Biological MBL Discovery in Woods Hole WELCOME

Bringing the Best Together

The MBL has always been an intellectual crossroads: a place where the best students and most creative scientists from around the world gather to do some of their most exciting work. Many have used, as model systems, the marine and aquatic organisms found in nearby waters.

The MBL is also a place for discovery, where entire fields of study—neurobiology, nurtured and developed. Today our scientists are charting new directions embryology, cell biology, and environmental sciences, for example—have been in biological discovery that span studies ranging from microbial genomics to regenerative biology to coastal resiliency.

This weekend marks another important milestone as we welcome our UChicago and Argonne colleagues to Woods Hole for the second in a series of joint retreats. Although not yet the start of the explosive summer season and the arrival of hundreds of visiting scientists, course faculty, and students, you will be able to see firsthand what much of the MBL is all about. Over the next few days we will continue for the future of research and education at our institutions. the conversation that began in Chicago this winter about what our affiliation means Thank you for your commitment to this important effort. I invite everyone to think boldly this weekend, and to imagine future collaborations and discoveries that would only be possible because of our new partnership.

— Joan V. Ruderman, President and Director, MBL
