Our Franchise team, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins, had shown a sense of maturity and commitment. We reached two finals and ended up joint winners in one format. Both our provincial teams had successful seasons which saw both Coastal and Inland win competitions. In the past season the Kwazulu Natal Cricket Union continued to produce players for the national pipeline. The highlights were 5 Protea players, 4 SA “A” players, 3 SA Academy players, 2 SA U/19 players and 1 SA women’s team player. With regards to the CSA scorecard, we ended up as the most improved member, which took us to third overall. We were also first in governance, first in Youth cricket administration and first in the Hubs program. In true teaching parlance, I am going to say the following: The Kwazulu Natal Cricket Union had performed admirably throughout the past season, however, I still believe that the Kwazulu Natal Cricket Union has the ability to perform even better. There is room for improvement. 'S This can only be achieved by developing and nurturing our homegrown talent. Our academy continues to produce stars for the future and competes with the best in the country. The various teams that we have, have adopted an attitude of a winning culture. The desire to play for and perform for the Dolphins and our amateur teams has become great. All our players now MESSAGE believe that it is not your right to play for us but an honour. Our badge has meaning and it has purpose. To all our coaches, I must congratulate you and say thank you. However, hard work, dedication, perseverance, consistency and self-reflection breeds success. Club cricket remains a challenge and we need to take a hard look at what Club cricket has to offer. All clubs have felt the economic pinch and unfortunately Club cricket cannot survive without the injection of money. Sponsorships for club cricket has become harder to come by. The advent of semi-professional club cricketers has brought about the demise of some of our older clubs. This is a phenomenon experienced throughout the country. Clubs need to invest in good junior structures which will ensure a future. This is where you can ensure your longevity. We have introduced an exciting initiative, a commercially local based franchise competition, the Dolphins Premier League, which should encourage new sponsors to come on board and at the same time give club players the opportunity to play the game at another level. Our Township program continues to grow, and our festival was a resounding success once again. The standard of cricket played was unbelievable. Three SA U/19 players have emerged from this program. 5 PAGE KZN CRICKET UNION 2017/18 ANNUAL REPORT In a mission to ensure the sustainability of our development pipeline we need to merge it with the formal CSA recognized programs. CSA has incorporated an activity-based funding model and with our current structure we are losing out on funding. We spend more than 4 million rand on the program besides what we get from our two major sponsors, The Department of Sport and Recreation and The Willowton Group on the program. It is still a concern of mine to note that areas such as Asherville, Overport, Sydenham, Merebank and Phoenix no longer have school cricket, let alone mini-cricket. The Union and the Schools committees must commit to re-introducing cricket into these once thriving cricket areas. These areas were once the hub of non-racial cricket and are steeped in cricket history. I must acknowledge that our High schools and Primary Schools Boards continue to strive and work hard in trying circumstances to promote the game of cricket. I must congratulate the presidents of all our Geo-political districts for ensuring that the mandates of their sub- unions were adhered to and that cricket in their respective areas continued to be played. On the operational side, our Chief executive Heinrich Strydom, with the help of his senior managers continues to strive for excellence. He has continued to nudge, push and coerce the staff into giving of their best at all times. Our policies are continuously being updated, respected and adhered too. All our policies need to tie up with good practices and good governance. MESSAGE Our stadium continues to undergo renovations. This must continue to ensure that we become a stadium to be reckoned with. We are beginning to generate more income by hiring out the stadium. It is unfortunate that The Comrades Marathon and the The Spar Women’s race 'S organizations no longer use our stadium. This has resulted in us losing over a million rand in revenue. Our Finco members must be complimented for the manner in which they have gone about taking care of our finances. Financially we are sound. We have solid investments. They, in conjunction with the auditors, are going to ensure that we introduce more stringent measures to curb expenditure. The PTY relationship with Supersport is a sound one and continues to grow. Supersport continues to be supportive of our Union. Our sponsorship deal with Hollywoodbets has been renewed. The Department of Sport and Recreation and Sunfoil continue to be the sponsors of our Township program. To all our sponsors, I want to say Thank You to you for your commitment and contribution towards the promoting and the funding of cricket in our province. Cricket South Africa is financially stable. The president of Cricket South Africa, Chris Nenzani, has ensured that CSA has again become a leading contributor at the ICC. We, as an affiliate, in turn must continue to play an important role at CSA. Now, all the attention is focused on the Global T20 that is destined to be launched in November this year. PRESIDENT 6 PAGE KZN CRICKET UNION 2017/18 ANNUAL REPORT PRESIDENT To the HLVP’s and patrons that I have approached on the many occasions for sound advice and guidance, regarding ideas and thoughts through some tough times, has not gone by unnoticed. Your knowledge, experience, wisdom, guidance and expertise has helped me tremendously. Thank you! Lastly, credit must be given to all the Office Bearers, all Manco and all Council members for the manner in which our deliberations were conducted. It was good to have healthy debate and it was also good to listen. We must continue to be true to ourselves and honest with each other. Cricket must always be the main objective. To my successor, congratulations and well done. Thank you Fa-eez Jaffar President KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union 'S MESSAGE 7 PAGE KZN CRICKET UNION 2017/18 ANNUAL REPORT 8 PAGE KZN CRICKET UNION 2017/18 ANNUAL REPORT INTRODUCTION The past year has flown by and when I look back I cannot help but be filled with a sense of pride of what we have achieved as a Union. On a personal note it meant the creation of a new life in KZN and the birth of an immense pride in a province with such incredible potential and hope for the future. When I reflect on the past season I am filled with gratitude and a true sense of belonging to something much bigger than myself. As the Dolphins franchise our core business of cricket has performed well, with incredible performances throughout the KZN pipeline, the pinnacle being the positive brand of cricket played by the Hollywoodbets Dolphins. We won three out of a possible six senior cricket trophies available in the national competitions, and what makes this achievement even more special is that the three included one by each senior team in each of the three formats – Hollywoodbets Dolphins (Momentum 50 over), KZN Coastal (Sunfoil 3-day) and KZN Inland (Africa CEO REPORT T20). These positive results played a massive role in our players and coaches being recognised for national honours. At Proteas level Keshav Maharaj, Andile Phehlukwayo, Imran Tahir and Chloe Tryon made key contributions Our head coach, Grant Morgan has been selected as assistant coach for the SA ”A” team to India, along with captain Khaya Zondo, SJ Erwee, Senuran Muthusamy and Robbie Frylinck.
