[there were some pages out of order here in The Eller Chronicles, If you jump from page 94 to page 107 then follow the page numbers backwards to page 96, then jump to page 108 and continue normally, the families seem to be in order. Thanks to this numbering system, it wasn't too dificult to follow.

- OR: take the sheets with page numbers 96 through 1 07, tu rn them over, and start at the old page number 107, and renumber from 96 to 107 and replace them in this reversed order. (107 becomes 96, 106 becomes 97, 105 becomes 98- 96 becomes 107) [ADE) Website Warning Above- Corrected in PDF • p. 2

(Note: See the wedding announcement below; we have sent congratulations to Klaus and Asta and assured them that all their EF A friends attending Conf '93 will be looking forward to the third visit from Klaus and the first visit of Asta).

"In my last letter I had mentioned the Eller street in Bonn. Meanwhile I found out that it had been named after a deputy mayor (in German= Beigeordneter) of the city ofBonn. I even found his tomb on the Old Cemetery ofBonn (where many famous tombs are still to be seen, like those of the composer Robert Schumann and the astronomer Argelander, Its inscription reads as follows: Peter Innocenz Eller, Beigeordneter der Stadt Bonn, 29. 3. 1818- 27. 4. 1893. I do not yet know where he was born and to which line he belongs, Because of the name of Innocenz it seems to me that he must have been roman catholic.

"Another recent discovery of mine is that Hans Eller from Berlin won a gold medal at the lOth Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932 (rowing: four with steersman). (Or did any body ofEFA know that already?)

"My mother's health has been restored satisfactorily, but she is getting weaker, of course, and her memory decreases. Next week she will become 94 years old!

"Today (March 15) our Institute's program of lectures and courses for the summer term 1993 modified in such a manner that my wife's duties will end upon July 13. So we intend to arrive at Portland on Wednesday, July 14, in the evening if there is a convenient flight."

Elsewhere in this issue appears the genealogy submitted by Klaus. With regard to the format scheme which he uses, he has this to say: "The entire system of descendency lettering appears to need explanation. I say "lettering" - and not "numbering" - and that is one difference of my system as compared to that to which Bill refers on p. 46 of the Feb. Chronicles (cf. p. 303 ofthe November Chronicles). The chief advantage of"my" system (in comparison with the latter) is that it is much easier to insert new results of further research; and I do hope that in the Eller research lots of new results are still to be expected. It is easy to show the disadvantages of the NGS system with the most recent example in the Chronicles, p. 18 of the Feb. 1993 issue: Let us say, you want to include the children of Chelsie Baird Eller (p. 20, Identifying number 15)! These children would belong to the eighth generation obviously. To this (8th) generation the Identifying

83 p. 19 Eller Chronicles Vol. VII (2) May 1993 numbers 44-121 are attributed, but no numbers are reserved for Chelsie Baird Eller•s children! As all the numbers until 243 are already reserved to other persons, there are two possibilities: they will either get numbers above 243 (which would correspond to the 11th generation!), or they get Identifying 11numbers 11 like 46a, 46b, 46c, etc; their children would get 128a, 128b, 128c, etc. And iffurther insertions become necessary, you will get aa, ab, ba, bb, cc, etc. I can show you German genealogies with thousands of persons, with such 11emergency numbers 11 which are therefore, very difficult to read (or rather: to understand). Thus, I should like to warn you with regard to such a system.

110n the other hand, 11my .. system allows continuous completion and inclusion of newly found persons - without any change of lettering. Imagine, Philipp Jacob Eller ( p. 13 of my list: AAC.F) had married, and the couple had children. They would simply get the symbols AAC. Fa (if a daughter), AAC.FB (if a son) and AAC. Fe (if another daughter), etc. The number of characters (letters) already indicates the generation, while a number like 91 in the NGS system does not necessarily indicate the generation (it does so , of course, only in the context ofthe page in question). And ..mi• system indictes the sex of all persons: a capital letter at the end signifies a male, and a small letter signifies a female person. I hope we shall be able to discuss further aspects at Portland ...

(Eds. We know the topic of 11numbering 11 or 11lettering 11 systems are not matters of great interest to EF A members unless they are involved in research. However, the subject is of considerable interest to us. For example, examine the first three genealogies in this issue. The first, by Kay Black, was reformatted by us from large charts submitted by Kay and then resubmitted to her for corrections and additions; this is what we refer to as the 11NGS 11 (National Genealogiy Society) system.

The second genealogy, by K. Napp-Zinn, utilizes his system just described above. Do not make the mistake of dismissing this system out of hand. It has several attractive features. Klaus is a professional botanist and is well versed in the task of using taxonomic keys to separate and identify plants of all species and place them in a logical and related sequence. Separating and identifying people and placing them in a logical and related sequence is a very similiar problem. We do not claim to understand all aspects of his system and we look forward to more discussions with him in Portland.

The third genealogy, submitted by James L. Correll, utilizes another numbering system.

11 We have entertained the thought oftrying to establish a single EFA system .. but doubt now the wisdom of any such effort because different compilers have their own preferences, and members of a given family line have learned the system used by the compiler of their own line and prefer that the same system be utilized in publications.

