VOL. 120 - NO. 33 BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, AUGUST 12, 2016 $.35 A COPY 2016 Olympics National Night Out in the North End Michael Phelps with game face on! Despite a few disappointments here and there, the US Olympic Team has been, as expected, tremendously successful in Rio thus far. As of Wednesday afternoon, the US leads the medal count with 27 — ten ahead of closest competitor China, and almost double 3rd place Japan, which has won mostly bronze hardware. The US also leads in gold medals, with the powerful Swim Team contributing seven of the total ten so far. In fact, the Swim Team has won 18 of the 27 US medals collected to date. (Michael Phelps has a couple of those seven golds, and it has been reported that his career total of 21 gold medals exceeds the Summer Olympics gold medal total of 175 of the countries competing in Rio!) Meanwhile, the “Final Five” Women’s Gymnastics Team (so named because At-Large City Councillor Annissa Essaibi-George (left), Mayor Martin Walsh (center), City it is coordinator Márta Károlyi’s last Olympics and also because Councillor Sal LaMattina and Commissioner William Evans (far right) along with members of the teams will be reduced to four gymnasts in the next Summer Boston Police District A-1. Olympics) has won the Team gold and is poised to rack up a few Individual golds this week. GO USA! News Briefs by Sal Giarratani Trump Must Like Getting Set-Up At their convention, the Democrats introduced a Muslim couple who talked about the sacrifi ce their son made for America when he died in battle trying to save others. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his heroism. Good strategy by the Dems. Then the dad of the fallen soldier goes on to attack Trump, calling him a “black soul’ and offers up his copy of the Constitution for Trump to read. Trump should have just let the father speak, but he decided to attack these Gold Star parents, which is a no-no. I heard Trump being interviewed by Bill O’Reilly, and Bill tried to give Trump a chance to take State Rep. Aaron Michlewicz, City Councillor Sal back his actions and words, but Trump wouldn’t back LaMattina and State Senator Joe Boncore down. He let the Democrats set him up, then easily fell into their trap. You don’t have to fi re back all the National Night Out in the Sal.
