impressive array of military tenants. The world’s leading crop nutrition company turns 10 this year. While the company’s place in the state’s century-old phosphate mining history goes back much further, The Mosaic Company’s vision for continued operations and contributions to the state shows great promise for a bright future.

Mosaic’s Big Bend Terminal – Investing for the Future

Special Advertising Report Since the discovery of phosphate in Central Florida’s Bone Valley Region in 1881, dozens of mining companies have extracted phosphate from the area and delivered fertilizer to farmers in North America and around the world. But as decades passed, mergers and acquisitions consolidated the industry to just two phosphate companies with operations in Florida – The Mosaic Company in Central Florida and Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) in North Florida.

Mosaic was formed in October 2004 through the merger of the crop nutrition division of Cargill, Inc. and IMC Global Inc. In March 2014, the company completed its acquisition of the phosphate business of CF Industries, Inc. for $1.2 billion, solidifying Mosaic’s role as the leading phosphate operator in Florida.

As the world’s largest producer of phosphates and potash — two of the three mineral nutrients necessary for plant growth — Mosaic responsibly mines and manufactures these natural resources to produce high-quality fertilizers. These crop nutrients give farmers a fi ghting chance to meet the increasing global demand for food as the population rises to an anticipated 9 billion in 2050.

A major contributor to the economic health of Central Florida, as well as a committed supporter of the communities where the company operates, Mosaic is working responsibly to extend the life of operations. The company has plans to invest more than a billion dollars in upgrading and building new facilities, while staying true to Mosaic’s promise to restore the land for future generations. Responsibly Mining Phosphate to Support Local and Global Food Production

At first glance, a phosphate mine seems an unlikely key to the food production chain. But in reality, Mosaic provides farmers with phosphate crop nutrients that enable them to produce more food on less land. In Florida, 90 percent of the phosphate mined becomes fertilizer.

Mosaic moves products to wholesalers and retailers through an extensive distribution system. More than 65 percent goes to North American farmers; key distribution facilities in eight countries serve others in approximately 40 countries.

Economic Impact In Central Florida and Tampa Bay, Mosaic directly employs Mosaic employs nearly nearly 4,000 Floridians and supports tens of thousands of additional jobs in related fields such as manufacturing, 4,000 Floridians and maintenance, engineering, horticulture, environmental science and transportation. During the 2013 calendar supports a total of year, the economic impact included a $418 million payroll, 40,000 direct, indirect $403 million in capital expenditures, $60 million in land reclamation, $23 million in county tangible and real estate and associated jobs. taxes and $31 million in state severance taxes.

Mosaic’s Tampa Marine Terminal employees proudly display their new company logo on March 17 when the company welcomed CF Industries phosphate employees to the team. Mosaic at Port Tampa Bay

Mosaic has terminal and warehouse operations at Port Sutton, Hookers Point and Big Bend and is committed to working safely with the port community. Phosphate has long been the lifeblood of Port Tampa Bay and Central Florida, and currently accounts for more than two-thirds of the port’s $15.1 billion annual economic activity. According to a recent study released by Port Tampa Bay, the phosphate industry supports more than half of the Port’s 80,000 direct, indirect and related jobs. Severance taxes from Mosaic’s phosphate operations in Hillsborough County are also used to fund the PORTS® system, which provides real-time oceanographic data used to enhance the safety of commercial shipping operations. Mosaic Operations

Mosaic’s operations stretch through the Bone Valley from Polk County southward through portions of Hillsborough, Manatee, Hardee and DeSoto counties – the richest phosphate region in the U.S.

Mosaic’s Central Florida operations currently include four phosphate mines (Four Corners, South Fort Meade, South Pasture and Wingate) and four fertilizer manufacturing facilities (Bartow, New Wales, Plant City and Riverview) all with a strong commitment to responsible operations from mine to market. This year, Mosaic’s Hookers Prairie Mine officially “mined out” after nearly 40 years in service. Employees who did not take advantage of retirement incentives were relocated to other existing mining facilities.

Mosaic is currently seeking permits to extend the life of existing mines in Hardee and Manatee counties and open a new mine in DeSoto County. Successfully permitting these additional mining operations will create hundreds of jobs and provide millions more in taxes for the state and local governments.

With decades of phosphate reserves left to mine in Central Florida, Mosaic will continue to coordinate with diverse stakeholder groups and continuously set the highest standards for safe and responsible mining and manufacturing operations.

In fiscal 2013, The Mosaic Company and The Mosaic Company Foundation donated more than $10 million in the communities where the company operates in Florida.

Celebrating the Beauty of Central Florida: Streamsong Resort

Mosaic’s interest in Central Florida extends beyond the life of our mining operations, as illustrated by the company’s construction of the Streamsong Resort and Conference Center. Located on 16,000 acres of formerly mined lands near the border of Polk and Hardee counties, the facility offers a one-of-a-kind destination that embraces the natural character of the land. Hailed by golf and outdoor recreation publications, Streamsong is boosting the local economy with 300 jobs.

The 216-room lodge with three restaurants and its own salon and spa opened in January 2014. Operating Sustainably

Mosaic is committed to sustainable practices and is the only mining company to have been recognized by Corporate Responsibility and Ethisphere. Reclaiming Every Acre Mined

Since 1975, the state of Florida requires the phosphate industry to return every acre it mines back to productive use through a process called mine reclamation. Before mining may begin, Mosaic must develop and obtain regulatory approval of comprehensive mining and reclamation plans to safeguard people, the environment, natural resources and wildlife.

After mining in southern Polk County, Mosaic reclaimed this small tributary that provides freshwater flow to the Peace River. Special Advertising Report

Mosaic is a leader in returning mined lands to productive uses for both wildlife and people. The company’s reclamation team includes dozens of managers, biologists, ecologists and engineers, and has proven time and again that they can design and build functioning ecosystems that fully comply with all regulatory mandates. Successful reclamation projects have transformed formerly mined land into wetlands, lakes, uplands, wildlife habitat, pasture, agriculture, tree farms, parks, golf courses, hunting and fi shing areas, neighborhoods and commercial development.

Mosaic has shown commercial success with growing orange groves, sod, and eucalyptus and ornamental trees on reclaimed land and is now exploring cultivating olive trees. Caring for Wildlife

Working with wildlife agencies, Mosaic successfully translocates species that are endangered, threatened or “of special concern” from mining areas to both unmined and reclaimed lands – many of which are designated as perpetual conservation easements. From indigo snakes and gopher tortoises to burrowing owls and scrub jays, special care is given to wildlife before, during and after mining. Special Advertising Report

Recycling and Reusing Water

Over the last 20 years, Mosaic’s Central Florida operations have decreased groundwater use by more than 50 percent. In fact, Mosaic now recycles and reuses approximately 90 percent of the water at its Florida facilities. Any water permitted to leave Mosaic sites must meet Florida’s stringent water quality standards. Generating and Using Clean Energy

Mosaic uses clean, green energy generated at the company’s manufacturing facilities at plants and mines. Mosaic also transports the inputs and finished crop nutrient products with fuel-efficient trucks, locomotives and barges.

Mosaic is one of the largest renewable energy producers in Florida, generating enough “clean and green” energy to power more than 100,000 homes.

Growing More with Less Land

Without fertilizer, much more land would be required to meet global demand. To help ensure that fertilizers are being used efficiently, Mosaic supports the 4Rs Nutrient Stewardship Framework — using the Right Source of fertilizer at the Right Rate, at the Right Time and in the Right Place. This program encourages farmers to be good stewards of the environment using smart, sustainable agricultural practices while maximizing their yields.
