ROCK Consulting Botanist, Board of Agriculture and Forestry HONOLULU: HAWAIIAN GAZETTE CO., LTD. 1913 ALPHABETICAL LIST OF HAWAIIAN NAMES OF PLANTS. The following list of Hawaiian plant-names has been compiled from various sources. Hillebrand in his valuable Flora of the Hawaiian Islands has given many Hawaiian names, especially of the more common species; these are incorporated in this list with a few corrections. Nearly all Hawaiian plant-names found in this list and not in Hillebrand's Flora were secured from Mr. Francis Gay of the Island of Kauai, an old resident in this Terri tory and well acquainted with its plants from a layman's stand point. It was the writer's privilege to camp with Mr. Gay in the mountains of Kauai collecting botanical material; for almost every species he could give the native name, which he had se cured in the early days from old and reliable natives. Mr. Gay had made spatter prints of many of the native plants in a large record book with their names and uses, as well as their symbolic meaning when occurring in mele (songs) or olioli (chants), at tached to them. For all this information the writer is indebted mainly to Mr. Francis Gay and also to Mr. Augustus F. Knudsen of the same Island. The writer also secured Hawaiian names from old na tives and Kahunas (priests) in the various islands of the group. -

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY We conducted Variable Circular Plot surveys for Nihoa Millerbird (Acrocephalus familiaris) and the Nihoa Finch (Telespiza ultima) 23-28 September 2013 at 60 points. There were 270 Millerbird and 569 Nihoa Finch detections, with a range of 0 - 6 and 1 - 9 respectively. The detection rate of Millerbirds increased sharply between 2012 and 2013, suggesting there might have been an increase in this species. Conversely, the detection rate of Nihoa Finches declined, suggesting this species might have declined. The U.S. Geological Survey Biological Resources Division is completing a report that will compare population estimates from the distance-based strip-transect and variable circular plot methods performed in 2012. Six banded Nihoa Millerbirds were resighted. Fourteen seabird species were observed on Nihoa and 13 of the 14 were nesting or had fledglings. Three species of migratory shorebirds were observed. Fifteen native plant species were found and appeared healthy. A total of 25 grey bird locusts (Schistocerca nitens) were observed during passerine surveys. A single non-native sandbur (Cenchrus echinatus) was detected and removed. The plant was located down slope from Cluster 2, about 100 meters above our campsite, with a little bit of green growth still present. -

GILMARTIN' ABSTRACT: Most births of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, Monuchus schuuinslundi, occur in specific beach areas in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Data collected from 1981 to 1988 on the locations of monk seal births and of the first sightings of neonatal pups were summarized to identify preferred birth and nursery habitats. These areas are relatively short lengths of beach at the breeding islands and have some common characteristics, of which the pri- mary feature is very shallow water adjacent to the shoreline. This feature, which limits access by large sharks to the water used by mother-pup pairs during the day, should enhance pup survival. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) have high conservation value due to their concentration of endemic, endangered and threatened spe- cies, and large numbers of nesting seabirds. Most of these islands are low-lying and therefore poten- tially vulnerable to increases in global average sea level. We explored the potential for habitat loss in the NWHI by creating topographic models of several islands and evaluating the potential effects of sea level rise by 2100 under a range of basic passive flooding scenarios. Projected terrestrial habitat loss varied greatly among the islands examined: 3 to 65% under a median scenario (48 cm rise), and 5 to 75% under the maximum scenario (88 cm rise). Spring tides would probably periodically inun- date all land below 89 cm (median scenario) and 129 cm (maximum scenario) in elevation. Sea level is expected to continue increasing after 2100, which would have greater impact on atolls such as French Frigate Shoals and Pearl and Hermes Reef, where virtually all land is less than 2 m above sea level. -

Panelists will discuss: How these institutions survived during COVID-19, what they will be doing in the future to ensure their survival and how they promote and support conservation efforts in Hawai'i. HCC is an excellent opportunity to showcase how Hawaii's largest aquaria and museums play a huge role in building awareness of the public in our biocultural diversity both locally and globally, and how the vicarious experience of biodiversity that is otherwise rarely or never seen by the normal person can be appreciated, documented, and researched, so we know the biology, ecology and conservation needs of our native biocultural diversity. Questions about how did COVID-19 affect these amazing institutions and how has COVID-19 forced an internal examination and different ways of working in terms of all of the in-house work that often falls to the side against fieldwork, and how it strengthened the data systems as well as our virtual expression of biodiversity work when physical viewing became hampered. -
Native Plants of Midway Atoll NWR U.S
Native Plants of Midway Atoll NWR U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Report by John Klavitter, Honolulu, HI, December 22, 2006. In the past, at least 37 native plant species have occurred at Midway. Currently, 20 native species (6 endemic, 1 species of concern) occur on the Refuge and at least 15 (9 endemic) have been extirpated and 2 (both endemic) are thought to be extinct. Lepterus repens (ind) Psuedognaphalium sandwicensium Lepterus (nwm), Wagner et al. 1999 ‘Ena’ena (end, nwm) One endemic palm from Molokai is also present, but not included in Midway’s native plant species count. The total number of species (native and non-native) recorded from Midway is 354 with a total of 264 being present during the last major botanical survey between April and June 1999 (Starr and Martz 1999). The Refuge hopes to reintroduce Achyranthes atollensis (end) appropriate extirpated plants back to Lepidium bidentatum var. o-wahihiense (end) Note: A. splendens shown above Midway within the next 2 years and 'Anaunau (nw) (rei from Laysan 2005) (E, nw, ext), Wagner et al. 1999 proposes using seeds to avoid accidental alien species introductions.
