Jerusalema Dance Challenge Jerusalema Dance Challenge These days, we hear a lot about viruses and how to avoid catching them. Interestingly, there are some similarities in the way we talk about music and viruses. We can talk about “catching” a virus and we can describe a song as “catchy”. A catchy tune, like a virus, moves easily from one person to another. We also describe internet trends as being “viral”, even if they are good. Nothing exemplifies this more than the global phenomenon of the 2020 dance song Jerusalema. Questions Find two words that both mean “contagious”. Viral or catchy Can we describe a good thing as “viral”, or only a bad thing? It can be used for a good thing, such as musical or cultural trends. This distinguishes the word “viral” as it appears in a medical context, where it is only negative. The song was first released in November 2019 by South African DJ and producer Master KG (Kgaogelo Moagi), featuring South African vocalist Nomcebo. The tune manages to be both upbeat and mellow at the same time, so you can enjoy it no matter what mood you are in. Its lyrics represent a crossover between two usually disparate genres: house music and gospel music. The words implore God to guard the singer and walk with him. His kingdom, we hear, is not this world. The song made a good impression when it was released, but it really exploded onto the world stage a few months later, in June 2020, when the song was remixed with Nigerian artist Burna Boy. At this point, Jerusalema went viral. Questions What is a genre? A genre is a form or type of text or production. If the student does not know the meaning of the word, he/she should glean it from the immediate context. Find a synonym for “separate” or “disconnected” in the passage. Disparate “Its lyrics represent a crossover between two usually disparate genres: house music and gospel music.” Find a synonym for “beg” or “request”. Implore “The words implore God to guard the singer and walk with him.” When was the song Jerusalema initially released? November 2019. Later on, the text, we see “June 2020”, but this latter date is the date of the remix. What does it mean to say that the song “exploded onto the world stage”? Allow the student to paraphrase this idiomatic language. Possible answers: • suddenly became famous around the world • made a big impact • became a huge phenomenon in a short space of time But its fame does not come from the song alone. It has also caught on as a dance craze, after a dance challenge under the hashtag #JerusalemaDanceChallenge was started by a group of young Angolans in February 2020. The now famous choreography has inspired copy cats around the world. YouTube is full of groups of people staging the dance from every continent and every walk of life, from Italian nuns to wedding guests in Zimbabwe. The hopeful lyrics and upbeat tune have brought people together from all over the world, in a time in which we all need something to smile about. The song has also had an impact on African politics, helping to heal a diplomatic rift between South Africa and Nigeria. Jerusalema is a pan-African cultural export that has brought some peace and light to the whole world. Questions Why do you think the song has become so popular? Allow the student to paraphrase the text, or come up with his/her own thoughts. In the text, the following suggestion is made: “The hopeful lyrics and upbeat tune have brought people together from all over the world, in a time in which we all need something to smile about.” How do we know that there was a problem between South Africa and Nigeria in the past? The phrase “diplomatic rift” tells us that there was a problem. Are things better now? Yes, because the text tells us that the project has helped to "heal a diplomatic rift between South Africa and Nigeria”. What is the meaning of the prefix “pan” as in “pan-African”? The prefix connotes unity between many parts of a whole. “Pan-African” means “all of Africa”. At the center of it all is proudly South African Master KG. His talent has propelled him to worldwide fame. He even enjoys the enviable privilege of being the writer of the world’s most “shazamed” song. Shazam is an application that identifies the names of songs. If you hear a song you like, but you don’t know the name, you can put it into Shazam and the application will tell you everything you need to know. Just like “Google”, this application has become a verb in the English language because of its popularity. Through his astronomical success, Master KG and his Jerusalema Project have provided a great morale boost to South Africans. Already known for its wonderful weather and natural beauty, South Africa is now known for having given a rather gloomy world a reason to sing and dance. Questions If something is enviable, are we saying that it is positive or negative? We are saying it is positive. Give two internet terms that have become English verbs. Google Shazam Find a synonym for “huge” or “impressive” in the context of describing someone’s accomplishments. Astronomical .

