Native vegetation mapping in the Blue Mountains 1999-2002 Blue Mountains City Council 0 1. INTRODUCTION Ecological Surveys & Planning Pty Ltd (ESP) was engaged by Blue Mountains City Council to map the native vegetation of Planning Areas 1 to 5. This area comprises all lands in Blue Mountains Local Government Area (LGA) other than those under the control of the NSW National Park & Wildlife Service (with the exception of the recently declared Yellomundee Regional Park). The boundaries of each of the Planning Areas have been determined by Council for planning and management purposes and are shown in Figure 1. Unlike the other Planning Areas, Area 1 was divided into 3 sections for ease of survey: The Mounts (basalt capped mountains and adjoining sandstone terrain in the north); Western Plateau (sandstone plateau and western escarpment from Medlow Bath to Bell); and Megalong Valley (Megalong Valley east of Cox’s River plus Shipley Plateau and the upper Kanimbla Valley). Bushland within the study area occurs mainly on vacant Crown land and to a lesser extent on Council- owned land, Sydney Catchment Authority properties associated with the provision of potable water, and substantial areas of freehold and leasehold, with the latter being most common in the largely rural Megalong Valley. The vegetation of the study area has been previously mapped within the 1:100,000 vegetation map sheet for Katoomba as published by Keith and Benson (1988), the 1:100,000 sheet for Penrith by Benson (1992), with Mount Irvine, parts of Mount Wilson and Bell being within the Wallerawang 1:100,000 vegetation sheet by Benson and Keith (1990). -

Tozer, Native vegetation of the Cumberland Plain 1 The native vegetation of the Cumberland Plain, western Sydney: systematic classification and field identification of communities Mark Tozer NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, PO Box 1967 Hurstville 2220, AUSTRALIA phone: (02) 9585 6496, fax.: (02) 9585 6606, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Twenty-two vascular plant communities occurring on, and adjacent to the Cumberland Plain and Hornsby Plateau, are defined using a multi-variate analysis of quantitative field survey data. Communities are described using structural features, habitat characteristics and diagnostic species. Diagnostic species are identified using a statistical fidelity measure. The pre–European spatial distribution of communities is estimated using a decision tree approach to derive relationships between community distribution and geological, climatic and topographical variables. Contemporary vegetation cover is estimated from 1:16 000 scale aerial photography (1997/98) and sorted into six categories based on cover of Eucalyptus species. These categories are only approximately related to vegetation condition: high Eucalyptus cover classes are most likely to contain high levels of floristic diversity, but areas with scattered cover or no cover at all may have either high or low diversity. Map accuracy is assessed using independent field samples and is primarily limited by the accuracy of 1:100 000 geological maps. Patterns in overstorey composition were mapped at 1:16 000 scale but were less useful in delineating community boundaries than was hoped because few species are confined to a single community. The extent to which observer bias may influence estimates of the present extent of remnant vegetation is investigated by comparing the interpretations of two observers for a subset of the study area. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract: The Southern Forests study area covers an area of about six million hectares of south-eastern New South Wales, south of Oberon and Kiama and east of Albury and Boorowa (latitude 33° 02’–37 ° 06’ S; longitude 146° 56’ – 147° 06’ E). The total area of existing vegetation mapped was three million hectares (3 120 400 hectares) or about 50% of the study area. Terrestrial, wetland and estuarine vegetation of the Southern Forests region were classified into 206 vegetation groups and mapped at a scale between 1: 25 000 and 1: 100 000. The classification was based on a cluster analysis of detailed field surveys of vascular plants, as well as field knowledge in the absence of field survey data. The primary classification was based on 3740 vegetation samples with full floristics cover abundance data. Additional classifications of full floristics presence-absence and tree canopy data were carried out to guide mapping in areas with few full floristic samples. The mapping of extant vegetation was carried out by tagging vegetation polygons with vegetation codes, guided by expert knowledge, using field survey data classified into vegetation groups, remote sensing, and other environmental spatial data. -

The assessment of World Heritage values is based on the criteria for World Heritage listing. CERRA was inscribed on the World Heritage list as a site with outstanding universal significance in terms of its natural heritage. The property satisfied three of the four possible criteria for the listing of a natural property. The criteria for World Heritage listing have changed since the listing of CERRA, but this has little effect on this review because the changes generally amount to a re-arrangement of themes within the criteria for which the property is listed. This review identifies attributes, which demonstrate the values under each criterion. Threats to these attributes are identified and the condition of integrity is assessed. World Heritage values Criterion (i): ‘be outstanding examples representing major stages of Earth’s history, including the record of life, significant on-going geological processes in the development of landforms, or significant geomorphic or physiographic features.’ Values related to this criterion and key attributes supporting these values are as follows. -

However, for thousands upon thousands of years, the stories in this book were used as a teaching tool to impart to the youngest members of the clans the laws which governed the cultural behaviour of clan members. The successive attempts to destroy the Koori culture and assimilate The People into the Euro-centric population were unsuccessful, and the Dreaming Stories were able to continue in their dis- guise as charming legends where animals became the heroes and the heroines. Historians and anthropologists have studied the Koori culture since they first arrived on this continent, and have come to the conclusion that the D’harawal culture is dead. Of, course, this has been done without reference to the descendants of that culture, and without even asking the proper questions. The D’harawal culture is not dead, it is a strong, living, vital culture of the Sydney and South Coast re- gions that just had to go underground for a while to be able to survive. Now that the right questions have been asked, we have the key to unlock a vast wealth of knowledge of this part of the country in which we live. -

It is the home of rare and threatened species of both plants and animals, and supports large areas of undisturbed vegetation communities that are considered to be a significant part of the ecological diversity of the region. Rainforests of great antiquity, towering stands of the iconic Blue Mountains Ash Eucalyptus oreades, endangered swamps of considerable hydrological significance and windswept Blue Mountains Heaths that cling to dramatic escarpments, thrive on the plateau and in its ravines and lower foothills. A significant number of Blue Mountains endemic plants and species classified as rare or threatened grow on the Radiata Plateau (Table 1). Some of the rare endemic plants like Sprengelia monticola and Acacia asparagoides retain a ROTAP classification from a system developed by the CSIRO and used prior to the legislation of several protective Government Acts. Other plants, vegetation communities and animals requiring special conservation measures have since been variously classified under the former NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (TSC Act), now the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (BC Act) and sometimes also by the Commonwealth’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Two Blue Mountains endemics listed as Endangered that have been recorded on Radiata are Pherosphaera fitzgeraldii (Microstrobos; Dwarf Mountain Pine) of just ten waterfall spray zones between there and Wentworth Falls, and Leionema lachnaeoides, a yellow star-flowered shrub of rocky heathland mostly found in small numbers between Katoomba and Blackheath.
