The State of Fossil Fuel Divestment in Canadian Post-secondary Institutions Post-secondary institutions have a critical role to play as agents of change in moving society towards greater sustainability (Stephens et al, 2008), as well as have the potential to become exemplary leaders in the larger climate justice movement. This synopsis outlines the state of the high education fossil fuel divestment movement, with a particular focus on Canadian post-secondary institutions. It was written by Naomi Maina, PhD Researcher, with The Sustainability and Education Policy Network (SEPN). It is part of a larger ongoing research study being conducted by SEPN to evaluate sustainability uptake in Canadian formal education. The study is also interested in what relations may exist between post-secondary institutions that have high sustainability initiative (SI) scores (Beveridge et al., 2014), and their involvement in the divestment movement. “If it is wrong to wreck the climate, then it is wrong to profit from that wreckage:” This is the principle behind the divestment movement, which has gained momentum in the United States, Canada, and internationally since its inception in fall 2012 (gofossilfree.org). Initiated by Bill McKibben, co-founder of 350.org, the grassroots divestment movement calls upon higher education institutions, churches, cities, non-profit organizations, and individuals to divest their holdings from the top 200 most polluting fossil fuel companies. To date, a total of $50 billion has been divested by at least 181 institutions and local governments across the world (Arabella Advisors, n.d.). Figure 1 shows a breakdown of the amount divested by each sector. -

Some 5,000 Doukhobours fleeing persecution in Czarist Russia made a brief stop in the port before proceeding to their ultimate destination in the Canadian West. In spite of the brevity of their stay, a number of Haligonians boarded the vessel to express their good wishes. A lawyer deputed by a workmen's association to address the throng spoke through an interpreter, but his speech did not contain the clichs usually retailed on such occasions. You bring to Canada something more needed in this country than new immigrants - men who will stand by their principles no matter how much suffering it costs them. -

Grant The eleven degree-granting institutions in Nova Scotia represent a variety of sys- tems and traditions of academical costume. By 1807, the University of King’s Col- lege (1789), the oldest university in Nova Scotia, borrowed the academical dress of Oxford University,1 while l’Université Sainte-Anne, where the use of cap, toge, and épitoge is comparatively recent, is in the tradition of French and Quebec-based institutions.2 Several schools, including St Mary’s University, St Francis Xavier University, Mount St Vincent University, and the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, follow the rules of the Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume as developed in the United States in the 1890s.3 Other schools follow the ‘Canadian tradition’ of academical dress that Humphries describes.4 It could be argued, however, that this was, and is, in fact, a trans-Atlantic mi- gration of the British academical tradition. -

Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." The free and democratic society which the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms holds out as our ideal can only be fulfilled by honouring and preserving Canada’s traditions of freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of association, other individual rights, constitutionally limited government, the equality of all citizens before the law, and the rule of law. And yet these core principles of freedom and equality continue to be eroded by governments and by government-funded and government-created entities like Canada’s public universities, and human rights commissions at the federal and provincial levels. The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) was founded for the purpose of advancing and promoting the core principles of freedom and equality through education and litigation. The JCCF is a registered charity (charitable registration number 817174865-RR0001) and issues official tax receipts to donors for donations of $50 or more. The JCCF is funded entirely by the voluntary donations of freedom-minded Canadians who agree with the Centre’s goals, mission, vision and activities. The centre is independent and non-partisan, and receives no funding from any government or government organization.
