KOFI AGAWU Introduction Describing his first visit to Debussy's house in Paris in 1911, Igor Stravinsky noted: " ••• we talked about Mussorg­ sky's songs and agreed that they contained the best music of the whole Russian school."l Today, Mussorgsky is largely known by a small number of instrumental works such as Pictures at an Exhibition, Night on Bald Mountain, and the opera Boris Godunov. Of these three works, the first and last are generally better known in versions other than the original-Ravel's orchestration of Pictures and Rimsky­ Korsakov's revision of Boris. This has led to the commonly accepted critical representation of Mussorgsky as a composer "deficient" in technique-one of whose works need to be "cleaned-up" and "made acceptable" to the listening public. The master captured the microcosm of passions, that originally inhabit the soul of a child, and his works presented an embodiment of the deep, ontological nature of any human personality with its typical mixture of good and evil. In his musical works about children the composer also showed us some fundamental laws of psychology: some child entertainments, that are not quite harmless, conceal future repulsive character traits of an adult; and evident aggressiveness of a person is often a result of a former child having been unjustly insulted. All this makes it possible for us to speak of Mussorgsky as a composer and a child psychologist. Marius Constant) Le tombeau de Couperin • La valse Maurice Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales present a vivid mixture of atmospheric impressionism, intense expression and modernist wit, his fascination with the waltz further explored in La valse, a mysterious evocation of a vanished imperial epoch. Heard here in an orchestration by Marius Constant, Gaspard de la nuit is Ravel’s response to the other-worldly poems of Aloysius Bertrand, and the dance suite Le tombeau de Couperin is a tribute to friends who fell in the war of 1914-18 as well as a great 18th century musical forbear. ‘It is a delightful and assorted collection… presented in splendid performances by the Orchestre National de Lyon led by their music director, the venerable American conductor Leonard Slatkin.’ (Classical.net / Volume 1, 8.572887) Volume 1 of this series of Ravel’s orchestral music (8.572887 and NBD0030) has proved an immediate hit and has been warmly received by the press. Journeying from the Russian Empire through the Soviet era to the contemporary scene, the music of the Russian masters covers a huge canvas of richly coloured and immediately accessible works.     M u z y k a l i a XIV · Zeszyt rosyjski 2 The World of Childhood in Mussorgsky’s Opera Boris Godunov I z a N e m i r o v s k a y a Nearly 150 years have elapsed since the writing of opera Boris Godunov, but the comprehension of this masterpiece is still going on. Within the past decade alone, two academic volumes of Mussorgsky’s Complete Works were published with their scientific editing based on the latest achievements in textual studies1, the opera’s modern interpretations were offered in its recent productions in Russia and abroad, and music scholars still find out highly original shades of meaning in this composition that seems to have been scrutinized at great length. The present article analyzes Mussorgsky’s conception from an unexpected angle, which has virtually escaped the scholars’ attention, namely, the dramaturgical connotation underlying the theme of childhood. Of course, children’s images in this opera could not have been ignored altogether. These images have certainly been appraised but mainly in the inter-media plane, as a certain ‘family interior’ in “The Tsar’s apartments in the Kremlin”, hereinafter referred to as ‘Terem”, or as a vivid genre scene “Before St. Basil’s Cathedral”. Quick BM, Vanderbilt University, 2007 MM, University of Cincinnati, 2009 July 2014 Committee Chair: Christopher Segall, Ph.D. i Abstract This document reveals connections between Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and his vocal literature in order to provide a new perspective on the expressive narrative of the piano cycle. Scholars often treat Pictures at an Exhibition as an isolated monument apart from Mussorgsky’s typical endeavors, and this insulated approach has resulted in somewhat dubious and poorly substantiated assertions about the cycle’s expressive content. In order to craft a more reliable and penetrating view of the cycle, this document incorporates evidence from Mussorgsky’s vocal works as well as Russian folk, chant, and choral music in order to clarify and challenge long-held beliefs about the work while providing new and alternative meanings for the musical text. There has yet to be a study which systematically examines the relationships between Pictures and the composer’s vocal literature. What vocal music provides, however, is an intrinsically direct correlation between music and text, binding the musical devices with more concretely descriptive meaning from the composer. This relationship serves as a basis for identifying the expressive roles associated with specific musical textures, which can then be connected back to the piano cycle.

    LEE, HYUN-JONG, D.M.A. The Evolution of Lyricism in Modest Musorgsky’s Compositional Style as Evidenced in Songs and Dances of Death. (2011) Directed by Dr. Carla LeFevre. 72pp. Musical characteristics added by Musorgsky in the second version of his Boris Godunov (1872) differed significantly from those of the original version of this opera (1869). These subsequent changes to the second version represent Musorgsky’s mature style. Discussion of previous research along with original analyses of songs composed by Musorgsky provide evidence that the musical progression towards lyricism that was first observed in the version of Boris Godunov was reflected later in his song composition. This dissertation compares songs composed in the 1860s, which contain the use of declamatory text setting technique to the more lyrical style in each song in the latter songs that were composed after the revision of Boris Godunov. The paper includes detailed analyses of the most notable song cycle that represents Musorgsky’s mature style, Pesni i plyaski smerti (Songs and Dances of Death, 1875-1877).
