Rivoluzioni, Utopie e Ingegneria Sociale (Projects for Humankind. Revolutions, Utopias and Social Engineering) explores a variety of plans and attempts to transform human beings into something different and better. In particular, it engages with utopian thinking and its ineludible counterpart, dystopia; with moments of politi- cal, cultural or philosophical revolution aimed at triggering profound shifts in human life; and with different projects of social engineering to be accomplished through a vari- ety of means such as education, propaganda or alterations to the human body or mind. The case studies included in this volume range from the 18th century to the present day, and involve disciplines such as literary and film studies, philosophy, political sci- ence and cultural history. In particular, the volume features essays on the following topics: mythology in German Romanticism; Martin Heidegger’s eschatology; Francesco Saverio Salfi’s essay on the 1783 earthquake in Calabria; the scapigliati writers Carlo Dossi and Giovanni Faldella; the utopian production of positivist anthropologist Paolo Mantegazza; the Proletkul’t movement; early Soviet children’s magazines; the politi- cal implications of Russian linguaculturology (lingvokul’turologija); Lafayette Ronald Hubbard’s Dianetics; Zulu intellectual and writer Herbert Dhlomo’s speculative fiction; “self-management” (autogestione) and the Italian Socialist Party in the 1970s; the cur- rent debate on surrogate motherhood; and Terry Gilliam’s dystopian film trilogy. Through these multiple perspectives, the volume argues that human projectuality is an anthropological constant throughout history that is both necessary for human existence and simultaneously fraught with dangers; and that it is therefore a crucial category to analyse reality and fiction alike.     Francesco Saverio Salfi : un rêve d’indépendance et de fédéralisme dans l’Italie pré-unitaire du XIXe siècle Evelina Leone, LLACS, Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 « Ses derniers vœux ont été pour la liberté de sa patrie1 » Francesco Saverio Salfi était un intellectuel au sens large du terme, ce que révèlent ses centres d’intérêt qui se déployaient sur différents domaines, à savoir la littérature, la critique littéraire, les sciences sociales, ainsi que les études politiques auxquelles il consacrait beaucoup de temps et d’énergie. Et c’est en particulier aux études critiques et politiques que notre réflexion s’attachera. De toute évidence, compte tenu de la longueur et de la complexité du sujet, notre article ne sera pas exhaustif. Néanmoins, il se propose de porter l’attention sur un aspect peu connu de l’auteur de Cosenza, à savoir son travail de théoricien politique. C’est ainsi que, dans un premier temps, nous présenterons rapidement la parabole intellectuelle de Francesco Saverio Salfi ; ensuite, nous essaierons de démontrer comment l’écrivain calabrais participe à la construction d’une identité et d’un imaginaire collectif dans lequel la Péninsule doit être libre et indépendante de toute domination étrangère ; nous nous focaliserons ensuite sur l’idée fédéraliste au fondement de la pensée politique de Salfi.     BYRON AND SWINBURNE: PROPAGANDISTS OF THE RISORGIMENTO The Manipulation of Historical Sources in Twin Dramatizations of Doge Faliero and Venetian Republicanism in 19th-Century Italy ! ! ! ! By MICHAEL AARON DAMYANOVICH ! ! ! ! A thesis presented to the Independent Studies Program of the University of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirements for the degree Bachelor of Independent Studies (BIS) ! ! ! ! ! Waterloo, Canada ! 2016 Abstract ! This essay will argue that Lord Byron manipulated historical sources on his fourteenth-century protagonist, Doge Faliero (died 1355), in order to write his historical drama, Marino Faliero: Doge of Venice (published 1821), as a piece of republican propaganda in support of Italy’s nation-building process (the Risorgimento), and that Algernon Swinburne’s rewrite of Byron’s drama, Marino Faliero (published 1885), perpetuated Byron’s manipulation of historical sources for the same purpose. This argument will proceed as follows: In writing his historical drama, Marino Faliero: Doge of Venice, Lord Byron covertly manipulated his supporting historical sources under the pretence of adhering to strict historicity. Byron did so in order to characterize Doge Faliero as a hero of Venetian Republicanism. In so doing, Byron dramatized the necessity of a people’s revolution in parallel visions of fourteenth- and early nineteenth-century Venice. Then, in rewriting Byron’s historical drama for late nineteenth-century Venice and post-unification Italy (after 1870), Algernon Swinburne developed Byron’s heroization of Faliero and updated the drama’s political representations. Swinburne did so in order to remodel Faliero after Giuseppe Mazzini (died 1872), the foremost Risorgimento leader of the effort to make the newly united Italy into a republic.

Abstract Between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the following one, the Napoleonic wars caused the whole of Northern Italy to live an unstable political era, the old absolutist regimes being replaced by republican states strongly subjected to France. In the case of Lombardy and its capital city Milan, for almost a century a part of the Habsburg Monarchy, this era was particularly intense and problematic: following the alternate outcome of the war, the government changed repeatedly from monarchy to republic over rather short time span. In a situation as such, rather unique in the history of the city, the various governments made a programmatic use of the arts and especially music for propaganda and control purposes. In Milan, a prominent venue for operatic performances already during the second half of the eighteenth century, musical theatre was identified as the primary vehicle for the dissemination of the rapidly changing political and social values and the monitoring of public opinion: La Scala opera house, at the very centre of Milan’s both musical and social life already in the Habsburg years, became the centre of diffusion of new cultural policies and social mechanisms.

    PROOF 12 Francesco Saverio Salfi and the Eulogy for Antonio Serra: Politics, Freemasonry, and the Consumption of Culture in the Early 19th Century Antonio Trampus 1 Francesco Saverio Salfi: his life between Naples and Milan Francesco Saverio Salfi published his eulogy on Antonio Serra in 1802 in Milan. 1 Although this might seem like the customary formal tribute, the text is actually full of far greater significance, of relevance to the political climate and the Italian and French Masonry of the beginning of the 19th century, as well as the Neapolitan culture of Antonio Genovesi and Gaetano Filangieri. The aim of the present work is to illustrate the social and Masonic context in which the eulogy on Serra was written and the role and character of Francesco Saverio Salfi. Who was Francesco Salfi? He was born in Cosenza – the same Sothern Italian city where Antonio Serra was born – on 1 January 1759 – and he died in Paris on 3 September 1832. His family lived in quite humble conditions, and he was placed under a widow’s charge before being started on the ecclesiastic career. During the seminary period, he came across texts by Hélvetius, d’Alembert, and Rousseau, and the doctrines of the Southern adherents of the Enlightenment. He was consecrated in 1781, but differences with the curia led him to move to Naples in 1785.
