“Art” Worth $150,000+ at the HOCA?

Black wrought iron fences – a somewhat common sight around Michiana. But have you ever taken a closer look at the fence in our cemetery along Logan Street? It is quite picturesque and unique. Out of curiosity, we con- tacted Joel Balok, commercial/industrial estimator at Cal -Pro Fence Company in South Bend to get the facts. The cost to replace the fence and magnificent brick “towers” on each side of the mammoth gate? According to Mr. Ba- lok, the cost would be a minimum of $150,000.00! But who made this fence possible? Irv Brown explained that a man by the name of Jules Stein donated a mini- mum of half the cost of the fence in the late 1930s. Wrought iron gate at entrance to the cemetery. And who is Jules Stein? Jules Stein was born April 26, 1896 in South Bend, Indiana, and died on April 29, 1981 and is buried in California. Jules was born to Louis Stein and Rosa Cohen Stein who are both buried in our ceme- tery (Louis passed away in 1942 and Rosa in 1935). Jules graduated from the University of Chicago at the age of 18 and later attended Rush Medical College. While attending college, Stein played the violin and saxo- phone to help finance his studies, and his success arrang- ing band dates led to his move from medicine to show business. He arranged one-night bookings, rather than having bands seek engagements for whole seasons which was then the norm. He signed Guy Lombardo and other top bands of the day. Detail of wrought iron fence surrounding the cemetery. Stein started package deals for complete shows for ho- tels and radio broadcasting. Spreading from the one-man start to bases in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and Cleveland, Stein's organization by the mid-1930s repre- sented more than half the nation's major bands, includ- ing those of Ted Weems, and Isham Jones. In 1924 he founded Music Corporation of America (MCA) and in 1937 – with only $1,000.00 -- he opened shop in Holly- wood. Yes, as the founder of the MCA we are all familiar with, he became the agent for such stars Bette Davis, Betty Grable, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Ingrid Berg- man, Frank Sinatra and Benny Goodman. By the mid-1940s it was estimated that half of the movie industry's stars were being represented by MCA. And who knew a man born in our town, in many ways, created the music industry as we know it today.
