V Preface I originally was drawn to write this book because of my years of involvement in alternative health. In the 1980s I founded and later sold Pegasus Products, Inc. a firm that produces and distributes flower essences, gem elixirs, and homeopathic remedies. I was also a health practitioner for some years and have written four books on alternative health. FDA abuses have become the norm, and gradually I came to understand how dangerous the federal government has become to our freedoms. My purpose in writing this book is to awaken more people to the fact that these are very dangerous times for America. More and more of the rights we take for granted are being lost. Too many politicians have sold out to the special interests, and most people are too busy watching TV to notice or take responsibility for what is happening. In the name of stopping illegal drugs and crime our rights are gradually being forfeited, as the federal government tightens control over the people. I have also written this book so that people can more easily look at the whole picture. I have focused my research on extracting information from hundreds of books, newspapers, and magazines so that people can more easily understand what is taking place in America. Some might say that several stories of government abuse that are heard in one part of the country don't appear too threatening. Yet when you look at many different incidents all across the country and grasp the full picture it is clear that something is very wrong. 1 Chapter I Introduction “In our country the lie has become not just a moral category, but a pillar of the state.” Alexander Solzhenitsyn “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God—I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death?” Patrick Henry America today exists in a twilight zone, not a democracy or a Republic but not yet a police state. America has become an elitist corporate oligarchy. We as a people clearly do not have the freedoms that the Founding Fathers had and that they envisioned for future generations. The many cases of government abuse described in this book are no longer rare or unique, they are increasingly the norm. Especially since the late 1960s, numerous American political activists have been murdered, maimed, framed, kidnapped, bombed, and spied on by government agents. Roosevelt, which I read about in My Weekly Reader in second grade. At the time of Pearl Harbor, I was fif- teen and a sophomore in high school. My memories of the years between these two events are like islands in a dark and turbulent river—the history of which I knew nothing. In this little book, I revisit those islands while plumbing one of many currents in that dark stream: Americans’ diverse responses to Nazi Germany in the prewar years. It is also a journey into my own history—in a sense, a “researched reminiscence” perhaps worth sharing with younger generations. The 1930s were years when Americans struggled to define their country’s role in a dangerous world. Opinions were deeply divided and passionately held. Before the debate could be resolved, America was attacked.   • Don't Panic: Making Progress on the 'Going Dark' Debate
    Foreword Just over a year ago, with support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University convened a diverse group of security and policy experts from academia, civil society, and the U.S. intelligence community to begin to work through some of the particularly vexing and enduring problems of surveillance and cybersecurity. The group came together understanding that there has been no shortage of debate. Our goals were to foster a straightforward, non-talking-point exchange among people who do not normally have a chance to engage with each other, and then to contribute in meaningful and concrete ways to the discourse on these issues. A public debate unfolded alongside our meetings: the claims and questions around the government finding a landscape that is “going dark” due to new forms of encryption introduced into mainstream consumer products and services by the companies who offer them. We have sought to distill our conversations and some conclusions in this report. The participants in our group who have signed on to the report, as listed on the following page, endorse “the general viewpoints and judgments reached by the group, though not necessarily every finding and recommendation.” In addition to endorsing the report, some signatories elected to individually write brief statements, which appear in Appendix A. Our participants who are currently employed full-time by government agencies are precluded from signing on because of their employment, and nothing can or should be inferred about their views from the contents of the report. The Influence of American Discourse on the Mission to Armenia (Under the direction of Professor Sarah Shields) In August 1919, President Wilson commissioned the American Military Mission to Armenia to investigate the post-World War I situation in Anatolia and report recommendations to Congress on potential American responsibilities in the region. The President expected the final report, composed by Major General James Harbord, to present impartial observations consistent with the dispassionate language characteristic of military prose. This would have allowed Congress to base its decisions on military judgements rather than on existing partisan reports which favored diplomatic or humanitarian agendas. Though Harbord’s report predominately exhibited the institutional style he adopted as an officer and reflected a hardened worldview shaped over his thirty-year career, his lifetime exposure to American media narratives on Armenians was indelibly present as well. Examining Harbord’s sources reveals that he had absorbed competing public and military narratives that needed reconciliation in his report. I analyzed 23,399 articles from American newspapers, alongside pamphlets published by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and diplomatic reports produced by the Inquiry, to trace discursive trends on Armenians as they evolved in the United States.

Once again the strident Babbitry of 'free enterprise versus the state' rings in the corridors of power, in editorial offices, in the halls of academe.
