A Review on Different Types of Carrot and Its Chemical Compositions

Email- [email protected] Received 28 May 2020; Accepted 16-June 2020 Abstract The carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus) is a root vegetable, usually orange in colour, though purple, black, red, white, and yellow cultivars exist. Carrot is a root vegetable with carotenoids, flavonoids, polyacetylenes, vitamins, and minerals, all of which possess numerous nutritional and health benefits. Besides lending truth to the old adage that carrots are good for eyes, carotenoids, polyphenols and vitamins present in carrot act as antioxidants, anticarcinogens, and immunoenhancers. Anti-diabetic, cholesterol and cardiovascular disease lowering, anti-hypertensive, hepatoprotective, renoprotective, and wound healing benefits of carrot have also been reported. The cardio- and hepatoprotective, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects of carrot seed extracts are also noteworthy. All are discussed in this review article. Carrot is one of the important root vegetables rich in bioactive compounds like carotenoids and dietary fibers with appreciable levels of several other functional components having significant health-promoting properties. The consumption of carrot and its products is increasing steadily due to its recognition as an important source of natural antioxidants having anticancer activity. Apart from carrot roots being traditionally used in salad and preparation of curries in India, these could commercially be converted into nutritionally rich processed products like juice, concentrate, dried powder, canned, preserve, candy, pickle, and gazrailla. -

DOI: 10.16943/ptinsa/2016/48573 Review Article Carrot Plant-A Potential Source of High Value Compounds and Biological Activities: A Review DALVIR KATARIA*, KHUSHMINDER KAUR CHAHAL, PAVNEET KAUR and RAMANDEER KAUR Department of Chemistry, Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana, India (Received on 23 November 2015; Revised on 04 March 2016; Accepted on 16 March 2016) Essential oil of carrot is produced and accumulated in the secretary ducts known as vittae. Phytochemical studies have shown that the major chemical components of carrot plant are polyphenols, flavonols, glycosides, alkaloids, saponins, sesquiterpenoids and essential oil. Chemical constituents of carrot seed essential oil obtainedby hydrodistillation have been the subject of frequent researches. The composition of essential oil varies with plant parts. The carrot essential oil possesses biological activities like antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, herbicidal, antioxidant, anticancer etc. The health benefits of carrot essential oil can be attributed to its antiseptic, disinfectant, detoxifying, antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, tonic, carminative, depurative, diuretic and stomachic properties.Major components present in different parts of carrot plant are listed along with their chemical composition. The morphological details of plant, its essential oil, chemicalconstituents and biological activities have been discussed in this review. It is a root vegetable that has world- wide distribution. Carrots were first used for medical purposes and gradually used as food. Written records in Europe indicated that carrots were cultivated prior to the tenth century. The colors of the carrot root flesh may be white, yellow, orange, red, purple, or very dark purple. -

CARROT VALUE CHAIN 1. DESCRIPTION OF THE INDUSTRY Carrot is a root vegetable usually orange, white or red, white blend in colour with a crisp texture when fresh. The edible part of carrot is the tap root. Carrots are considered one of the major vegetables consumed in South Africa. Several hundred varieties exist, but carrots are sold more by shape and type of variety. Carrots can be eaten raw, whole, chopped, grated or added to salads, for colour or texture. They are also, often chopped and boiled, fried or steamed and cooked in soups and stews, as well as fine baby foods and selected pet foods. The carrot industry contribution has increased steadily from 1999 to 2003. There was a slight decrease in gross value in 2004 due to decrease in prices received by the producers in the same year. From 2005,the gross value has increased steadily reaching the peak in 2008. High gross value in 2008 can be attributed to high production volumes which occurred while the prices were still in favorable position for producers. 1 1.1 Production areas Although carrots can endure summer heat in many areas, they grow best when planted in cooler climates. Fresh grower indicated that it is difficult to establish carrots in summer because heat, rain and early blights are major causes of crop failure and quality reduction. -

The herbal products which have been used in traditional medicine have become an attractive. The herbal products have important role throughout the world in treating and preventing a human disease. Common advantages of herbal medicines are effectiveness, safety, affordability and acceptability. Medicinal plants and their products have been used in the Indian traditional system of medicine and have shown experimental or clinical radioprotection activity. Medicinal plants are a rich source of natural antioxidant products. Modern medicine recognizes herbalism as a form of alternative medicine, as the practice of herbalism is not strictly based on evidence gathered using the scientific method. Modern medicine, does, however, make use of many plant-derived compounds as the basis for evidence-tested pharmaceutical drugs, phytotherapy, and phytochemistry works to apply modern standards of effectiveness testing to herbs and medicines that are derived from natural sources.