We have a recent example of this that illustrates the last point. which will appear in the August issue. A 34-page booklet on the George2 Eller (Christian1 Eller) line, published in 1918 and submitted to Bill Eller by Ma~orieMcCormick, was reformatted by us into

11 11 the NGS plan. We then learned that Ma~oriereally preferred that the book be reprinted in the Chronicles exactly as originally published. To conform to her wishes, the p. 20 Eller Chronicles Vol. VII (2) May 1993

publication will appear in the August issue in the same form as originally published. Also, we reformatted the James Madison Eller material before publishing it in the last issue from a booklet by Nora Eller of Wilkes County, NC. We now think we probably should have not have done so although we had the permission of the descendant who provided us the copy. So, casual readers, we hope you see that the matter of choosing a "numbering" system is quite significant in genealogical work and we intend in the future not to transgress the wishes of those who submit the material to us for publication in the Chronicles.)

Notes: 1) In the conventional system the generation number is listed first. In Napp-Zinn's system the generation number is equal to the number of letters preceding the name of the individual; the period in his system has no significnce beyond grouping generations into groups of three. 2) In the Napp-Zinn system ca1,italletters denote males and lower case letters denote females. 3) English translations by the author arc inserted above various German words and phrases.

ELLER: THE FAMILY NAME AND COAT OF ARMS

Thomas H. Eller, Jr., 1019 Old Monrovia Rd., Suite 149, Huntsville, AL 35806

First let me address the origin of the name Eller. Like many of you reading this article, I had received many things in the mail, over the past years, asking for money to provide information on the name and like many of you I succumbed to the temptation. Well this article may or may not tell you if you got what you paid for. In all I have read, the name Eller was given to a group of people living at either an elder tree or near a bend in the river. Since the German word for elder tree is "holunder", I don't think we carne from under a tree. But, the German word for elbow is ellbogen and I now think we are getting closer. It is rny undocumented belief that the name Eller carne from a group of people living at or near the bend in the river. The variation of family names in the Germanic languages was either derived from the location where people lived or their occupation. In our case, I think it was where our forefathers lived. Since Germany has a vast and beautiful river network, the search for the right river could prove too difficult for this amateur genealogist. After realizing the vastness of my mission to find the origin of the name, I regrouped and planned a new strategy. This time I would locate all the cities in Germany with the name Eller in them. With the help of my wife and some dated German atlases, we began. The fruit of our labo1 produced five cities in Germany with the name Eller in their title. The search could now continue with the desired objective of visiting each of these five towns. As fate would have it, the first four produced nothing of great value to us except beautiful scenery and a chance to meet a lot of German people. The last town we had on our list was Eller's Reutha. The German word for clearing is "reutha" . This town was only a minute spot on the map but maybe we could find someone \"Tith information. Eller's Reutha is located about five miles from the town of Scheide8g· Eller's Reutha consist of one frame house with no occupants that knew of the origin of our name. Disappointed but not ready to give up, we went to Scheidegg for the night. This tm-m is a beautiful small town located near the Boden ZeG in the shadow of the Austrian Alps. The area around Schiedegg has been Austrian as well as German over the last several centuries. After a good night's sleep, we visited the Rothaus, which is the city hall, and met the Bugermister or mayor. He was extremely helpful and prepared to help rne in any way he could . He assigned a clerk in the Rothaus to help rne with rny research. We began by checking the church records in the local . It was in this church that we got our

biggest break and the most information we had ever collected. The records clearly indicated the presence of Ellers in the region since the 1600's. Based on this find I think I can say with some degree of certainty that the name Eller probably originated in this part of Europe. Are we Austrian or German you may ask- that is a mission for my next trip. In later articles, I will outline my finds in Scheidegg. Now that I knew the name Eller was found in Germany, I began my search for a registration of the name. This would prove to be easier and less time consuming than the search for the origin of the name. With the help of several German officers, I had met, I was able to locate the German Reitst~ Armorial General document pertaining to the name Eller. A name became registered when it gained enough prominence through either deeds or marriages. The name Eller is registered in this document but the source of prominence can not be determined. But that is just as well because I would want to believe the name was placed there for deeds rather than marriage. Names have been orderly registered in Germany since the 1500's and the name Eller was added between 1650 and 1700. Each name registered has a coat of arms designed for it. The coat of arms is really, what we in this country, call a family crest plus some additional fancy trappings.

The Eller coat of arms contains a large shield with ~ smaller shield in the center. Radiating from behind the smaller shield in the center appears to be rays of light. The three colors that make up this crest are red, blue and gold. It appears that the source of the light is hidden behind the smaller shield and you can only see the rays illuminating out. A lot of stories could be developed on the meaning of the coat of arms but the family motto puts it all in perspective. The motto reads "Gloria Virtutis Umbra" and a loose translation would be something like " Glory and virtue from the darkness". As I study the family coat of arms, I see more than just a coat of arms. I see a strong light which cannot be hidden even by a shield or force and it always illuminates out. I see a light in the darkness shinning forth. As I read the Eller Chrr•nicles and reflect back on the family history that I know, I feel it is a fitting motto for our clan. The family motto shows a family that has shown brightly for well over 300 years and will continue to shine brightly into the 21st century. It is of great consolation to know your name stands for light rather than darkness.