  • Africa's Soft Power : Philosophies, Political Values, Foreign Policies and Cultural Exports / Oluwaseun Tella
“This seven-chapter book is a powerful testimonial to consummate African scholarship. Its analysis is rigorous, insightful, lucid and authoritative, providing fresh perspectives on selected uniquely African philosophies, and the potential ities, deployment and limitations of soft power in Africa’s international relations. The author rigorously Africanises the concept, broadening its analytic scope from its biased Western methodology, thus brilliantly fulfilling that great African pro verb made famous by the inimitable Chinua Achebe: ‘that until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter’. This is truly an intellectual tour de force.” W. Alade Fawole, Professor of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. “This book addresses an important tool in the arsenal of foreign policy from an African perspective. African states have significant soft power capacities, although soft power is not always appreciated as a lever of influence, or fully integrated into countries’ foreign policy strategies. Tella takes Nye’s original concept and Africanises it, discussing Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa via their respective philosophies of Pharaonism, Harambee, Omolúwàbí and Ubuntu. This study is a critical contribution to the literature on African foreign policies and how to use soft power to greater effect in building African agency on the global stage.” Elizabeth Sidiropoulos, Chief Executive, South African Institute of International Affairs, Johannesburg, South Africa. “Soft power is seldom associated with African states, given decades bedevilled by coup d’états, brazen dictatorships and misrule. This ground-breaking book is certainly a tour de force in conceptualising soft power in the African context.

  • The African Roots of Cuban Music,The Music of the Nyayo Era,Kenyans' Elusive Search for a Cultural Identity,How Afrobeat(S)
The African Roots of Cuban Music By Boima Tucker British sociologist Paul Gilroy suggested the history of culture in the Atlantic world is characterized by constant exchange. One of the most traceable elements of that exchange, is the musical connections between communities of African descent on either side of the ocean. These musical practices operate as sites of resistance, cultural retention, and social cohesion that allow us to understand some of the ways we all are formed by trans-continental processes. During the dawn of recorded music in the early part of the 20th century, Cuba—one of many New World sites of African and indigenous resistance to European colonisation and enslavement—would become a hotbed for musical export in the emerging industrialized system of music distribution. Folk musical traditions from across the island would come together in Havana’s studios, and then get dispersed around the entire Atlantic world. In the early part of the 20th Century, Cuban musical styles like son, mambo and guaguanco followed migrants and sailors out across the Atlantic, hitting radio waves in the ports of landing, and spreading throughout the interior of the countries they landed in. With its strong traces of West and Central African rhythms, this music would find legions of devoted followers on the African continent. Local artists would try their hand at recreating the sound, and start to mix elements of their own local traditions creating what we now know as Congolese rumba, soukous, mbalax, semba, kizomba, and highlife, etc. These styles, amongst many others on the continent, would go on to form the backbone of national identity in the post-independence period, their propagation supported with enthusiasm by the leaders of the new nations.

It was with grave concern to note that South Africans were also affected by these attacks. In this regard, South Africa, through its Mission in Maputo, is working with the local authorities on verifications, as well as providing the necessary consular services. The Mission in Mozambique was re- enforced with additional staff in order to handle the work at hand of locating, identifying and responding to the respective needs of the affected. By 29 March, the South African High Commission managed to account for a total of 43 South Africans affected by the attacks. The citizens were in the area known as Afungi. These included the two men who fled into the bush during the attacks on the Amarula Hotel convoy on 26 March, and a young South African who hid away and was found by search-and-rescue helicopters. Some of these nationals were already back home while others were moved to safe areas within Mozambique. The services provided by the High Commission include assisting South African citizens with emergency medical evacuation, obtaining emergency travel documentation and securing international flight transfers. On 30 March 2021, in a statement, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation thanked the Government of the Republic of Mozambique for the assistance provided to South African citizens affected by the terrorist attacks in that country.
