18 Journal of Nutritional Therapeutics, 2017, 6, 18-37 Nutritional and Therapeutic Potential of Allium Vegetables Ravi Kant Upadhyay* Department of Zoology, D D U Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur 273009, U.P., India Abstract: Allium vegetables are highly nutritional, its dietary use improves digestion and mental health and lower down cholesterol level. Use of onions, garlic, scallions, chives and leeks show therapeutic efficacy against cardiovascular disease, hyperglycemia, and stomach cancer, Onions contain allylsulfides and flavonoids particularly quercetin that is an important anti-oxidative and reduces hepatocytes apoptosis in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat. Steroid saponins and sapogenins present in garlic bulbs are used to prepare soft soaps. β-chlorogenin is a characteristic steroid sapogenin from garlic that is used for skin ointment and as a shiner. Both garlic paste and soft garlic preparations are used for flavoring the food items. Garlic products that contain the most safe, effective, stable, and odorless components are the most valuable as dietary supplements. Garlic also contains non sulfur compounds such as steroid saponins. Alliums showed antimicrobial, antithrombotic, antitumor, anti-hyperlipidaemic, antiarthritic, anti-hyperglycemic anticarcinogenic potential. Allium vegetables contain organosulfur compounds, including DATS, diallyl disulfide (DADS), ajoene, and S- allylmercaptocysteine (SAMC), have been found to induce cell cycle arrest in cancer cells. Alliums have great ethnomedicinal importance as these are used as native remedies against wide spectrum of diseases including diabetes. Allium origin natural products are of great therapeutic and dietary use. These are most preferred items used by nutritionists, physicians, food technologists, food chemists. Green allium vegetables are good source of natural pharmaceutics which are good for health and act against nutritionally induced acute and chronic diseases. -

Livelihood Adaptation to Climate Change (LACC-II) Project (BGD/01/004/01/99) Technical Guideline on Establishment of Adaptation Option Demonstrations for Rabi season/October - March in Drought prone and saline areas Department of Agricultural Extension Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Introduction on the adaptation option identification, demonstration and evaluation process The identification, validation and approval of the adaptation practices have done by following a sequence of activities. In the first step, adaptation practices that had already been applied locally and/or had been previously introduced by national development, research and extension organizations were collected and documented by the project. The adaptation practices identified from the project area can be categorized as: a) agronomic management, b) water harvesting c) water resources exploitation, d) water use efficiency, e) crop intensification, f) alternative enterprise, g) alternative energy source etc. From this preliminary list, those adaptation options to be further promoted and/or replicated were selected through a sequence of evaluation processes at different levels starting from upazila-level DMC members, Upazila level Technical Implementation Groups (UTIWG) and National level Technical Implementation Working Groups (NTIWG). First consultative meetings and brief feed back workshops were also organized with the national research institutions (BARI, BRRI, BLRI and BFRI) and developmental organizations. Since its discovery as an uncharacterized transmembrane protein in human fibroblasts, TRPA1 has become one of the most intensively studied ion channels. Its function has been linked to regulation of heat and cold perception, mechanosensitivity, hearing, inflam- mation, pain, circadian rhythms, chemoreception, and other processes. Some of these proposed functions remain controversial, while others have gathered considerable experimental support. A truly polymodal ion channel, TRPA1 is activated by various stimuli, including electrophilic chemicals, oxygen, temperature, and mechanical force, yet the molecular mechanism of TRPA1 gating remains obscure. In this review, we discuss recent advances in the understanding of TRPA1 physiology, pharmacology, and molecular function. -

Determination of Bioactive Compounds in Leek (Allium Ampeloprasum Var
Arch Public Health 2010, 68 (Supplement 2), S57 Determination of bioactive compounds in leek (Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum) by Bernaert N1,2, Van Droogenbroek B1, Van Bockstaele E1,2, Stewart D3, De Loose M1,4 Leek (Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum) is in Flanders one of the most important crops cul- tivated outdoors. But, it is a product with a rather old fashioned and traditional image, as well on the mode of commercializing as on the mode of use. This research project aims to create innovation and market growth by analyzing specific bioactive compounds in leek like flavon- oids, organosulfur compounds and inulin. Before analyzing this specific compounds, we started with the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) assay for analyzing the anti- oxidant capacity in 34 leek varieties and 6 related species. The antioxidant capacity in the green part of leek was significant higher in most varieties in comparison with the white part. Related species like shallot also showed a significant higher ORAC value. In a later phase the influence of processing techniques on the content of these compounds will be analyzed, what can result in suggestions for improved processing methods with a maximal preservation of the desired compounds. Analyses of flavonoids and organosulfur compounds will be done using high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spec- trometry. The determination of inulin on the other hand will be accomplished with the help of high performance liquid chromatography with refractive index detector. The knowledge built up around bioactive compounds in leek will be communicated to research/practice centers, breeding stations and other interested parties. -

Abstract: Dogs and cats are the animals that owners most frequently seek assistance for potential poisonings, and these species are frequently involved with toxicoses due to ingestion of poisonous food. Feeding human foodstuff to pets may prove itself dangerous for their health, similarly to what is observed in Allium species toxicosis. Allium species toxicosis is reported worldwide in several animal species, and the toxic principles present in them causes the transformation of hemoglobin into methemoglobin, consequently resulting in hemolytic anemia with Heinz body formation. The aim of this review is to analyze the clinicopathologic aspects and therapeutic approach of this serious toxicosis of dogs and cats in order to give knowledge to veterinarians about Allium species toxicosis, and subsequently allow them to correctly diagnose this disease when facing it; and to educate pet owners to not feed their animals with Allium- containg food in order to better control this particular life-threatening toxicosis. The broad recognition of its positive effects on the longevity of Mediterranean populations also led to the adoption of this diet in other regions of the world, and scientific interest focused on revealing its health effects. MD is not only linked with eating specific nutritional food products but also with social, religious, environmental, and cultural aspects, thus representing a healthy lifestyle in general. However, modern lifestyles adhere to less healthy diets, alienating people from their heritage. Therefore, considering the increasing evidence of the beneficial health effects of adherence to the MD and the ongoing transitions in consumers’ behavior, the present review focuses on updating the scientific knowledge regarding this diet and its relevance to agrobiodiversity.