DESCENDANTS of JOHN and ANN (Overdorf) ELLER of INDIANA by Mrs. Ray Eller and Mrs. Glenis Schildmeier Submitted to the Chronicles by James L. Correll, 304 S. St. John St., P.O. Box 509, Arcadia, IN 46030-0509

ELLER FAMILY RECORD (1955)

JOHN ELLER b. 29 Dec. 1851; d. 27 June 1930; m. 5 Jan. 1871, ANN OVERDORF b. 28 Jan. 1852; d. 10 Dec. 1941

They started housekeeping on the Andy Eller farm about 4 1/2 miles east of Arcadia, Indiana. After moving several times, they bought the Israel Gosha farm where Earnest and Ruby Eiler now live. This was their home place until their death. They lived in town 11 years from 1908 to 1919; then they moved back to the farm where they lived until health failed. Then they stayed month about with their children. Mr. Eller died at the home of his son Ed in 1930. Mrs. Eller died at the home of her daughter Flora in 1941.

In the spring of 1944, Elsie (Eller) Boden and Mildred (Landes) Hartley thought it would be nice to hold a family gathering of the descendants of John and Ann (Overdorf) Eller. So on August 28, 1944, the first reunion ofthis Eller family was held on Arcadia School gounds in Arcadia, Indiana with several present. It was decided to have a reunion each year.

The Second Eller reunion was held in the woods on the farm where Melvin Bryant's lived.- now owned by Clifford Eller- 3 1/2 miles east of Arcadia, Indiana. The Third Eller reunion was held at the home of Charles Eller, south of Tipton, Indiana. The Fourth Eller Reunion was held at the home of William Eller, 3 mi. east and 1/2 mile south of Atlanta, Indiana.

It was getting to be too much of a task to have these reunions in the homes. So on August 15, 1948, the Fifth Eller reunion was held in Tipton Park, Tipton, Indiana. A few years later the date was changed to the last Sunday of July. It has been there every year since. Snapshots were taken every year. On July 26, 1953, at the Tenth Eller reunion, Mr. Crowell ofTipton came and took a picture of the entire group. Twenty nine pictures were made and sold at $1.00 each.

Charles Greer 1503 Quail Drive Greensboro, NC 27408 J. G. E 11 er "The Eller Chronicles" Route 2 Box 145-D Whittier, NC 28789 Mr. Eller: As a part-time genealogist and a member of the Eller family I have put off until now joining the Eller Yamily Association. It was the recent gift of Volume VII, Number 1 ,,f "The Eller Chronicles" that has prompted me to join. The article entitled "Eller Families of Wilkes County, NC: Descendants of James Madison and Nancy Louise (Vannoy) Eller" is my concern. While I have in the past read on occasion "The Chronicles" at the Wilkes Public Library I was surprised to receive a copy from my grandmother Ruby Lee Eller Greer. She had been telling us that she was getting a copy of ~book that her brother Clinton had done some research for based on corrections made to Aunt Nora's earlier work. Much to my disappointment corrections and/or additions to the work were not complete. I was pleased to read a call for more information and corrections. Therefore I have included additions to the work that include the only child of Ruby Lee Eller (#30), daughter of John Grover Eller (#12), son of James Madison Eller. While other information has been left out and mistakes have been made based on the original work it is my hope that other family members will take it upon themselves to supply the proper information.

Briefly then I believe the entry for my grandmother should be: Ruby Lee Eller,b. 2 August 1913, daughter of John Grover Eller and Beatrice Jones; m. 8 May 1930, Joseph Frederick Greer. He died 24 April 1933. One child. M. July 1946, Clayton Greer. He died 12 December 1974. Child of Ruby Lee Eller and Joseph Frederick Greer:

One child, Julia Caroline Greer, b. 4 August 1988.

Please find enclosed my check in the amount of $15.00 to cover my annual dues. I have also included charts from my research with the numbers corresponding to the article's entered by hand for my grandmother, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. I look forward to receiving future issues of "The Eller Chronicles."

Dear Gerald, I read with interest the article by Ruth Goodman in the February Chronicles. Will you please publish the enclosed abstracts of the wills of John Getchey and his wife, Christina Getchen and maybe we can ?ut to rest the parentage of at least Christian, Christina, El~sabethand Frederick Eller, children of Jacob Eller and his first wife, Maria Eva Getchey Eller. Christian, Christina and Elisabeth are named in Christina Getchen's will of 8 March, 1790 as her grandchildren and children of Jacob Eller.

We know Frederick Eller was 18 1/2 and Elisabeth was 12 as of 9 February, 1785 when they were bound out to Abram Eary. Since Frederick was older than Elisabeth, he would also have to be a son of Jacob and his first wife, Eve. From the combination of John Getchey's, Christina Getchen's and Jacob Eller's wills we can narrow Eve Getchey Eller's death to between 1773 (Elisabeth's birth) and 1775 (Eve's birth, dau ghter of Jacob and his second wife, Barbary).

We know from John Getchey's will of 3 September, 1772 that Eve Getchey Eller was still living. Jacob Eller and Maria Eva Goettge were married 11 December, 1753, not 1773 as written on page 1 of the February Chronicles.

