Smart card technology allows multiple applications to co-exist on a single IC (integrated circuit) card. SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX Features and Benefits of Smart Card Technology • The ability to use a single card for multiple applications has many benefits – Cardholders only need to carry one card – There are lower card costs because one card supports many applications – By using the default industry standard more applications can be more readily added SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX Features and Benefits of Smart Card Technology – All applications operate totally independently of each other – The security of smart card ensures the integrity of each application cannot be breached. “Contactless smart cards will be the key to people’s mobility in the future.” Source: Philips Semiconductors “Worldwide Applications for MIFARE Technology” February 1998 SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX Contactless smart cards • There are contact and contactless smart cards • Contactless smart cards – Have a longer MTBF (mean time before failure) than the contact option. – Use RF technology which means that there is no physical connection made. – RF technology also means there are no moving parts SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX Contactless smart cards Contactless smart cards offer more reliable long term operation than contact smart cards. SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX MIFARE? MIFARE? is a smart card technology developed by Philips. ? MIFARE is a registered trademark of Philips Electronics N.V. SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX MIFARE? The MIFARE? Architecture Platform has become the worldwide standard for contactless smart cards – It meets the ISO standard14443, type A, for contactless smart cards. – “MIFARE? has proven its reliability with more than 2.5 billion transactions carried out over the last four years”. ? Source: Philips Semiconductors “Worldwide Applications for MIFARE Technology” February 1998 SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX Worldwide Applications MIFARE? has already been applied to: – Public transport sector – Airline ticketing – Access control – Identity cards – Road toll collection schemes – Multi-function for military (identity card, access control card, meal card and for purchases; computer access may be added in future) – Stored value applications – Banking cards SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX MIFARE? There are three MIFARE? options available: – MIFARE? Light – MIFARE? Standard – MIFARE? Pro SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX MIFARE? Light MIFARE? Light is designed for a single application. It is specifically dedicated for use as a ‘just contactless’ travelpass, phone card or in gaming applications. SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX MIFARE? Standard MIFARE? Standard is designed to support up to 15 securely separated applications together with a MIFARE Application Directory (MAD). It has commonly been used as a ‘just contactless’ travelpass. Further applications have included access control, road toll, park and ride, airline ticketing, customer loyalty or ID cards. SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX MIFARE? Standard SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX MIFARE? Pro MIFARE? Pro meets advanced security and convenience requirements by providing microcontroller functionality via the contactless (or contact) interface. It is ideally suited to combining a major financial application in conjunction with other smart card applications. SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX MIFARE? Pro SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX Meeting Business Requirements To meet the requirement of EFTPOS through the banking system, MIFARE? Pro would be the most suitable option. SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX Meeting Business Requirements To achieve this: • The bank supplies the MIFARE Pro smart cards and develops the EFTPOS application • The bank provides all relevant key data to enable Cardax to add access control onto the smart cards This can be achieved without compromising the security of the EFTPOS application. SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX Meeting Business Requirements If the bank is reluctant to include other applications on their smart card, there is another option ... exclude EFTPOS from the requirements and include all applications on Cardax Smart Cards. SMART CARD GET SMART, GET CARDAX Cardax Smart Card Solutions Cardax has selected Philips Semiconductors contactless Standard MIFARE? technology to provide the platform for its Smart Card range.
