On behalf of the staff and students of Marion Graham, Mrs. Peterson, Principal Upcoming School Year Information

NEW STUDENT PRE-REGISTRATION…Any students new to Saskatoon and area, are invited to contact the school at any time during the summer months to receive information, ask questions, and make arrangements to pre-register for the fall. Counsellors will begin seeing new students on Wednesday, August 21, Thursday, August 22 and Friday, August 23. For an appointment, please phone 306-683-7756. Early pre-registration results in a better likelihood of getting desired classes and saves time and inconvenience later.

REGISTRATION Registration and classes of all collegiate students will begin on Tuesday, September 3 Schedule as follows: Period 2, 1, 3, 4 and 5 (for this day only) ALL STUDENTS (Grades 9,10, 11 and 12) are asked to report to the Large Gym at 8:45 a.m. If you are not returning to Marion Graham in the fall, please advise Student Services as soon as possible, so that we may update our records.

STUDENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT…The Marion M. Graham Collegiate Student Services Office has two full-time counsellors. Ms. Donna Bouchard (Grades 11 and 12), Ms. Geri Stolar (Grades 9 and 10), and secretary, Mrs. Karlie Pellerin. Services are provided in the areas of educational planning, career planning, and personal/social development.

LOCKS AND LOCKERS…Grade 9 students registering at Marion M. Graham Collegiate are required to purchase a combination lock from the school at a cost of $5 (included in their basic student fees). As owners of these locks, they will use them for the duration of their stay at MMGCI and will keep them beyond graduation. All students will be assigned new lockers in September of each year.

STUDENT HANDBOOKS… Student Handbooks will soon be available electronically to all students and parents via the School Portal (https://portal.spsd.sk.ca/school/mgc). Click on the link for School Documents and then select Student Handbook. A limited number of handbooks are available in print copy for a fee of $5.

COURSE CHANGES & TIMETABLES…Students are expected to study the courses originally chosen, because the school is scheduled and staffed on this basis. Every attempt has been made to fulfill their choices. However, please review the following closely: 1. The first priority is to ensure every student has the compulsory credits for their grade. If any compulsory classes are missing, the student must see their grade counsellor. 2. Some requested classes have been cancelled due to low enrollment. If a requested class is missing, the student must see their counsellor. 3. Only grade 11 and 12 students are able to have spares. If the student is in grade 10 next year, and there is a spare on their timetable, they must see their counsellor. 4. Class sizes have been balanced, and it is unlikely that changes can be made. Class changes will not be made unless there is a good reason to do so. Students will only be moved from one section of a class to another, if the enrollment in the class they will join is less than the current class they are in. 5. Online courses are a possible way to get the credits required. See a counsellor for this option. 6. Any classes dropped this year may need to be rescheduled. Please see a counsellor if there are questions. 7. Some classes may still change in the fall due to changes with teacher scheduling. 8. Students that drop courses after September 14 will be charged any associated fees and unable to receive a refund.

Students must attend all scheduled courses until a change is officially completed** CHANGE OF ADDRESS…Please inform the school immediately of any student’s change of address, phone number, or emergency contact person. If you have requested email delivery of your newsletters, please inform the school of any change in your email address.

APPROPRIATE SCHOOL DRESS…Common sense, good taste, and good manners should dictate what is appropriate dress for school. Some of the T-shirts sold in stores, or at concerts, are not appropriate in a public collegiate environment and students sometimes arrive at school with too much skin showing. Parents/guardians, please help us by ensuring that the clothing your son/s or daughter/s wear to school is suitable for a school setting. Further guidelines are available in the Student Handbook. We appreciate your assistance in this area.

MMGCI IS A NON-SMOKING CAMPUS…Smoking will not be allowed in or around the school building or anywhere on school property. This includes e-cigarettes, vapes, and chewing tobacco.

SMILE — YOU’RE ON CAMERA… Marion M. Graham Collegiate utilizes a number of surveillance cameras, that have been placed both inside and outside the school. Camera areas include the parking lot, front entry, commons area, and other locales inside and outside the school. Student safety and security remain a priority at MMGCI.