Jemuel Eller, the writer of this letter, is likely the same as Samuel Eller in Co. H, Twenty-third Regiment. A resident of Rowan, Samuel was "struck in the left leg by 3 minnie balls" and captured at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. His left leg was ampu tated before he was exchanged some time before March 1, 1864. (Louis H. Manarin and Weymouth T. Jordan Jr., eds., North

Carolina Troops, 1861~1865:A Roster (Raleigh: Division of Archives and History, Department of Cultural Resources [projected multivolume series, 1966-], VII, 220, hereinafter cited as Manarin and Jordan, North Carolina Troops.) The recipient of this letter, whom Jemuel addressed as "friende," probably was James Eller of Rowan, also a soldier in Company H, Twenty-third Regiment. He enlisted about September 3, 1862, and was paroled at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. (Manarin and Jordan, North Carolina Troops, Vol. I, p. 80.) The Rowan County census of 1850 shows James Eller, age 15, the son of Charles and Sophia (Brown) Eller, enumerated among eleven other siblings. Eller's letter mentioned several by name: Benjamin, a younger brother, was recovering from wounds in a Raleigh hospital. He probably was the Benjamin Eller in Company G, Sixth Regiment, N.C. State Troops. He was a resident of Rowan, enlisted on April 1, 1864, and took the oath of allegiance at Salisbury on June 24, 1865. (Manarin and Jordan, North Car olina Troops, Vol. IV, p. 347.) Another brother, David Eller, a prisoner in "Yankeedom," may be the David Eller of Rowan County who served in Company D, Forty second Regiment. He enlisted at age 28 in 1862 and was present and accounted for until captured at Cold Harbor, Va., on June 2 or 3, 1864. Initially held at Point Lookout, Md., he was later transferred to Elmira, N.Y., where he died of "variola" on March 10, 1865. (Manarin and Jordan, North Carolina Troops, Vol. X, p. 231.) Jemuel wrote James the sad news of the death of his sister, Avaline (listed as Eveline, age 10, in the 1850 Rowan County census). James's new wife was mentioned, but not by name. She was likely Leah Earnheart, who married James Eller on August 13, 1857, according to Rowan County marriage bonds. (Samuel Eller married Polly Earnheart on November 25, 1861; James Eller was his bondsman.)

THE ELLA/ELLER SURNAMES IN ENGLAND

Raymond E.O. Ella

Letter from Mr. and Mrs. Raymond E.O. Ella, 12 Sycamore Green, GORLESTON, Norfolk, England, NR31 SEW; 25 Jan. 1993 to J. G. Eller:

Thank you for your most interesting letter from the 21st ofDec. -92 (sent 15 Jan. -93). My wife and I, with our three sons, are all Yorkshire born, having settled to live in Norfolk, England, nine years ago.

Our middle son Brian and his wife Teresa gave us our first grandchild, born in July -92, a little girl named Elyissa Rohanna Ella, just wait until she has to spell her name at school!.

A few years ago I was a genealogist for people with Norfolk and Suffolk roots, these counties meaning: "northern folk and southern folk of East Anglia", although I no longer do any research for people.

However, please feel free to use any information I've sent you in my letters, i.e. in the May 1993 issue of the Eller Chronicles, indeed you have my permission .. .I will try and answer any letters I may possibly get. It would be very kind of you to send me a free copy of said publication.

The origin of my country's name is Anglo-Saxon, its meaning being: "Angle's, or rather Engle's Land", named after one of the Germanic tribes that settled here, so therefor, there are quite a few words and names in England today with a Germanic Saxon origin. If the surname ofElla is a phonetic or variant scribe-form of ELLER, then indeed this in England was from the Ellertree, or the maker of wooden clogs from the Ellertree, the maker being known as an "Eller", the Ellerwood in modern times now being the Alderwood. However, if ELLER is a variant from the name ELLA, then this was a singular name for men in saxon times, in England, long before fixed names (surnames) became fashionable in England.

Surnames in England came-about and were handed-down in a family sometime in the 1400s, yet it must be noted, that members of the Gentry were surnamed much earlier, one again, in England. Many surnames came from place-names; e.g. Lincoln and Washington!, birds, nicknames and trade-names, e.g. Wainwright, this is a common surname in England today, yet one the name of a wooden wagon-maker, "wain" being Old-English for a wagon. Another middle-english form would be "Cartwright", this old trade-name now being a personal surname.

However, getting back to Ella, this and Anna, Ida, Mildred being common girl fornames today in England, yet once all being singular names amongst men in Saxon England, yet the name Ella in modern printed books on Anglo-Saxon England, would now be found in the form of Aelle or Aella, rather than in the old form of /EIIe and )Ella.

151 p. 87

Eller Chronicles Vol. VII (2) May 1993

Once again, the forms of Eller and Ella are found in the north of England at a very early stage in history, i.e. has surnames in the counties of Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Lancashire, and Leicestershire.

At a very early stage, I think the form Ella would have had an East-Riding of Yorkshire origin, this also going for the variants Eller, Ellar, and Ellay etc., this East-Riding area of Yorkshire now being in North Humberside County, since the boundry changes in England, this being in 1974. Indeed, Yorkshire had a big chunk taken away from it. I know people who live in Hull, North Humberside, yet they still call themselves "Yorkshire folk". . . Mr. and Mrs. R.E.O. Ella.

