Carroll is a leading figure within the Chaos Magic movement. Along with 'The New Equinox" publisher and writer Ray Sherwin, Carroll is widely considered to be the originator of Chaos Magic as an independent field of exploration. Carroll and Sherwin created a loosely organized group called the Illuminates of Thanateros. In 1995, Carroll announced his desire to step down from the "roles of magus and pontiff of chaos". This statement was originally delivered at the same IOT international meeting which Carroll discussed in an article titled "The Ice War" in Chaos International. In 2005, he appeared as a chaos magic instructor at Maybe Logic Academy at the request of , and later founded Arcanorium Occult College with other known chaos magicians on staff including , and Jaq D. Hawkins. This experience reawoke his interest in the subject of magic and he has since announced another book on the subject. Carroll writes columns for Chaos International magazine currently edited by Ian Read under the names Peter Carroll and Stokastikos, his magical name within the Pact. Peter James Carroll ( born 8 January 1953, in Patching, England ) is a modern occultist, author, cofounder of the Illuminates of Thanateros, and practitioner of chaos magic theory. Carroll's 1987 book Liber Null & Psychonaut is considered one of the defining works of the chaos magic movement. I like his move of trying to justify CMT on grounds of theoretical physics-- his math is woefully underdone here, but the math on his website carries onward where this book fails. The first portion of the book textbookily answers the question: "How does magic actually work? It pulls explanations from chaos theory and some other scientific models, which paradoxically adds and subtracts to the existential nature of it's predecessor. The middle portion of the book introduces a color magic system that corresponds to the eight points of the chaos star. It may contradict the anti-dogmatic themes of Liber Null, but I feel like it is made understood that this is Carroll's system and you may apply it as you see fit. The final portion of the book is instruction to the reader on how to start your own local chaos temple, and also rituals for the initiate. The book does feel like more of a "manual" than any other of Peter J. Carroll's books, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't hold to psychologically freeform ideas. Jan 09, Felix rated it liked it Recommends it for: any serious student of magick. Shelves: occult. This book is in parts truly excellent - and should be essential reading for students of the 'arte magickal'. Some other parts of the book perhaps less important ones, really are much weaker - and make lots of sense but probably are only really useful if you already know what the author is talking about However - well worth reading for the good bits - and there are some very good bits. Jan 25, Timm added it Shelves: exemplum-stupendous-curriculum. One of the best technical manuals on magick yet created. Carroll is one of the minds behind the rise of Chaos Magick. This book is a refreshing dose out of the standard mythic embedded occult offerings. Nov 12, Constantin rated it liked it Shelves: occult-related. In a single word Mehhh In more words, If you are new to Carroll's books, then this book is a good introduction and has some nice information in it to catch your interest. If you have read other works by Carroll, then you realise that every single book is a plagiarism of his other books. Literally, every book is almost identical, says the same things on the same subjects with the same advice, just in sort of different words. It feels like "limbo" for books. Also, every single one of the books is In a single word Also, every single one of the books is an entry-level information, and the rituals mentioned in this one are ridiculous! Only gave it 3 stars because it would be a good starting point for a beginner and due to the fact that it has paragraphs that are good food for thought. Mar 14, Mychole Price rated it really liked it Shelves: spiritual-progress. Great book to refresh the magickal knowledge already has. Definitely retro in presentation. Apr 01, M. Stern rated it it was amazing. This book serves to provide greater clarity to Chaos magic as a concept compared to Liber Null and provides a great overview of the methodology behind the practice. A fascinating read. Nov 01, Justin rated it liked it. As a beginner, this was way above my head. May 02, Ankhie Weiser is currently reading it. Join us! Aug 06, Lindsey rated it really liked it. An excellent description of Chaos Theory used as a magical theory. And this stuff works. Feb 21, Pamela rated it liked it. When I read it, it blew my mind. I've read a lot since tho, so it's hard to remember my first impression. There's not enough out there about mathemagics tho, so I think it still holds it's place as an important read. Jan 10, Aaron Meyer rated it really liked it Shelves: occult. I remember when this book came out it was like the hottest thing out there. As far as Chaos Magic goes this is one of the essential books to have on the shelf. It gives theory, philosophy and practices that are essential for the practitioner. Oddly enough, it's not my favorite book on Chaos Magic. May 09, Sighris rated it really liked it Shelves: magick. Available for free on-line The theory on how the IOT should work. Jun 04, Terra Bosart rated it really liked it. One of the first books on magic that didn't talk down to me, and also didn't use a great deal of flowery language. It inspired me to analyze my perspectives, and begin practice again. Jan 07, Al Terry rated it it was amazing. Very informative open ended view of magic stripped almost entirely of dogma. Carroll about Kaos Magick, which details an advanced magickal training course. There are actually two parts to Liber Kaos. The first is called "Liber Kaos" while the second part is