The Tuesday Afternoon Bible Study - Acts 23 Acts 21-28 encompass several years, covering a long period of time in which Paul is always in captivity. Chapters 21-23 tell the first episode in this period, where Paul’s life is threatened three times. Paul has returned to Jerusalem, where so long ago (back in ch 8) he launched his persecution again Christians. Paul’s presence in the temple causes an angry mob to seize him, bringing Roman soldiers to keep the peace, and thus saving him. When the soldiers learn that Paul is a Roman citizen, this allows him a favored status. Allowed to speak to the Jews, in ch 22 Paul offers his defense. After his speech, the Roman tribune in charge wants to understand more about these charges leveled against Paul by the Jews. He orders Paul to speak before Jerusalem’s high-ranking Jewish leaders (sometimes referred to by the Greek word for council, Sanhedrin.) Ch 23 tells of this next encounter. (Hint: it won’t end well.) Let’s read ch 23 in three sections, answering questions after reading each section. Acts 23: 1-11 Read all of Paul’s speech before this gathered body of Jewish leaders. 1. Speaking truth to power is dangerous and can result in injury. Paul starts with a statement about his long-standing faithfulness to the God of Israel. This results in an order by the high priest, Ananias, for Paul to be struck on the mouth. This is the third person named Ananias we encounter in Acts - all 3 are different persons, and the first time we encounter this one. -

A critical reaction to Bauck ham's theory on the universality of the Gospels The aim of this paper is to evaluate the article by Ricluud Bauckluun, in which he challenges the current consensus in New Testament scho/Qrship that the gospels were written for and addressed to specific believing communities. The thesis that Bauckluun puts forward is that the gospels were written with the intention of being circuUlted as widely as possible - it was written for every Christian community of the Ulte first century where the gospels might circuUlte. First, a Wirkungs geschichte of Mark's gospel in terms of the possible localities of origin and the possible theological intentions for writing the Gospel, that is, of the results of the current consensus in New Testament scholarship, is given. Three times in sermons, or speeches that he gave, the Apostle Paul wasn’t allowed to say any more after mentioning the resurrection of the dead. In ACTS 17 during his sermon on Mars hill, we read this concerning Paul preaching about Jesus: 31 ..whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he bath raised him from the dead 32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter. 33 So Paul departed from among them. We see here that the majority in Athens didn’t want to here the message about resurrected Jesus Christ. Again before the Sanhedrin council in ACTS 23:6 Paul’s final words he was allowed to speak unto them were: ...Men and brethren, 1 am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. 7 And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided. 8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both. 9 And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisee? part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God. -

KISTEMAKER Reformed Theological Seminary Jackson, MS 39209 About half of the Book of Acts consists of speeches, discourses, and letters. Counting both the short and the long addresses, we number at least 26 speeches that are made by either apostles and Christian leaders or by non-Christians (Jews and Gentiles). Classifying these speeches, we have eight addresses delivered by Peter,1 a lengthy sermon of Stephen before the Sanhedrin (7:2-53), a brief explanation by Cornelius (10:30-33), a short address by James at the Jerusalem Council (15:13- 21), the advice to Paul by James and the elders in Jerusalem (21:20-25), and nine sermons and speeches by Paul.2 The rest of the discourses were given by Gamaliel the Pharisee (5:35-39), Demetrius the silver- smith (19:25-27), the city clerk in Ephesus (19:35-40), Tertullus the lawyer (24:2-8), and Festus the governor (25:24-27).3 In addition, Luke relays the text of two letters: one from the Jerusalem Council to the Gentile churches (15:23-29), and the other written by Claudius Lysias addressed to Governor Felix (23:27-30). DBSJ 22 (2017): 57–73 THE CONTINUATION OF NEW TESTAMENT PROPHECY AND A CLOSED CANON: REVISITING WAYNE GRUDEM’S TWO LEVELS OF NT PROPHECY by Bruce Compton1 INTRODUCTION A key sticking point that continues to divide evangelicals is the question over the cessation versus the continuation of New Testament prophecy.2 At the heart of the debate are the issues of a closed canon and the New Testament’s role as the final rule for faith and practice. A number of evangelicals posit two levels of prophecy: an apostolic level that is inerrant and divinely authoritative and a non-apostolic level that is neither. As we examined this last text (Acts 21:1-17) we learned of the four warnings God gave the apostle through the Holy Ghost. He was specifically told not to go up to Jerusalem, for if he did, the result would be afflictions and incarceration. But, because of his heartfelt ____________________ for his Jewish brethren, he ignored God’s warnings and pressed on in his own endeavor to the city. Today we will see the historic narrative describe the course of events as they unfolded for Paul in Jerusalem and witness the fulfillment of his foretold turmoil. Even though this message is more of a commentary on the events, we will do well to pay close attention to every detail as God’s Spirit seeks to reveal issues surrounding our own _______________ endeavors for Christ. 1.