Letter from Mr. Raymond E.O. Ella, (Same address) to Charlotte Marshall, 28 Jan. 1993:

Greetings from the land of our most gracious Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. Thank you for your interesting letter dated the 19th of Jan.- 93, indeed also the copy of THE ELLER CHRONICLES (Nov. 89).

I have just written another letter to James Gerald Eller ofNC, giving him some more information on the ELLER name in England, possibly he will send-on to you some of this information to be printed in your May Eller Chronicles.

However, it must be noted, that the development of the name ELLER in England, would have been quite apart from that of Germany, although we English are Anglo-Saxon in origin, having settled in what we call England now, after the 5th century A.D., some of the Anglo-Saxon tribes having come from Old-, indeed what is now Germany. So, there are quite a few surnames in England today that have a Germanic origin. T he English language has its origin in the Old-English or Anglo-Saxon language, this having come from the motherland, indeed it was a variant-dialect from old- German dialects. My brother, Dr. George Melvyn Ella who now lives in Germany, although a Yorkshireman like myself, tells me if you know modern German, then it is much easier to learn Old English or Anglo-Saxon language, but this has almost died-out, and only a handfull of people today can write/speak it.

I forgot to tell J. G.EIIer the following:

Near the village ofHarswell in North Humberside, one in Yorkshire before the boundry changes of 1974, there are place-names of : "Castle Eller Drain", and "Eller logs Dike". These place-names came-about because the Ellertree, now Aldertree in modem English, grew there before the marshes were dryed-out. There are other areas of northern England where there are place-names starting with Eller, e.g. Ellerton, Ellerbeck etc.

I think I told J. G. Eller about the trade-name of an "Eller", he having made wooden clogs from the Ellertree, because there is more sap in this wood, so more waterproof

152 p. 88 Eller Chronicles Vol. VII (2) May 1993

This old trade-name is now redundant, and only historians would know about it. So there could be Ellers in the USA today, that may have their family roots in England rather than the other development in Germany.

But if Eller is a phonetic variant scribe-form from Ella, then this also had an Anglo-Saxon origin, scribed in the Old-English forms of tEIIe and £11a, found in modern printed printed books on Anglo-Saxon England, in the form of Aelle or Aella. There were no such thing as a standard form of spelling before lets say c. 1800 in England, and indeed long after, so one must know something about phonetics and local dialects when researching old documents in England's various areas .. .

You may order a microfilmed copy of my family tree at your local Morman church (LDS branch library. I once sent the Mormon's HQ a copy in Salt Lake City, this taking me back to a James Ella of Thornton le Street in North Yorkshire during the 1670s, yet his name was found in variant scribe-forms in old documents, i.e. Eller, Ellar, Elly and Ellay ... signed Mr. and Mrs. R.E.O Ella

(Eds. Mr. Ella has also kindly provided eighteen pages from the International Genealogical Index of listings for Ellor, Ellow, Elly, Ella, and other variant phonetic spellings. Space in this issue does not permit their inclusion. We will be glad to send photocopies to interested parties. In The Eller Chronicles, Vol. V, No. 3, August, 1991, p. 201 and 202 are listed two heads of families, both named Henry Eller, who were born in England (Henry Eller of DeKalb Co., MO, b. Apr. 1844; wife named Caroline, b. May1828) (Henry Eller of Yankton Co., SD, b. Feb. 1866). Mr. Ella is quite correct that some Ellers in the USA were natives ofEngland. We do indeed thank Mr. Ella for so much new information on the Ella/EIIer families of England and his discourse on the history ofthe names in England).

Dear Kinsman:-

Your sister, Dorothy Vaughn, who lives in nearby Stratford has told me of your new job in the Air Force in ~rmanyand says that you might find time to do sone Eller fall'lily -researching during your spare time. Regretfully I cannot tell you exactly where our emigrant ancestor came from in Germany rut suspect that it migtt~rom near Dusseldorf. There also was an Eller family of about the right period, to have been the forebears of our American Ellers, that lived at a place called Untermesbach but I can find no such place on arry maps of Germaqy that I have seen.

Our emigrant ancestor was George Michael Eller who lived in Frederick Co., Md. and died there in 1778 leaving children, Peter, our ancestor, Leom.rd, Elizabeth and younger children named Jacob, George, John, Eve, Catherine and Maria. All of these children, apparent~, were grown or nearly grown at the time of their father's death. If in your researches you find a George Michael Eller borrlt say between 1700 and 1725, it is quite likely that he wc:nld be the man we're after. He probably would have had parents or brothers and sisters with names like Christian, George, Peter, Leonard, Jacob, John, Michafi_;cii='Melchoir. Dear Dorothy:

Your very nice letter has been received and we were happy to get it and to know that you were going to have a nice trip to Virginia. Virginia is a marvelous place to be at this time of the year. We were down there two years ago when the apple blossoms were just bursting out and it was beautiful. When you return we rm1st get together. Time passes so fast it almost floors one.

