Williamson’s quilts. Jean, who has lived at Lake Waccamaw for many years, comes from a long line of women gifted in the needle arts. This exhibit has items used and created by the hearts and hands of many of these women, and includes some by her daughters as well. Jean does most of her quilting by hand, whereas her busy daughters use machines. They have obviously inherited their mother’s artistic skills and love of quilting. The two display windows also show off some antique sewing items such as a toy sewing machine (circa 1879) used by Jean’s grandmother as well as several thimbles and pincushions, some handmade. This exhibit can be enjoyed during regular library hours — Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., until Oct. 30. Don’t miss Jean’s special one-day exhibit at the Reuben Brown House in Whiteville where some of the same pieces will be displayed in full, and other larger quilts, some recently created, will be hung during the N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival in early November. The Reuben Brown House is one of seven historical build- ings and homes on the Pecan Festival’s annual Tour of Homes on Friday, Nov. 2. “Charleston Basket” (applique with a ruched rose of Jean’s own design) (Story and quilt arrangement by Becky Marlin; photos by Vern Marlin)