titled "The Psychonomicon." The book also has some appendices, of additional material. The book, in the first part, describes something it calls Quantum Metaphysics, as well as describing Chaos Magic Theory. This is really the understanding that quantum mechanics and fractal chaos are important when combined, and that the "attractor" in chaos theory is the same principle which causes quanta to arrange the way they do (though, the book doesn't say this). The book adds a dimension of mathematics and science to the practice of magick. The book also describes the cycling of the aeons (as the idea "Aeonics") and how things will undoubtedly return to Kaos. (see also The Five Stages of Chaos) Magick cannot be supressed indefinitely, and for life to flow, so must the ages flow, and Carroll postulates in his book a "psychohistoric mechanism of the Aeons", where beliefs in different times may move through different stages, and that a "Pandemon" aeon will soon appear, based on Chaoist beliefs. Also explained, to some degree, are the eight magicks (which is in a sense related to the eight major sects of Miriad). These eight magicks are described as different colors of magick. Octarine, or Pure magick, is the drive towards magick, but in essence it is the understanding of the other 7 magicks. Black magick, which is the principle of death magick, is close to what may be termed Entropy magick. This article is a stub. You can help the Miriadic Wiki by expanding it. Liber Kaos by Peter J. Carroll. And so, my quest to understand magical theory continues with another volume on Chaos Magic. I gained a great deal of insight and clarity from Carroll’s prior book, Liber Null & Psychonaut . The present work under review, published five years later, has turned out to be not so valuable. We begin with heady material on quantum theory from a magical perspective. The majority of this was beyond me, but what I could understand struck me as far too theoretical to place any real confidence in – the idea that magic, which has its roots in the transcendent, can be reduced to a few equations. I don’t buy it. Carroll also makes the startling claim that there was no singularity at the beginning of the universe. He states that no matter when you exist in time, the universe always gives the appearance of being fifteen billion years old. This claim is in stark opposition to what we appear to observe about the motions of galaxies, and what we know of gravitation. The problem, Carroll maintains, is that we are approaching the issue from a classical perspective. There may be something to what Carroll is saying, but I confess I am not up to the task of debating the ins and outs of quantum theory. Next we have some material on aeonics. Carroll claims that all philosophical worldviews fit one of three basic paradigms: materialistic, magical, and transcendental. The ebb and flow of these paradigms throughout history is reduced to a line graph that shows a definite cyclic pattern, as the world moves through aeons called shamanic, religious, rationalist and pandemon – the latter being the one that is allegedly emerging. It’s all very interesting, but unconvincing. There was plenty of rationality going round in the days of the ancient Greek philosophers, and there has been plenty of religion in the two and a half millennia since. There’s no doubt that Carroll has done a lot of homework, but his “psychohistory model” of aeonics appears fanciful at best. The decline and growth of our various worldviews is a product of consciousness, and consciousness will not be turned into a deterministic line graph that we have no control over. We are not automatic machines. When Carroll turns to practical magic, that’s when the book takes a shift in a much more positive direction. He introduces a delightful phrase, “sleight of mind,” and explains it at length – as the key to effective magic. In my own experience with psionics, I can affirm that success requires a mind that is distracted from the task you wish to perform. You have to play a little mental trick with yourself to, for instance, accomplish a successful act of psychokinesis. Terms like “psychic censor” and “sleight of mind” are useful in understanding the inner workings of magic, but a good portion of the book is also concerned with building new a system of magic, full of pointless new terms – as if the world needs yet another. Magic is divided into eight categories (seemingly for no other reason than the Chaos symbol has eight arrows). These are: octarine (pure magic), black (death magic), blue (wealth magic), green (love magic), yellow (ego magic), purple or silver (sex magic), orange (thinking magic), red (war magic). My question is: why? All these categories are arbitrary and artificial. It’s fine to break magic down like this for the purpose of talking about particular applications of magic in the practical sphere. But there is no benefit whatsoever to memorising this jargon as some kind of fundamentally meaningful system. Magic comes from that fuzzy non-dual transcendence from which everything springs. It isn’t truly eightfold in any sense outside of the author’s personal subjective preferences. , , enchantment, , illumination, sorcery, shamanic magic, ritual magic, astral magic, high magic. In my opinion, there’s a lot of pointless vocabulary being held up as important. And if that’s not enough, we have to contend with “sorcery invocation,” “shamanic enchantment,” “ritual evocation,” and a plethora of other allegedly meaningful combinations. The book closes with some appendices that are mostly concerned with the administration of the organisation, the Illuminates of Thanateros (also known as The Pact). The material was of no value to me other than to reinforce the pointlessness of such semi-secretive groups. I had high hopes for this book. Sadly, I have to report that I was able to extract only a few morsels of usable insight.