Pretty soon now our new "all on one floor" house will be canpleted and we want you by all means to come up and see it. We've sold our present fourteen room home and expect to get into the rew one late in June or early Ju~. Plastering is being dore this week. It will have three bedrooms on the first floor and a domitory on the seconr:3 for the grandchildren to use when they visit us. We just couldn't build a house ~dthoutproviding for them.

I was very glad to get the record of your family that your father pre pared. I 1m going to send him a copy of the way I interpreted it and ask him to give me scme more information about his brothers and their families. I'm slow~ preparing a new book on the Eller family beginning with tb3 inunigra.'lt ancestor George Michael Eller who lived in Frederick County, Mary land two hundred years ago. It has been a coloss~ltask but one that I think worth-while. Within a year I hope to be able to get it finished and in print. It all depends upon how prompt~various families send me late information on their families as you have done.

I certainly will write Lynn and encourage him to look into the records at Dusseldorf and surrounding towns hoping that he might find a family of Eller with children named George Michael, Peter, Christian, Jacob, Leonard and John; particular George Michael. I am sure a record of them is to be found in some town or village in Germ.any but it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack to know where to look unless we knew in advance the name of the village they came from and. this I oo not know.

We are both well and from la~taccounts so are our children and grandchildren. We haven't seen m\lch of them this winter but intend to go to Longmeadow, Massachusetts this Thursday to see our oldest grand daughter perfonn in son.:! school event.

Love to you all and do drive up and see us soon.

Dear Louise:

It was so nice to hear from you and to have your fine cooperation in ordering four copies of the new Eller book which, I think, will be ready for shipment about October 1st. You're correct in surmising that it was quite a job; fascinating and interesting in many ways but terribly exacting and nerve-wracking in others. I remember well the help your father gave on the first book that I wrote and I keep thinking of how much he would enjoy reading the new data that I have obtained for the forthcoming book.

I remember your father so well and so pleasant~.Every time I see Dwight Eisenhower step before the UJlevision screen I think of him. The President 1 s eyes and those of your fathers, I think, are so very much alike. I wonder if the thought ever o~curedto you?

I'm sorry to hear of Pauline's frailness and hope that she is taking good care of.herself and is on the road to full recover.y. I remember her very pleasantly, too, and have hoped that we might visit her again when we go to Fort Dodge to visit Hattie's people.

Both Hattie and I are sorry Eloise didn't stop by and ~Seeus when she was in New England. Being on Cape Cod she could easi~have gone to New Hampshire via New Haven and Hamden where we live.

You spoke of Louise Dickey Ward. We saw her two years ago when we were in Iowa. Her mother, our cwsin Rella Dickey, ·who was very frail at the time died soon after 0

54 weiterhelfen. An das Ev. Pfarramt in Untermerzbach

Hochachtungsvoll Mr. Lynn Eller Translation:

My genealogist indicated to me that my ancestors emigrated from Untermerzbach to the United States of America within 1700 to 1725. I am very anxious to obt=in some close details about my ancestors during my stay in Ger~any. Would you be so kind to furnish me with data from your parochial reeister and with a birth certificate for Mr. George Michael Eller if possible. For your guidance I like to mention that Mr. George Michael Eller had five or six brothers named Christoph, Peter, Leonard, Jacob and Johann. If you are able to determine the name and any data of Mr. G.M. Eller's parents, would you please send me also copies of existing documents. ------, : .. ·~------··· --·.

Regarding your inquiry of May 5, 1956, I regret to inform you, that I am not able to furnish the required documents since the baptismal register of this pastorate commences with 1740 • The baptismal registers prior to 1740 have been robbed in the course of Anti- Reformation at an armed revolt. It is not known were they are at present. As far as the evidence of the name E 1 1 e r is concerned this name appears here through all centuries.

Possibly Prof. Dr. KarlE 1 1 er in Munich, Adalbert = StraBe 54 may give you any further assistance since he orginates from this community.

~~INZ-KASTEL15 May 1956 Dear Prof. Dr. Karl Eller. In trying to obtain extracts for the family Eller from the parodical register at the pastorate in Untermerzbach I have been referred to your address.

Mr. Lynn Eller, who is well knov~nto me, is trying to obtain close information regarding his ancestors during his presence in Germany. He has been advised from his genealogist in the States that Mr. Georg Michael Eller emigrated from Untermerzbach to the United States of America within 1700 to 1725 ( his proffesion was possibly sieve -maker ), it is further known that five or six brothers existed of Georg Michael Eller named Christoph, Peter, Leonard, Jacob and Johann. The data of Mr. Ellers ancestors are complete as far as at the moment of Mr. G.M. Ellers emigration from Germany. Only the approximately year in which the emigration took place is known. I have contacted the pastorate in Untermerzbach in order to obtain from the parodical registers extracts, but have been advised that the old registers have been robbed in the course of the Anti - Reformation. However the clergyman in Untermerzbach referred me to you, assuming that you may be in a position to assist Mr. Lynn Eller in his inquiries. He would be very pleased if you could furnish to him any data or transcripts of genealogical trees. Mr. Lynn Eller will appreciate any information in that respect since he spares no pains to discover the past of his German ancestors.