THE SERVERY…Beginning on Tuesday, September 3, the Servery will provide nutritious food each regular school day. Whether purchased at the school or brought from home, all food must be eaten in the Student Commons area.

STUDENT PHOTOS…Student photographs, for inclusion in the yearbook and development of student cards and souvenir photo packages, will be taken of all students on Tuesday, September 3 throughout the day. Each student will receive two proofs to choose from and a return date will be given at the time that these are handed out. There is a $10.00 late fee if students miss this return date. Families opting to order photos will be able to select from a variety of package options and will pay Lifetouch accordingly. Lifetouch will pick up the payment envelopes from the school. Our retake day is Wednesday, October 15, in the afternoon. Retakes will be done free of charge for those students whose eyes are shut or their mouth open, etc. Should your son/daughter wish to have a retake done, they must have the approval of the office ahead of time. On the day retakes are taken, they are to bring their proofs (and $5.00 if the student chooses to have a retake done for the reason that he/she just does not like the pictures). Students who were absent on the day photos were taken, will have their photo taken at this time at no charge.

CALCULATORS FOR MATH CLASSES…Students taking Grade 10 to 12 math courses should have a scientific calculator. Grade 9 students need a calculator with the 4 arithmetic functions and a square root key. A scientific calculator is also acceptable. The school supplies TI83 graphing calculators when they are necessary.

DRIVER EDUCATION…Because of the large number of students requesting Driver Education and the limited space available, classes will be filled according to the student’s date of birth. Students who are registered into a class, will receive a letter indicating their start date. All other students will be placed on a waiting list. Any questions in regards to placement, please see the Student Services office.

NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTION…Students who supplied an email address when they completed their course selection forms during the second semester of the 2019-2020 school year, will be sent an email notification with an attached newsletter each time a new newsletter is published. If you would prefer to get a print copy of the newsletter, please do one of the following: 1) phone MMGCI at 306-683-7750 or 2) email us at [email protected]. Changes to email addresses, or the addition of an email address to our Student Information System can be done in the same way. It is important that you supply the student name(s) and parent/guardian name, as well as the correct email address. PHONING SYSTEM FOR ATTENDANCE…Marion M. Graham Collegiate uses an automated phoning system to alert parents of the absence of their students. After attendance is tabulated at the end of the day, phone calls will automatically go out to the homes of students. These calls are programmed to go out between the hours of 6:00 and 9:00 PM each day.

We believe that this system leads to much more regular and accurate communication between the school and our homes. Please call our attendance desk at 306-683-7755 with questions or requests.

ATTENDANCE…At Marion M. Graham Collegiate, students (with the assistance of their parents) will assume the full responsibility for maintaining their attendance records. This means that students will NOT BE REQUIRED to have their absences cleared to be admitted to their next class; however, if an absence is not cleared, that absence will be assumed to be an unacceptable absence. If a student CHOOSES TO HAVE A REASON for the absence documented, the parent must contact an Attendance Secretary by phone or a note. This must be done prior to, on the day of, or the day following the absence; otherwise it will be recorded as an unexplained absence. Absences uncleared for more than 5 days will remain uncleared. Since we strive for and expect each student to be successful, all students are expected to attend all classes each and every day.

Please contact the Attendance Secretary at 306-683-7755 regarding absences or attendance information. We also have voice messaging on our attendance line. If you are unable to reach an Attendance Secretary, you may leave a message.

HOMEWORK REQUESTS FOR ABSENT STUDENTS…If a student misses school for two or more consecutive days, it is recommended that a parent/guardian phone in a request for homework. They may call an Attendance Secretary before 8:50 AM or leave a message requesting homework for their son/daughter on the attendance line 306-683-7755. The homework will be ready for pick up after 3:30 PM that day.

COUNSELLORS CORNER…Reminder to students and parents to check out COUNSELLORS CORNER on our Parent Portal. You will find important information for post-secondary schooling, scholarships and other opportunities.