We shall compensate you of course for any expensese arising in furnishing required information. Thanking you in anticipation for your efforts with best regards

Kurt Gschwandtner

De~ Professor Eller: It was most kind of you to reply to my inquiry concerning the Eller family in Germany. Your letter was received with much pleasure and enthusiasm, first because you eo kindly offer help in my genealogical search, and secondly because it was of interest to know of you personally and profeosionally. I sincerely regret that my acknO\?ledgement to your letter has been delayed. Perhaps n brief explanation of my work in Germany will explain why I have not been able to answ~ermore promptly. I am a civilian attached to the American Air Fo~cesin Europe. My job involves periodic travel and I was away from the offioee here in Wiesbaden for several weeks after receiving your letter. For this reason I was unable to accept your very kind invitation to visit with you at your home at Xaltenbrunn. I should hope that your busy schedule will nllow for us to make other arrangements to meet in the near future. The Eller genealogy in America was undertaken in 1925 and the findings published in book form by one of our own family. Through exhaustive research the family was traced back to the original Eller ancestor, George Michael Eller, who arrived 1n America between 1725 and 1740. !hree brothers followed George Michael between 1745 and 1750. These \vere named Jnoob, Christian and Helohoir. Records indicated that they migh~have lived near Dusseldorf or Untermerzbach prior to their move to America. The Dusseldorf records investigated to date have failed to show any information regarding George Michael Eller. Since a revision of the Eller geneology book is being made, it would be of great interest and enlightenment if facts concerning the history of the family in Germany could be found. If you have documents which pertain to the above mentioned names, such would be invaluable information to us. I plan to be in the Munich area the weekend of 22 and 23 September. On the evening of the 22nd I plan to visit Herrenchiemsee. Other than this my time during that week end would be free. Is it possible that you would be in Munich at that time and if eo, would you be free to arrange a meeting with me? Thank you again for your kind letter. Until we have the opportunity to meet and until t hear from you again, I rei!laiu, 4 --.A\. ~ , .. p. 105 Eller Chronicles Vol. VII (2) May 1993

ELLER REUNION- 1992 - CHUGWATER, WYO. Submitted by A. WM. ELLER

This reunion was for the descendants of Robert T. Eller, shown as the 7th child of William Eller (See J. W. Hook, George Michael Eller and Descendants of His in America, 1957, pp. 184-185). There were 59 in attendance, only two couldn't make it. Our 1980 reunion, fully attended, had 38 in attendance.

The reunion was wholly social. We had one evening of reminiscing by the older set, my three siblings and me plus our only 1st cousin from San Diego. Held at the Diamond Ranch, a genuine working ranch, there was of course horse back riding, hayrack rides, trail meals, swimming, hiking and of course eating. A one day trip to Fort Laramie was made by most of us. We are planning on our next reunion to be in five years.

Enclosed is an 8 x 10 of our reunion. (Eds. This has been reproduced and appears on the back cover). Also enclosed are two pictures of the T -shirt that the wife and daughter of my nephew in Dallas, TX designed (the one featured in the August issue) •• Across the top of the southwest design is 'Eller Family Reunion'; across the bottom 'Chugwater Wyoming 1992'; on the sides are the married names of the family girls. (Eds. The two T Shirt pictures appear below - we hope they reproduce well). Apology! This is one of the stories that got filed and forgotten).

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

As I look forward to Conf. '93 in Portland, I contemplate turning over the reins of the presidency to another. It has been an enjoyable four-year venture, especially to have been able to successfully complete a mandate received at Conf. '89, that of providing for the association a reprint of Hook's 1957 book. Although I anticipated a greater response, having no real feel for the need, I was pleased to be able to satisfy the desire of nearly 290 people to own a copy of that book. I've have never been able to determine how many copies Hook had printed in 1957. I'm still receiving an occasional request but am satisfied that the reprinting nearly matched the demand, given the fact that the printer had an extra 36 copies printed as a hedge against spoilage, to our benefit.

Another highlight of my tenure was Conf. '91. It was indeed exciting to have so many Ellers and associated families gather in Estes Park in support of the EF A As Conf. '93 nears reality in the beautiful northwest, hosted by our super energetic Charlotte Eller Marshall, let us at the same time plug into the future when we will move back to Eller country in the east, plans for which of course are only in their infancy.

I have nothing new to report except to anticipate the forthcoming change of command with a new president, vice-president and three new board members. I'm looking forward to the new ideas and enthusiasm they will bring to the association. I expect to report on the status of plans for Vol. II ofEIIer Genealogy.

Some long-range plans for the EFA have been discussed with J. Gerald Eller, Charlotte Marshall and Lynn Eller. They, with my concurrence, input, and support, are preparing some ideas, options, and recommendations to share with the full membership of the EF A, beginning first with the conference at Portland. I encourage each EF A member to examine these proposals carefully and respond with your suggestions. No final action is expected to be taken on these matters at the conference but may be presented there for informal discussion. Following Conf. '93, the new officers and directors are expected to take the plans under advisement.

It has been a pleasure serving you,

Sincerely,

A. William Eller, President, EFA

COMMENTS: A PLEA FOR STRATEGIC PLANNING

The size and complexity ot this issue 6f the Chfonicles provides some evidence of the rapid increase in new information that reaches your editors. the mliny new contacts made ovijr the past year has generated much new material. No longer can assurance be given to submitters that their material will appear in the very next issue.

Enough unpublished material to fill several issues of the Chronicles is on hand. However, some of the material, while important and must be eventually published, need not necessarily be published in the Chronicles. The possibility of a new EFA publication in addition to the Chronicles is being explored. With sound editorial work and good marketing strdtegy, a second level of publications seems feasible and should generate sufficient funds to be self-supporting and provide some funds for the large volumes which Bill Eller is pushing. I have promised to outline my view of a range of new publication options at Conference Ill.

Consultations with Bill Eller, Charlotte Marshall and Lynn Eller on the publication problems has resulted in general agreement that the new officers should lead the full EFA membership in an exercise of long-range strategic planning.

Under Bill Eller's leadership our organization has experienced much progress. For example, new fund-raising projects have been launched which are expected to generate new funds to support worthy projects such as research and restoration of cemeteries and other landmarks of interest to the Eller families; tax-exempt status has been obtained and it is hop~ that EFA members will begin to make individual tax-exempt contributions for support of special projects. This will happen only if the EFA achieves a higher level of organization, clearer statements of policies, procedures and guidelines that generates trust among the membership that their contributions will be used conservatively and carefully to achieve desired results ..

Profits from the sale of the Eller Family Cookbook and other fund-raising projects, including individual contributions, will add significant new funds. The full amounts should be in hand before the 1994 budget is implemented. Also, clear policies and guide lines should also be in place to guide the use of special project funding. This will assure maximum benefits to the EFA and avoid setting unsound precedents. Incidentally, all funds appropriated in 1992 for special restoration projects have been replaced by individual contributions of various members. I recommend that the 1994 budget cyle run from January 1994 to January 1995. This would enable the new Officers and Directors to have time to complete the t,Jianning process, write new guidelines and prepare a realistic 1994 budget. For the remainder of 1993, expenditures should be limited to administrative expenses and the publication of The Eller Chronicles. One way the membership-at- large can greatly assist the budgeting process is to pay the membership fee on time.

I feel strongly that Conf. '93 must not slip-by without official action that will initiate a process of reevaluation and long-range planning. As these questions are addressed by the new officers and the planning process begins, provisions should be provided for input from all members. This should be the mandate passed to the new officers and directors who will be instaded at Cont. '93 ...... J. Gerald Eller, Co-Editor, The Eller Chronicles

ELLER FAMILY ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE Ill, (July 14-18, 1993, Portland, OR)

It is necessary to make a few minor changes in the EFA Conf. Ill Schedule as published in Vol. Vll(1) Feb. 1993, pp. 52-54 as follows:

1. The Board meeting will be changed from Thursday evening July 15, to Wednesday July 14, 7:30 to 9: P.M. All officers, Board members and nominees for various positions are asked to attend. This is an open meeting, all interested members are invited to attend. If you have an item for discussion, please contact Bill Eller, President, or Byron H. Eller, Director, to be placed on agenda. (Their addresses: see inside of back cover of recent issue of The Eller Chronicles.

2. The General Membership meeting will be held Thursday, July 15, in the afternoon. Pres. Bill Eller has family obligations in Portland at the same time the Conference is held. The General Membership business meeting will be held on Thursday because both he and Secy. Nancy Eller will attend that day. Immediately after elections, the newly elected President will assume the chair.

3. Saturday will remain the same except for the business meeting. Family displays, craft sales and/or auction, and fellowship will follow scheduled presentations.

Your conference committee hopes these changes does not inconvenience anyone. You are urged to make your lodging reservations and your Conference reservations soon, so plans for each days activities can be finalized. (Use forms inserted separately in this issue).

You may send your conference reservations with a $25.00 deposit, and pay the balance before conference or when you register. If you find you cannot attend, the deposit will be returned to you after the conference. This will help the Conference committee estimate the number attending and that information can be passed on to the Holiday Inn to assist them with their preparations.

If you do not wish to accompany the group Friday, July 16, please contact Charlotte Eller Marshall (Address inside back cover of this issue). Activity of some kind can be planned for that day at the Holiday Inn, if there is enough interest. However, arrangements for a meeting place must be made. Dwight Eller of Tucson, AZ has agreed to coordinate any activity at HI that day. This would be a very good time for researchers to get together and compare notes or exchange information (if you are not interested in the Columbia River tour).

This promises to be a very exciting, uplifting and informative conference. Gerald Eller and others have new ideas and plans to offer for discussion and consideration. New family lines are expected to be be represented for the first time. We hope to have for the first time reports on the Christian Eller line (NC, VA, KY and IN), the Leonard Eller line( NC, OH, and IN), the the Calvin Eller line (NC, TN). Thomas H. Eller will report on his research on the Bavarian Ellers of Germany. Prof. Dr. Klaus Napp-Zinn of Germany will be present and will bring new information about the Ellers of the German Rhineland, as well as a new bride.

Our first effort at group fund-raising to finance projects that are near and dear to many of us, such as research and restoration of cemeteries etc. will be launched. PLAN TO ATTEND AND PARTICIPATE IN THIS MOMENTOUS ELLER FAMILY GATHERI~G.USETHE FORMS INSERTED SEPARATELY IN THIS ISSUE ...... (s) Charlotte Eller Marshall, Conference Coordinator