PARKING FOR CARS AND BICYCLES…The right to park on school property is a privilege dependent upon drivers meeting acceptable standards. Student parking is permitted on school property ONLY in the designated areas. Signs indicate where parking is prohibited. The City of Saskatoon Commissionaires will issue tickets to cars illegally parked. Safety and convenience for all, are the critical factors underlying parking regulations. We anticipate co-operation from all students with respect to safe and appropriate parking.

Neither the school nor have any insurance for vehicles or bicycles parked on school property. Persons parking on school property do so at their own risk. Bicycle racks are provided to which bicycles must be locked. The school can assume no responsibility for the theft of bicycles or bicycle parts. Thefts should be reported to the police and school authorities. Although the area is supervised, we cannot provide continuous supervision of the area to prevent vandalism. Marion M. Graham Collegiate Staff, Student and Visitor Parking Traffic Flow

We look forward to many more events to come! Enjoy the school year and remember to take part in clubs and sports offered at our school. Have a great year, and go Falcons! MMGCI MUSIC ASSOCIATION

Welcome to the MMGCI Music program! Our music programs would not exist without the dedication of our incredible Teachers, Administration, and you, working together as a team. If your student is enrolled in Band &/or Choir, you are already a part of the Music Association. Your level of involvement is voluntary but very valuable! You can find up-to-date information about schedules, trips, concerts, and opportunities to fundraise for your student's trips by joining our Facebook page. Please search for Marion Graham Music Association and join us! You can also find us on the school’s portal.

In the fall, your student will be asked by the music teachers to fill out an online form to provide your contact information to the MGMA so that you can receive emails directly from us. This is another way that you can hear about concert dates, optional fundraising opportunities, music executive meetings, volunteer opportunities, and program details. We find these reminder emails are very helpful to keep us all organized! You will also be able to join Remind messaging to receive text messages/reminders directly from the band/choir teachers – these numbers will be shared in the fall. This being the MGMA’s 20th Anniversary year, we hope to host a few extra special events and have many fundraising activities to make our Sr trip to NewYork and Jr trip to Alberta more affordable for students, and to assist the music program as a whole. In the fall, look for Saskatoon Co-op, Prairie Meats, Glitter Shopping Night (Lawson Heights Mall), and Safeway/Sobeys Gift Cards. Bingos/Flipgive also start in the fall, but continue throughout the year. A new opportunity available this yr for music students is busing tables for TCU events. All of these fundraising opportunities are optional, but will help your student earn personal travel credits that can be directly applied to their trips. Our main general fundraiser in semester two is the ‘Heart & Soul Dessert Night and Silent Auction’ at the school. All proceeds from Heart & Soul fund special projects for the music programs as a whole. Details of all fundraisers will be emailed out and can be found on our Facebook page as they become available. A few upcoming events to note: • The next executive meeting of the MGMA is tentatively scheduled for September 10, 2019 at 7pm in the band room at the school. You are welcome to join us! • The fall music retreat for Sr band/choir students will be September 19-21 at Christopher Lake. Watch your emails for more details about this fun and enriching opportunity. • Our Annual General Meeting will be held on October 22. We will review the 2018-2019 year, our financials, and hold elections. A notice will come out in the fall from the nominating committee inviting nominations. All positions are elected annually and include: President, Vice President (2), Treasurer, Secretary and Members at Large (2). • We are currently looking for someone to fill the Secretary position in our group, and people to shadow our 2 key roles of Bingo Coordinator and Treasurer to take over not this year, but next (2020-2021). We are also always looking for keen people to help out at our fundraisers and events in general! – just let us know if you are interested in joining us. Finally, a special thanks to Margo Junk (MAL) and Melodie Markusa (VP) who served on the MGMA and "graduated" along with their Gr.12 students last yr. Your work was very much appreciated and you will be missed!

So, this is what MGMA is all about… ‘a large group of people who are willing to support a great program’. Please contact us at: [email protected] for more information. We are looking forward to another fantastic year of great music at MMGCI! Marion M. Graham Collegiate Student Fees 2019-2020
